Suwama vacates AJPW Triple Crown title after positive COVID-19 test

Suwama has vacated the AJPW Triple Crown title after testing positive for COVID-19.

All Japan Pro Wrestling announced this morning that Suwama has tested positive and as a result, will vacate the title. He was scheduled to defend the championship against Jake Lee on June 26 at the Ota Ward Gymnasium in Tokyo. No further details regarding the Triple Crown title were announced.

Tokyo Sports further reported that Suwama had felt sick around the 18th, then tested positive the following day. The original COVID-19 test Suwama took was negative, but a follow-up PCR test later confirmed the positive result.

Suwama held the Triple Crown title for 454 days, defeating Kenyo Miyahara on March 23, 2020. He was on his seventh reign as champion, a record for the title. The title defense against Lee would have been his eighth title defense.

Another AJPW wrestler, Zeus, was pulled from last year’s Real World Tag League in November after testing positive for COVID. He returned to in-ring action the following month.

You give your body night and day to become Champion one time and then Covid 19 stops that dream from continuing poor guy. He'll be back wanting to get back his Crown no doubt.

All Japan Pro Wrestling has revealed how their next Triple Crown Champion will be decided.

At AJPW's Champions Night show at Ota Ward Gymnasium in Tokyo this Saturday (June 26), Jake Lee, Kento Miyahara, and Yuma Aoyagi will take part in a three-person battle where they'll face off in singles matches that will take place one after another. The first wrestler to win two matches in a row will become the new Triple Crown Champion.

A lottery will be held before the show to determine the order of the matches.

Lee, who won this year's Champion Carnival tournament, was originally set to challenge Suwama for the Triple Crown title at Champions Night. But Suwama had to vacate the title after testing positive for COVID-19. Suwama had held the Triple Crown Championship since winning the title from Miyahara in March 2020.

Miyahara & Aoyagi were scheduled to defend their AJPW World Tag Team titles against Koji Doi & Kuma Arashi at Champions Night, but that match has been postponed due to Miyahara and Aoyagi both being in the Triple Crown Championship match. Doi & Arashi will now face Ryuki Honda & Shotaro Ashino in a tag match at the show.

Lee and Aoyagi have both never held the Triple Crown Championship previously. Miyahara is a four-time former champion.

In the main event, Shotaro Ashino defeated Jake Lee by submission and once again challenged him for the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship. Ashino also promised that SUWAMA would be his first challenger for the title if he was victorious against Lee.

Ashino was previously scheduled to face Shuji Ishikawa in a match to determine Lee’s first challenger for the title at All Japan’s show on July 11 in EDION Arena Osaka #2, with the winner challenging Lee on July 22 in Korakuen Hall, but the bout was cancelled after Ishikawa tested positive for COVID-19.

All Japan Pro Wrestling held its Summer Action Series card at Korakuen Hall on Thursday featuring a title change.

Francesco Akira was making his first defense of the AJPW junior heavyweight championship and was unsuccessful, losing the title to Sugi.

The loss ended Akira’s brief reign after 26 days when he won the title on June 26th from Koji Iwamoto.

It was Sugi’s first championship in All Japan after becoming a freelancer earlier this year and ending his exclusive relationship with Zero1. He has been wrestling since 2003 and held championships in Michinoku Pro and Zero1.

Thursday’s show was headlined by Triple Crown holder Jake Lee defeating Shotaro Ashino. It was Lee’s first defense of the championship after winning the vacant title in a series of matches involving Kento Miyahara and Yuma Aoyagi on June 26th.

The card drew 709 fans to Korakuen Hall and below are the results (Credit: Purolove.com):
*Triple Crown: Jake Lee (champion) over Shotaro Ashino
*AJPW Junior Heavyweight Championship: Sugi over Francesco Akira (champion)
*Atsushi Aoki Memorial Match: Suwama, Hikaru Sato & King Tani over Yuma Aoyagi, Takuya Wada & SUSHI
*Kento Miyahara over Koji Iwamoto
*All Asia Tag Team Championship: Zeus & Izanagi (champions) over El Lindaman & Issei Onitsuka
*AJPW TV Six-Man Championship: Yoshitatsu, Seigo Tachibana & Carbell Ito over Tajiri, Hokuto Omori & Yusuke Kodama (champions)
*Ryuki Honda & Dan Tamura over Atsuki Aoyagi & Rising HAYATO
*Takao Omori, Osamu Nishimura & Ryuji Hijikata over Jun Saito, Rei Saito & Ryoma Tsukamoto

All Japan Pro Wrestling ~Royal Road Tournament 2021~ Preview

Jessie https://twitter.com/SisterJessiee

On the 15th of August Royal Road Tournament returns. This will be the biggest Royal Road since the tournament started with 32 men in the running to win. A mixture of heavyweights, junior heavyweights and even rookies make up the brackets.

Unlike most All Japan tournaments Royal Road is single elimination. So once a wrestler has lost, they are out of the competition.

The first round will be held on one day but spilt into two shows. An afternoon show and a night show.

Royal Road Round 1

12:30

Black Menso-Re vs Ayato Yoshida
Takao Omori vs Atsuki Aoyagi
Kento Miyahara vs Yusuke Kodama
Jake lee vs SUGI
Shuji Ishikawa vs Jun Saito
Shigehiro Irie vs Kuma Arashi
Zeus vs Seigo Tachibana
Rising HAYATO vs T-Hawk

17:00

TAJIRI vs Devil Murasaki
Yoshi Tatsu vs Hikaru Sato
Dan Tamura vs Abdulla Kobayashi

Notes

Ayato Yoshida returns to All Japan for the first time since January. He was a member of the faction JIN until Jake betrayed Koji and ended the faction.

With SUGI’s win on the last day of summer action series his match against Jake Lee will now be an all champion match up. Heavyweight champion vs junior heavyweight champion.

Shuji Ishikawa and Black Menso-Re make their returns to the ring after testing positive for covid last month and missing the entire summer action tour.

The identity of Purple Haze member Devil Murasaki is still a mystery.

Abdulla Kobayashi returns for the first time after challenging Nextream for the world tag team titles earlier in the year in February.

The last person to win Royal Road was Jake Lee. He went on to face Kento Miyahara for the Triple Crown.
