Do you get hate for being a wrestling fan ?

Professional wrestling obviously has sporting elements. But the fact that the outcome of the matches are predetermined automatically mean you cannot classify it as a sport. That does not take anything away from the athletes. Well it does...but still.

If a football or boxing match has been fixed I will not consider it a sport. A sport that has a predetermined winner is not a sport imo. As it takes away all of the competitive and tactical elements. Along with some of the physical elements.

I have no problem with people calling it a sport though. Cuz the definition of a sport iis ambiguous as it is.

The point about figure skating and diving is a interesting point. These kind of sports are based on the aesthetics. They are judged on the merit of how good an action has been performed. Therefore is very much a competitive sport.

I respect the opinion but I disagree. Nothing about a sport signifies that it has to be competitive. If you haven't seen it, I would recommend watch Penn and Teller's show Bullshit, the episode about "Cheerleading." I think it makes a lot of arguments about cheerleading being a sport that are transferable to professional wrestling as well. I've shown it to several people who didn't believe so and quickly changed their minds.

But really, I'm not trying to change your mind, as we're all entitled to our opinions. But personally I've always found the opinion of professional wrestling as not being a sport simply because it's scripted to be silly for the reasons I stated above.

In a way, WWE has this going for them. The better you look in ring, the greater your chances of getting over and being pushed. So they do have aesthetic value playing a role here. A lot of what they do is based on looks, style, and general movements much like figure skating. Being able to "land moves" and what have you.

Professional wrestling is kind of a faux sport. It pretends there is a competition but there isn't, not really. You aren't competing if the result is predetermined. This is why suspending your disbelief makes it much more enjoyable, something I have trouble with when watching wrestling.

I don't know, never made a big deal out of it. Sometimes people don't even know I watch wrestling because it never came up in any conversation. It's not like I shy away from telling people either tho, I guess it's just weird to randomly start talking about it

No they are just figure skating. Of someone is throwing a football around by themselves. I wouldn't say they were engaging in sport. Practicing for sport.

Yes that is correct. But that is competition for a Job. Who can do the job the best. If I'm going for a job at a supermarket I would experience the same competition. I got to show I can do the job and not be late and shit. Its the same competition of you were going for a part in a film or being a fashion model.

I do understand that professional wrestling requires a lot of skill and talent that is very physically demanding. But the way I distinguish what a sport is a physical activity that challenges you physically and mentally. That also has direct competition.

I would argue that cheerleading is a sport. Unfortunately professional wresting does not fulfill my specification.

Well not unfortunately. My whole point is professional wrestling is not a sport and that's what makes it so entertaining.

It is something that you don't really see people talking about randomly with others. It isn't like "So how's them -insert local sports team-".

I mean occasionally they'll talk about Rock, Cena, Hogan from 2-3 years ago or that Trump angle from Mania 23 when that whole thing was going down. That's usually where I can jump in and drop that hot knowledge

Nah. My parents watched wrestling in the 80's, which Is how and when I started, and, they still enjoy the older stuff. They think it has gotten downright awful now, they aren't wrong.

No...no one around my "Neck of Woods" really cares about
wrestling anymore & if I mention it in conversation most people
just shrug and go:

"Oh...the WWE? Is that still a thing? I haven't watched that
since Stone Cold was on the show"

I do occasionally see the odd person in a wrestling shirt (mostly
Seth Rollins T-Shirts which is cool) but I never go up & talk to
them.

Mainly because I'm creepy looking motherfucker & they are most
likely to start screaming that they "Need an Adult!!!"

Never, one of my close friends who is currently incarcerated knows i'm a huge wrestling fan. He can be very critical about a lot of things but never made fun of me for liking wrestling.. I actually took him to a few wrestling shows a couple years ago, he got kicked out of one of them for being too drunk, I was stranded in downtown Toronto on New Years Eve because of that.

Wrestling is not fake. It’s real, obviously.

Also, wrestling is a sport. I view “sport” as anything that requires competition. Thus, wrestling is scripted, but these guys are competing against one another every night. They “sell” to make the other guy look good, but it makes them look good as well. No matter who wins or loses, the fans respect the overall wrestling ability of the superstar, which encompasses selling, storytelling in the ring, execution of moves, persona, promos, anything and everything related to wrestling. It’s one of the most competitive environments I’ve ever been apart of, and at the end of the day, win, lose, or draw, the superstar who can do all of the above the best, is the better competitor and ultimately “wins.”

And, all my friends know I’m a wrestling fan, and they make fun of me. But, I’m quick to remind them that I know MMA, then they stfu.

Of course, there's always people who talk shit about wrestling. But I have also had a bunch of people tell me how rad my nWo shirt is when I wear it in public.
