WCW Womens Championship

Today I learned that there was a WCW Womens Championship that existed between December '96 - January '98

It was held by two people, Akira Hokuto and Devil Masami for one time each.

And that was it.

Clearly not much happened with it because I was a big WCW fan back in the day and I don't remember it at all. Was anyone else aware of the title existing?

Yes, of course :D
If the story hasn't been revoked at some point... the whole point of Alundra Blayze/Madusa jumping ship was that WCW promised her to build a competitive Women's division. Half a year later, after her feud with Sherri Martel/Col. Parker, they brought Bull Nakano in and shortly after that the Title was created.

Madusa lost against Akira in that Tournament final and I'm pretty sure they planned on doing that, so Madusa can beat her later, kinda with an old school Hogan story attached to it (Pro USA vs. Evil Japan, Luna Vachon (who was in the company for like 5 months or so) interfered in matches for Akira, Hero overcomes at the end), BUT when the Great American Bash and their Title vs. Career Match came around, Madusa lost again and was gone for two years. I'm not sure if she was just fed up and wanted to leave at that point, or if she was injured.

I'm also pretty sure they gave her the Cruiserweight Title in '99 as kind of a consolation prize for that mess.

For reference sake:
The Starrcade ´96 Women's Championship Tournament Final:

And the Great American Bash Title vs. Career Match:

It was featured so sparsely, I can't really pinpoint the Nitro episodes, otherwise I'd post all Reliving the War episodes which featured the story.

I vaguely remember this title. I could’ve sworn Medusa held it, because as mentioned above that’s why she jumped ship.

Yeah let's be honest WCW wanted Alundra/Medusa mainly because they knew she was a major Star not just in WWE but overseas in Japan and once they got her in the Company they were like crap we need to do something with her now because she ain't going to want to stay too long just sitting around. I would say in 96 it was my first taste of seeing ladies like Akira Hokuto and Company just wished we had the Internet has strong today like in 96 because I would of never of went outside with me just watching Joshi like a hibernating Bear.

There wasn't enough women's wrestlers so WCW deviated the title and sent Madusa home for two years. They brought her back with Macho Man. I believe she was still with WCW when they folded.
