From what I've read his lady friend was also shot and killed so not exactly sure self-defense fits, but they haven't charged the suspect so maybe.

Someone who claims to know them(so it could be a lie as anyone can say that) said the guy was his girlfriends brother, and he shot him for shooting her or something. Let me go find the tweet.
