Honestly I think MJF is more the problem than anyone in it. Some isn't his fault bc he was off filming I'll give him though.
But when he turned heel again he mostly just went right back to the same character as before, outside of like one of two promos explaining the turn, he didn't really add a layer of Cole betraying him to make him a more jaded guy, he's just back to being rich asshole.
And that's left Cole with very little to work with as far as a villain for the reasons Roy said. On paper I would have thought returning Cole as a face was the right move and doing the feud the opposite way was fine, I just think it hasn't been executed as well
