it was the main issue with the show going forward, you nailed it though. he was the antagonist turned protagonist. Light ends up the big bad with no "great good guy" to go up against and they end up essentially having to nerf Light with shakey plot devices to make him beatable.

I still quite like how it ended even if it felt abrupt but yeah, woulda been better if they somehow revealed it was all a convulted plot that L laid out after death I just rewatched too so this is all fresh on my mind and I will say that part 2 was better to me this time, probably knowing the change was coming helped too

I should give it a rewatch as well. I didn't hate it either and he got what he deserved and there was some pretty good stuff for sure. I guess it's more like you said, abrupt both in ending and in tone of the show as it's not longer this big 1 v 1 4d chess game which I think a lot of ppl really liked about the first half. Also that L was just a pretty great Sherlock archtype

Yeah its like it moved from a Chess game to more like a game of Risk on part 2 lol I had that realization during the watch. Still mostly Light vs Near but the other players were more involved than prior and not just pawns essentially

Also I loved how Light would do something and I'd be like "damn that was smart" and then one scene later L would be suspicious over that very thing for a reason that made perfectly logical sense that I didn't think about lmao dude woulda caught me so fast
