As of this writing, Nigel McGuinness has held the ROH World Title for 432 days, 30 days shy of Bryan Danielson’s record, and a lengthy 215 days away from breaking Samoa Joe’s historic run. He has retained the belt on 30 different occasions (1 more than Joe, 8 less than Bryan) against 20 different opponents. McGuinness has successfully defended the belt in 12 different states and 4 different countries. The list of failed challengers includes Danielson, Aries, Black, Jay Briscoe, KENTA, and most recently, Lynn. And yet for some reason, one would get the impression that Nigel believes he is not respected, that he still has something to prove, if not to the fans of Ring of Honor, than at least to himself.
It has been stated previously that perhaps McGuinness’ biggest enemy is his ever-expanding ego. But based on the numbers alone, Nigel has definitely proven deserving of the accolades he bestows upon himself. The problem seems to be more with his need to incessantly to remind anyone in earshot of how truly great he is and how he is the best wrestler in the world. The problem also stems from the manner in which he goes about it. He’s disrespectful, arrogant to a fault, going out of his way to rise the ire of, not only the fans, but also his fellow wrestlers. Never more was that true than in his absurd display of mockery following Nigel’s tainted victory of Jerry Lynn in Nashville, TN. It may not be true for every individual member of the ROH locker room, but the vast majority were apparently insulted by the champions words and embarrassed that this was the man holding the most precious title in the wrestling industry.
Jerry Lynn was in no frame of mind to give comment following his loss, but a bloody Bryan Danielson had this to say, “Nigel’s treatment of Jerry after the match was pathetic, and the exact opposite of how the ROH World Champion should carry himself. I’m truly ashamed that he represents this company that I hold so dear, and that he carries the title that so many men have broken their backs for! In part, I blame myself for not taking it away in Chicago, but if another opportunity comes my way…â€
Danielson is one of many who want that ROH World Title, each with their own internal motivation; be it glory, prestige, or hatred, every potential challenger has their reasons. Danielson and Aries have both been champion before, and would love to be again. Tyler Black has come so close twice before in his young career and wants nothing more than to be called ROH World Champion. Lynn obviously would love to garner a measure of revenge, and what better way than by taking the title as his own. Steen, Generico, Jacobs; each has come close, most have been shafted one way or another by McGuinness, and all would love one more shot at the brass ring.
The next man to step up to the plate will be Naomichi Marufuji at “Final Battle 2008†in a rematch over 2 years in the making. The last time, at “Glory by Honor V, Night 2†it was Marufuji who walked in with the title, GHC Heavyweight in this case, and walked out with it still around his waist. As fans will see in an upcoming Videowire, McGuinness has every intention of redeeming that loss, and showing the world just how much better he is now than he was in 2006.
“Bring ‘em all on I say.†McGuinness commented. “I’ve beaten everybody! In singles matches, Three-Way matches, Four Corner matches, tag matches. I’ve pinned them all, made them tap out, and not a bloody one of them has come close to takin’ the ROH World Title from me. I’ll break all the records as easily as I break jaws mate, and there’s not a bloody thing anyone can do to stop it!â€
Not only will another victory serve to feed his ego, but also it will infuriate the fans, as well as the rest of the locker room. And really, that’s what seems to drive a man like McGuinness. When it comes down to brass tacks that hate and disdain is what serves at his motivation. Every boo, every piece of trash, each profanity laced chant thrown in his direction is just fuel for the fire. It gives Nigel motivation, that motivation leads to victories, those victories build the ego, the ego draws the hate, and the circle goes on and on. Who is going to be the man to step up and break the cycle? Who will finally knock the king from the thrown and take his crown? There are plenty of barbarians at the gate…

I read this on ROHs site and found it interesting, he is nearing the record that Samoa Joe holds for longest reign as Champ. Do you think Nigel will break the record or will he lose the title just before getting that record? If you think he's gonna lose, who do you think he will lose to? Having that in mind, if he loses to Danielson he will become the first man to ever hold the ROH World title twice. That's something to think about so what are your thoughts?
