It seems as though TNA has reached a plateau in terms of popularity. Pushing former WWE and WCW stars has gotten the company this far, but to break through that glass ceiling Dixie needs to do something that sets her product apart from Vince’s. TNA needs an attraction that is unique to them and only them. I have an idea that won’t necessarily make the Florida based promotion number one, but might encourage a significant amount of fans to “cross the line.â€
One of the most exciting times to be a sports fan is during ‘March Madness.’ Both causal and die hard college basketball fans spend hours filling out several tournament brackets and gluing themselves to the television to see if their predictions come to fruition. What I propose is TNA do something similar. Beginning at the Victory Road pay-per-view in March, at the height of the madness, the organization launches a 32 man tournament which would culminate at the No Surrender event in September. Not just any tournament, the biggest wrestling tournament in the history of the industry. 31 matches over the course of six months with the winner receiving a World Heavyweight title match in the main event of the promotion’s biggest PPV, Bound for Glory. During this time rivalries are birthed out of the happenings that occur during the tournament. Fans will be encouraged to fill out brackets on the TNAwrestling.com with a grand prize, such as a trip to Bound for Glory, going to the person with the most accurate predictions.
This idea would be an effective method of garnering interest in the TNA product for a number of reasons. Tournament matches would carry a more “must see†feel for those that took the time to fill out brackets. In addition, there would be more reasons for logical rivalries. Spots in the tournament would be so valuable that a loss or a run-in during a tourney match could create jealousy and hatred between two wrestlers with championship aspirations. The possibilities are endless. Lastly, much like the Royal Rumble does for Wrestlemania, the tournament would add prestige to Bound for Glory. If a company spends six months determining who will main event a single pay-per-view then it must be important, right? WWE always speaks about the ‘Road to Wrestlemania,’ now TNA would have its own ‘Road to Bound for Glory’ that is double the length of its counterpart. Like I said, this idea might not make TNA the number one organization in the world, but it is an original concept with a great deal of upside. What do you guys think?
