If Christianity would have died in the 1000s AD then we'd look at the Bible like we do the stories of Alexander the Great being the spawn of Achilles lol

It's clearly not true but that doesn't mean you discount the whole Alexander story, you just have to try and investigate the truth. But we can never really do that with the Bible when too many people still believe it as fact and likewise the edgy atheists then say it's all made up

Investigating the early history of Islam is even harder tbh I'm pretty sure the original Mecca was not located where it stands today and the one today may even be the third location. But bc it's so holy, to question that in anyway will get you shunned lol

This is cool, in Ghost of Tsushima, the Mongols you fight will have eagles that can alert them of your presence when you're sneaking around. I'm not surprised it's based in fact but I just never thought about it lol

I'm like a year out of being caught up on that podcast from the beginning. I really enjoy that they started short and are now just saying fuck it and doing 10 part long form histories lol they even say they're "going full Dan Carlin"

I always find it funny when I listen to people from the western stereotype world talk about how things like the Macedon implosion after Alexander (including the Ptolemaic dynasty for years after) or the Carthage side of the Punic Wars are too difficult to talk about bc everyone has the same 5 or so names

As if every medieval English story isn't based around a King William or Richard the 87th :lol which is funny bc that's actually why I never got super into that era of history, could never remember which king ruled when or where lmao

Speaking of a William, crazy fun fact is that Anglo-Saxon England had a history of selling people off into the Afro-Eurasian Slave Trade, but after his coronation, William the Conquerer actually banned a lot of slave laws that would have allowed slaves to be sold outside of England.

If you had to pick one 20th century dictator to live under, who would it be?

Tito and it's not even close. He made that impossible bastard country that called itself Yugoslavia actually function, and managed to not starve his country which is rare for the Eastern bloc

Yeah, especially if Tito could prevent the shitty Ante Pavelic movement from temporarily Nazifying Croatia.

For context, I was listening to the rest is history talk about Eva Peron this morning and they brought up that Juan Peron wasn't that bad as far as dictators went and then asked who their favorite dictator was and quickly pivoted before they went down that rabbit hole lol but I've been thinking about it all day bc it's such an interesting and realistic moral dilemma. What if the totalitarian actually does good, how do you discuss it lol

Surprisingly a lot of people also forget about Jozef Pilsudski, who took over Poland in a military coup and then gave Poland its democracy again.
