Anthony Pettis' title fight against Josh Thomson called off at UFC on FOX 9

Anthony Pettis' first title defense has been put on hold.

The UFC lightweight champion won't square off against Josh Thomson at UFC on FOX 9 on Dec. 14 because he has suffered a knee injury, according to a report on FOX Sports Live on Sunday night.

UFC on FOX 9 will now be headlined by the rematch between UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez, according to FoxSports.com.

The Johnson vs. Benavidez 2 fight was supposed to be the main event for the TUF 18 Finale on Nov. 30.

It is unknown what's next for Thomson or how long Pettis will be out at this time.

Hasn't a knee injury plagued him in the past too? Think they should take a stance on injured champions now and not end up in a ridiculous situation like what happened with Cruz.

yeah a knee injury prevented him from facing off against Aldo but then he wound up facing off against Henderson.

But I think the stance should only be taken if the injury keeps the champ out for a long period of time... like say a year. cause sometimes the injury just causes one fight to be missed and give it a couple more months and they are good to go. But with Cruz... the fact that he is still "Champion" is ridiculous.

I would say back to back fights myself, but then again I guess it depends who it is because some want to fight 3 times a year. I dunno, I just think it sucks having champions hold up the division but on the flipside if they know they'd get stripped of the title then they may attempt to fight hurt which isn't exactly a better solution.
