    So multi-player works in that it's real-time but players can hit the pause button for a max of 60 seconds at a time to deal with big decisions and whatnot, but you can also do multi-player settings to make it so other players can't attack each other.

    You could kayfabe it as though he was playing the long con and knew even if you were overthrown there was nothing in it for him so he chose between the liege he hated or the rebellion he knew would fail/give him nothing. Sometimes you gotta ally with your hated rival to get what you really want.
