Further G1 Climax 35 details revealed! 【G135】

Play-in matches, tournament structure announced

Dominion saw the announcement of the initial lineup for G1 Climax 35, with sixteen of the twenty entrants revealed. Further details can now be revealed about the tournament of tournaments, set to get underway July 19 in Sapporo!

Watch all of G1 Climax 35 live in English on NJPW World!

With two blocks of ten wrestlers set to compete in the G1, four spots will be filled in play-in matches on the New Japan Soul tour. After the events of Dominion, these matches have now been set!

June 23, Korakuen Hall
0623_7.jpg

Callum Newman vs Taichi (A Block Play-In)
Despite a breakout 2025 in terms of performance with his first IWGP World Heavyweight Championship challenge, and two reigns as IWGP tag team Champion, Callum Newman’s 0-2 singles record in 2025, and status as the lowest point scorer in G1 Climax 34 has put him on the bubble for G1 Climax 35 inclusion. He will have a tall barrier to entry in the form of Taichi eight days after their IWGP Tag Team Championship match at Dominion. Taichi fell at the final hurdle of inclusion in last year’s tournament to Boltin Oleg, and was deeply embittered after the fact. With the Holy Emperor and his partner Tomohiro Ishii both needing to play in this year despite their newly claimed IWGP Tag titles, he’ll have even more bitterness and salt to bring June 23.

0623_6.jpg

Tomohiro Ishii vs Drilla Moloney (B Block Play-In)
Drilla Moloney joins Ryohei Oiwa in the stakes of prospective G1 debutants, needing a win to get into the field of 20. It’s an indication of just how hotly contested a spot in the G1 is that men of Moloney and Ishii’s calibre are in this position June 23, especially with their respective 2025 campaigns to this point. Moloney and Ishii are 1-1 this year with Moloney defeating Ishii in the New Japan Cup, and Ishii getting a win back to retain NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship gold at Resurgence in May. A rubber match will see a powerful War Dog or a vicious veteran pitbull in the running for the tournament of tournaments.

July 4, Tokyo Budokan
0704_01.jpg

Ryohei Oiwa vs Don Fale (A Block Play-In)
It’s another prospective first time entrant facing another who fell short in 2024 when Ryohei Oiwa takes on Chase Owens. For Oiwa, championship potential has been strong since his return from excursion in September, but the results haven’t been as forthcoming. As he seeks a spot in a tournament Zack Sabre Jr. won last year, and after Kosei Fujita captured Best of the Super Jr. in June, Oiwa looks to punch his ticket to the G1 July 4, but against HOUSE OF TORTURE's newest giant in Don Fale, does even Oiwa have the strength to overcome the size of Fale and the likely numbers game of H.O.T?

0704_02.jpg

YOSHI-HASHI vs Chase Owens (B Block Play-IN)
YOSHI-HASHI and Chase Owens will both be fighting to return to G1 competition, having been eliminated in the play-in stage last year. With best friend Hirooki Goto’s sensational 12 months since last year’s tournament as inspiration, can YOSHI-HASHI overcome the 'Lonestar Outlaw' Owens?
Further details have also been revealed as to the schedule and tournament structure of the G1. Opening Weekend this year is on July 19 and 20 in Sapporo's Hokkai Kita-Yell, and will see ten match cards with both blocks competing in their first two matches!

tournament-1.jpg

From there, A and B will compete on alternate nights through to A Block finals in Gunma on August 10 and B Block finals in Hamamatsu August 13. The top point scorers in each block will advance to the semifinals, while second and third place finishers will advance to the playoff stage on August 14 in Korakuen. Second place in A Block will face third place in B, and vice versa, with the winners of those matches filling out the semifinal bracket. August 16 in Ariake Arena, the semifinal matches will determine the finals the very next night, and with it the winner of G1 Climax 35!

Tanahashi's last G1... The man who could tell a better story in the ring than almost anyone in our time.

I have to change my sleeping so I am up in the middle of the night because I want to watch it all live.

Is there going to be a small chat for it?

Yeah I figured it would be difficult because you have a real job. But it will be good to see you in the chat for it. It is my favorite event of the year.

Callum Newman and Drilla Maloney win their play-in matches

Oh fuck off New Japan how can you not at least have one of the Tag Champions in the G1 Climax. I like Maloney more than Newman but it's not like either guy are going to do anything in the Tourney so I guess New Japan breaking my heart again not having Taichi win the G1 is off the Table this Year.
