An AEW Women’s title eliminator tournament has been announced.
Revealed tonight on AEW Dynamite, the tournament will feature sixteen women in a single elimination tournament. The winner of the tournament will become the number one contender for the championship, facing champion Hikaru Shida. No start date for the tournament was set, other than it was “coming soon”.
The graphic for the tournament also featured the flags of both the United States and Japan, though the significance of that was not explained.
Shida has held the championship for 243 days, defeating Nyla Rose at Double or Nothing back on May 23 of last year. She has defended the title in the past against the likes of Penelope Ford, Nyla Rose, Anna Jay, and Big Swole.
She most recently defended the title against Abadon on the first night of New Year’s Smash on January 6. She successfully defended the title despite Abadon biting Shida in the neck.
