I saw this movie yesterday and it was… enjoyable but a weird way to tell an Elvis story. First off, Austin butler is just unbelievable as Elvis. Yeah he doesn’t really look like him but he gets the voice and the movements perfect. He nails all the emotions. Tom Hanks is also really good as the slimy Col Tom Parker. The movie has some amazing scenes and tells a good amount of history. However it never really feels like a period piece. The movie could’ve taken place in the present day and I would never know. They use current music during some of the scenes which is bizarre and doesn’t really fit at all. The movie moves REALLY fast even at 2 and a half hours as they try to cover as much as possible. Even though you learn a lot it does feel exhausting at times. However trying to tell 42 years in 2 hours and 30 minutes isn’t exactly easy so I can forgive that. The movie is also VERY flashy as is to be expected with Baz Lurhman. It just somehow feels off with the type of story it’s telling. Where the movie succeeds is the musical scenes as Austin Butler tears it up as Elvis and you really feel like you’re watching the King perform. The movie also hits a lot of the emotional beats well. At the end of the day this is not a perfect film and can feel weird at times but when it works it really works and Austin Butler alone makes it worth the price of admission.

I would have never believed I'd see some praise for Butler, he was horrendous in The Shannara Chronicles.

Might just have been the series itself though :francis

I did, both seasons. For... the plot, obviously.
