Captain Jack Sparrow has just planted a pirate flag in the 2017 movie season.

After a few false starts and delays, “Pirates of the Caribbean 5″ will sail into theaters on July 7, 2017, Walt Disney Studios said Wednesday. The latest rum-soaked installment in the Johnny Depp franchise has the date to itself, but faces competition from the July 14th release of “Fantastic Four 2″ and the June 30th debut of “Despicable Me 3.â€

Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who got their sea legs with “Kon Tiki,†will direct.

Disney has been getting way out ahead when it comes to dating its films. Last Friday it announced release dates for a quintet of untitled Marvel films, so get ready to enjoy the last of those come 2019.

“Pirates of the Caribbean 5″ was originally slated for a summer 2015 release date, but the film was pushed back over script issues. In the meantime, producer Jerry Bruckheimer ended his long-term deal with Disney last year and decamped for Paramount.

The Pirates movies have made $3.7 billion at the global box office and made Depp a superstar, so it’s easy to see why Disney wants to board the Black Pearl once more.

I find this line quite funny:

I already thought that Depp was a big name before the Pirates movies his career wasn't bad this just made it better not that the films were that great.

Depp is better and bigger than the Pirates franchise. The first two were excellent, the third was ok to make it a trilogy. Ever since they've looked awful. Hopefully "once more" means one last time.

Actually enjoyed the forth more than the second and third personally. Well up for one more.

Save for the awesome Davey Jones scenes and the Turner father and son moments, I hated everything about DMC. AWE could have been good, but it had a bajillion plot holes, so many disappointing and WTF moments that it ended up being even worse than DMC. OST was alright, but very bland.

It would seem the original was a one-hit wonder.

I'll probably end up seeing 5, out of curiosity sake. Via rental.
