Barao's Trainer Confirms Champ Is Going To Wait For Cruz

UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao has been on the sidelines since his July 21st win over Urijah Faber to claim the belt. Dominick Cruz, the holder of the regular belt, is expected to be on the shelf for a while longer while he rehabs his torn ACL, and it was expected that Barao would probably defend his interim title at least once while Cruz was still out. But in an interview with UOL, Barao's coach Andre Pederneiras dismissed that notion and says Barao will wait for Cruz to return for a title unification match:

"He just won the title, just fought. We will wait. Look how long the wait was for Condit and GSP to unify the belt?"

Honestly not surprised to read this, Cruz is probably pissed about it knowing he's going to have no choice but to fight Barao now. I'm pretty confident in saying that Barao is going to fuck Cruz up whenever they do fight.

This is the dumbest shit I've ever heard, they make a new belt because the lineal champ is injured, so the interim champ then refuses to fight.

It's just tying up another division needlessly.

I hate it when these guys do this. Its like you are fighting for the Interim Championship. Meaning while the actual champ is out... you are the stand in champion. So instead of being a fighting champion you instead are like... you know what I'll just sit on my ass and wait for months and months while the real champ gets better. Its just messed up. Whats the point of having these Interim champions if they just going to sit out for about a year and not fight?

Dana and co. really need to crack down on these guys. People lose title shots like crazy in the LHW division but everywhere else guys can win Interim Championships and then sit out for a year. Should have stripped Condit of his belt and strip Barao of his too if all they want to be is number one contenders instead of Champions.

There is actually a pretty deep class in the BW division. No one can see it though bc there all fighting on Prelim and FXs card so no one can really see them.

The same guys that Cruz would have fought if he wasn't injured, Barao is supposedly a 'Champion' after all.

I don't know why they bother with interim championships. Either strip the injured champion of the belt or have the guys fight with no belt on the line. It is pointless having two titles around especially when the interim champions don't even bother trying to defend their titles.

IDK man, Michael McDonald seems like the only standout contender after destroying Miguel Torres.

Pickett is dece too, but he already got subbed in the first by Barao last year.

After those two you've got guys like Brian Bowles and Scott Jorgensen who lose to gatekeepers like Faber.
