First alluded to during the recent news of their new media rights deal in Africa, WWE launched a talent search in the region called "The Search for Africa's Next Superstar."
Announced in Lagos, Nigeria, where WWE will host a multi-day tryout in February 2023, the competition is open to citizens of any African country. Applications are being taken now through December 18th.
From Tuesday's release:
"Interested candidates will be asked to submit a video highlighting their potential to become a WWE Superstar. Successful applicants will be invited to participate in the Lagos tryout in February 2023. A select number of tryout participants will then be awarded an all-expenses-paid experience to continue their tryout journey alongside current and prospective WWE Superstars ahead of WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles in April 2023. A full-time WWE developmental contract may be offered to the top-performing participants who will then begin their new career at the world-class WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida."
It was not announced if the tryouts and search will be part of a TV show for WWE Network.
Last Wednesday, WWE announced a partnership extension and expansion with MultiChoice that brings WWE Network to their Showmax streaming service. MultiChoice's SuperSport channel will continue to air live episodes Raw, SmackDown and NXT in addition to their premium live events.
That same day on WWE's quarterly investors call, WWE co-CEO Nick Khan talked about the show and said if they can find one star in Africa that resonates with the people there, it's a win for WWE. If that person resonates to a global audience, even better.
