Jesse Ventura 94.jpg

The commentary team of Tony Schiavone, Eric Bischoff, and Jesse Ventura welcome us to yet another exciting edition of AWA Championship Wrestling. They hype up Match 5 of the Best-of-7 Series, where Rick Rude may have a chance to win the series if he beats Steamboat tonight. The team also hypes up an AWA Light Heavyweight Championship bout between Tiger Sayama and Steve Regal. They also mention the AWA US Tag Team Tournament starting tonight with Los Guerreros vs. Harlem Heat. They then bring up that unfortunately, because Scott Norton failed to appear at tonight's show, an emergency team had to be put together for what was originally going to be Fire & Ice vs. The Samoan SWAT Team.

Paul Orndorff 91.jpg

Ken Resnick interviews Paul Orndorff and Col. Rob Parker. Orndorff says he heard President Bill Watts loud and clear last week, and says that its proof that Watts has a bias against Orndorff. Paul says that that's just fine, because he'll make his case at WrestleRock why he should be the #1 Contender for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship.

In a bad match, Los Guerreros secured the victory in the first match of the US Tag Team Championship tournament over Harlem Heat in 7:19. Tony Schiavone notes it's a good victory for the brotherly pair. Jesse expresses his doubts about them getting far in the tournament, but that anything is possible.

We go backstage to see Nick Bockwinkel interviewing Jim Cornette, The Midnight Express, and Bam Bam Bigelow. Jim Cornette talks about last week's attack on him by Terry Gordy, "You know, Gordy, you think you're real smart attacking me from behind? Well you're not gonna feel so smart when Bam Bam Bigelow gets his hands on you at WrestleRock in the Minneapolis Alley Fight! He's going to tear you limb from limb and make you regret the day you were ever born! Speaking of, I'm sure the doctor slapped your mother instead of you when you were born. Now, on to the topic of D.J. Peterson and The Trooper. I told you once, I'll say it again, you're welcome to try and trot out that midget-brained fool Peterson again, Trooper; all's bad that ends bad, and brother, it's going to end *real* bad for you two at WrestleRock."

After the match we get a promo from Wendi Richter. Dale Gagne asks her about the upcoming AWA Women's Championship match against Candi Devine at WrestleRock. Nick Bockwinkel Interviews Larry Zbyszko, who is beyond distraught and is clutching his AWA World Heavyweight Championship tightly. Zybyszko shouts that Bill Watts has been trying to screw Larry Z for months now and this is the last straw. If his lawyer can't help him out, Larry is going to have to take matters into his own hand. Zbyszko declares, "I've held onto this championship for over a year now, and by god, I'll hold onto it for another year or two. Nobody can beat me, and that includes that hick King of Memphis, Jerry Lawler."

Larry Nelson talks to Rick Rude, who currently has a 3-1 advantage over Ricky Steamboat in the Best-of-7 Series. Rude tells everyone that tonight is the night he proves once and for all he is the better wrestler between them. It's been a fun ride, but it's time for Rick Rude to become the #1 wrestler on this entire roster.

Another amazing match between the two sees once again the commentary team bar Eric Bischoff taking sides. Tony Schiavone believes that Steamboat can come back from being down a 3-1 deficit, while Ventura thinks it's all over for Steamboat. The finish of the match sees a similar situation to last week... however, this time, it's Rude who runs into the ref! STEAMBOAT IS FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE! HE HAS BRASS KNUCKLES OF HIS OWN! Rude turns around AND EATS A FISTFUL OF BRASS! Turnabout is fairplay as even Jesse Ventura has to admit. The ref stirs to see Steamboat pinning an bloody and out cold Rude! 1... 2... 3...! It's now 3-2 in favor of Rude!!

Steve Austin Re-Signing With AWA
- By Dave Meltzer

The American Wrestling Association and Steve Austin have reportedly agreed to a four year contract that will make Austin exclusive to the company. The dollar amount is rumored to be for $2.3k a month, though that amount could change as Austin rises through the roster. Several members of AWA's writing team, Jim Cornette and Bill Watts (as well as creative consultant Ernie Ladd) are supposedly high on Austin's talents and could see him as a major proponent. Although there is some pushback from other members (rumored to be creative consultant Eric Bischoff and booker Eddie Graham).

Schiavone is joined by Eric Bischoff and Jesse Ventura to commentate one of the biggest shows of the year for the AWA. Eric Bischoff sells the show as action-packed and full of glory. The crew hypes up the AWA International Television Championship, Midnight Express vs. Peterson & Trooper, the AWA World Heavyweight Championship Steel Cage match between Jerry Lawler and Larry Zbyszko, and of course the 30-Minute Iron Man Match between Ricky Steamboat and Rick Rude. Jesse Ventura breaks the news that Terry Gordy had night appeared for tonight's show and so the Battle of the Bam Bams is cancelled. Instead, Bam Bam Bigelow will face off against Bob Backlund.

We go backstage and see Nick Bockwinkel with Jim Cornette and his stable "Camp Cornette". Bam Bam Bigelow looks pissed off and Jim Cornette is most displeased. Cornette screams that Bam Bam Bigelow has been screwed out of facing off against Terry Gordy, "He's not here, Nick! We show up today and President Bill Watts tells us that Terry Gordy had flown the coop, hitched a ride out of town, ran with his tail between his legs! So where does that leave me and Bam Bam!? We're deserving of a match more than anyone else, and Bam Bam is going to get his match. We talked with Mr. Watts, and he has graciously given Bigelow an alternate opponent. Bob Backlund, you're toast. You're facing off against a very mad Bam Bam, and when he's hot, there is no stopping this mountain of a man. Now as for DJ Peterson and The Trooper? Tonight's the night where you will learn once and for all that The Midnight Express are the greatest tag team of all time. We have a major surprise for you tonight so you better keep your eyes wide open! Those AWA World Tag Team Championship belts aren't going anywhere anytime soon! You can bet on that!"

Bam Bam Bigelow w/ Jim Cornette vs. Bob Backlund

In a decent match, Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Bob Backlund via pinfall after hitting the diving headbutt. During the match, Bam Bam's frustration over not being able to fight Terry Gordy hindered his performance and thus Bob Backlund nearly won with a crossface chicken-wing; Bigelow countered by ramming Backlund into an exposed turnbuckle, allowing him to hit the diving headbutt. Jesse Ventura calls this Bigelow's biggest win in AWA history thus far.

The Trooper vs. The Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette

In a decent match that had the crowd gripped, The Trooper wrestled by himself after the Midnight Express injured his partner D.J. Peterson. He was double teamed throughout the match, but mounted one big comeback at the end and nearly won... if not for Jim Cornette distracting the ref and handing the tennis racket to Stan Lane. TROOPER JUST GOT WHACKED IN THE HEAD WITH THE RACKET! DOWN GOES TROOPER! BOBBY EATON IS PINNING HIM... 1... 2... 3... The Midnight Express just robbed The Trooper of what would have been a fantastic solo effort!

Tully Blanchard w/ Woman vs. Nikita Koloff

Our next match-up is a major grudge match and the Minneapolis Alley Fight between Tully Blanchard and Nikita Koloff. Both men are in their street clothes for this one, and it starts off hot. The competitors actually manage to get good heat from the crowd and both beat the living hell out of each other throughout the building. Nikita Koloff is busted open first after Blanchard rams him into an exposed turnbuckle. For the first half of the match, Blanchard is in control, but Koloff bounces back and finally busts open Blanchard with a chair shot to the skull. With both men bloodied and battered, it's a matter of who breaks first... Tony Schiavone and Jesse Ventura are in awe of the intestinal fortitude displayed by both men. The finish finally sees Nikita Koloff smash Blanchard with a devastating Russian Sickle; as he goes for a pin, Woman climbs the ring and attacks Koloff with her loaded purse! KOLOFF AND BLANCHARD ARE OUT! Woman pulls Blanchard on top of Kolof... 1... 2... KICK OUT! KOLOFF SOMEHOW KICKED OUT! The commentary team can't believe it! Woman can't either! Both Blanchard and Koloff are slowly climbing to their feet, and Woman goes to hit Koloff again... KOLOFF DUCKED! BLANCHARD GOT KNOCKED OUT! BLANCHARD IS DOWN! Koloff just grabbed Women! He's tossing her out of the ring, and Jesse Ventura is hot on commentary, "You don't go throwing around women, you Russian kook!" Blanchard is crawling to his feet... RUSSIAN SICKLE! Koloff goes for the pin! 1... 2... 3!!! Koloff wins! Koloff wins the Minneapolis Alley Fight!

Woman is down and she is out! Koloff picks her up and tosses her at the barely conscious Blanchard, the two go down in a heap! Nikita Koloff goes back to celebrating while Jesse Ventura and Tony Schiavone argue on commentary over whether it was necessary to slap Woman.

We finally arrive to the main event between Jerry Lawler and Larry Zbyszko, inside the confines of a STEEL CAGE. Jerry Lawler trots to the ring with a focused look. Larry Zbyszko enters into the cage with a very reluctant and nervous look, as if he's not ready for this. The match begins and Lawler stalks Zbyszko, who is looking for any way out. He quickly goes to try and escape by climbing up the cage, BUT LAWLER SLAMS HIM DOWN! The beating begins! Lawler dominates the early going, tossing Zbyszko pillar to post to cage, busting him open!
