G1 Climax 33 night 4 (July 19) Preview 【G133】

Sendai sees C and D Block action

The G1 Climax rolls on to Sendai on July 19, as night four will see blocks C and D do battle for the second time.
Watch all of G1 Climax 33 live in English on NJPW World!

Main event: C Block- Tomohiro Ishii (0-1) vs Tama Tonga (0-1)
Singles record: 2-1 Tama

After a memorable Korakuen hall main in 2022, Tomohiro Ishii and Tama Tonga top the card in Sendai for night four of G1 Climax 33. Last year it was third time lucky in singles competition against Tama, the Stone Pitbull resisting repeated attempts at the Gunstun to come out with the victory. After Ishii and Tama both lost to David Finlay and EVIL respectively in Sapporo, will Ishii even the ledger with Tama tonight, or will Tonga get on the board?

7th Match: D Block- Hirooki Goto (1-0) vs Tetsuya Naito (0-1)
Singles record 5-5

After Naito lost a main event war against Jeff Cobb on night two, and Hirooki Goto made short work of Toru Yano, the two sit at zero and two points going into the top D Block match of the night. It was at this point of the tour last year in Sendai that Goto scored an emotional victory over Naito to end a six year long drought against El Ingobernable and bring himself level with Naito in terms of career all time records. It was a match that also put Naito quickly on the brink of elimination in the small blocks of 2022, a brink that Naito was just about able to emerge from into the semifinals last year. This match again may prove crucial, but who comes away with the extra two points?

6th Match: C Block- HENARE (0-1) vs Shingo Takagi (0-1)
Singles record: 2-1 Takagi

A spring time rivalry is renewed as Shingo Takagi collides with HENARE. A new look for HENARE on his first G1 outing of the year was marked with bitter sweet feelings. After being honoured as a chief of northern New Zealand and continuing a milllennia long tradition of Mataora tribal markings, the Maori warrior has been filled with a very authentic fighting spirit, but was dropped by Mikey Nicholls in Hokkaido. Tonight he’ll look to make fuller use of that spirit to repeat his New Japan Cup success over Shingo Takagi, who started his own G1 with a loss to Eddie Kingston in Hokkaido. That NJC result would spark a KOPW 2023 Ultimate Triad match that ended in victory for Shingo- how will the third in this 2023 trilogy go?

5th Match: D Block- Hiroshi Tanahashi (0-1) vs Shane Haste (1-0)
20230719_G1_05.jpg

Coming off a loss to Zack Sabre Jr. and a win over Alex Coughlin on their first night outings, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shane Haste head to Sendai eager to get some and more points on the board. During World Tag League, it was a victory for Tanahashi and Toru Yano over Shane Haste and Mikey Nicholls- will Haste redress the balance one on one?

4th Match: C Block- Eddie Kingston (1-0) vs EVIL (1-0)
20230719_G1_04.jpg

After a wild battle in Sapporo against Shingo Takagi, Eddie Kingston turns his attention to EVIL. It’s a battle of the Mad King versus the King of Darkness in Sendai; in advance of the tournament, Kingston declared that if the hard fighter within EVIL wasn’t on display then there was no way the HOUSE OF TORTURE could win. What will happen tonight?

3rd Match: D Block: Jeff Cobb (1-0) vs Alex Coughlin (0-1)
Singles record: 1-0 Cobb

20230719_G1_03.jpg
A monster clash will see Jeff Cobb and Alex Coughlin doing battle. There’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance; a line walked by Cobb in Sapporo as he steamrolled Naito to win in fine form. Coughlin meanwhile had a match with Shane Haste in hand before he blew a considerable advantage, looking to make an example of his opponent. Both men have come a long way from their 2021 NJPW STRONG meeting, which ended with Cobb victorious. yet with Coughlin now representing the BULLET CLUB War Dogs, will he be too much of a match for the Imperial Unit two years on?

2nd Match: C Block- Mikey Nicholls (1-0) vs David Finlay (1-0)
20230719_G1_02.jpg

After both men won in Sapporo, Mikey Nicholls and David Finlay face off in Sendai. Will Nicholls, having shown considerable grit to put HENARE away, reach four points? Or after scoring his second straight singles win over Tomohiro Ishii, is Finlay undeniable?

1st Match: D Block: Toru Yano (0-1) vs Zack Sabre Jr. (1-0)
Singles record: 3-1 Sabre

20230719_G1_01.jpg

The night will start with Toru Yano taking on Zack Sabre Jr. Despite Yano’s best efforts over the years, with ample use of guardrails, tape and combinations of the two, he has never been able to beat the Frontman of TMDK during the G1 Climax itself. Could this year be different, as Yano seeks his first two points over the 1-0 ZSJ?
