WCW Starrcade “BattleBowl”
Atlanta, Georgia
December 28th, 1992

JR introduces Eric Bischoff, who gives us a special report informing us that Rick Rude has suffered a herniated disc and will NOT challenge Ron Simmons for the World Title tonight. The Board of Directors made a last minute decision to give the shot to Dr. Death Steve Williams tonight.

Backstage: Tony Schiavone interviews “Cowboy” Bill Watts & Hank Aaron; Bill says battlebowl was a dream of Dusty Rhodes and he’s happy it’s going strong, mentions that Sting won it last year so he wants Sting to come out so Hank can give him the BattleBowl rings :lmao them trying to hype it up saying this is like a superbowl ring. Sting comes out and he gets the ring, and he says he hopes he can make it two in a row (Man the ring must have sucked balls for Sting not even wanting to put it on and show the folks at home or at the arena, pointless shit)

Missy Hyatt and Larry Zbyszko are doing the drawings for the evening.

Lethal Lottery Match: Van Hammer & Dan Spivey vs. Johnny B Badd & Cactus Jack
Dan and Hammer get this match started and HOLY SHIT! Hammer is aready in slow motion 4 seconds into the match, he gets the better of Jack for the most part until Jack tags Badd in as they go back and forth until Badd kills Hammer with a ‘rana as Hammers lands on the back of his head and neck. Dan tags in and he and Jack do some face paced stuff for a bit, neither team has the advantage for long as both teams do stuff until from the apron Dan knees Badd in the back allowing his team to work on Badd for a bit. Until Jack makes the hot tag, it was nothing special. Dan flings Jack to the floor but he gets back in he goes for a tag but Badd isn’t on the corner for the tag which allows Dan to jump him from behind getting the advantage back for his team. At one point Hammer hits a flying shoulderblock, and Badd accidentally drops an elbow on Cactus while trying to save. Both men punch one another allowing Van Hammer to roll him up Cactus for the win. Boring match, that did nothing for me. ¾*

Missy's spins the tumbler and Larry goes to pick. There's a split screen of the face and heel locker room. Larry reads out the first name which is “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes and then his tag partner is VAN VADER :mark: And their opponents are...Kensuke Sasaki and Barbarian.

The Barbarian & Kensuke Sasaki vs. Dustin Rhodes & Vader (w/Harley Race)
Vader/Barbarian interaction :mark: Vader offers a handshake and then shoves him back. SHIT IS ON! Neither man will budge at first as Barbarian clothesline does nothing and neither does one of Vader’s, so they lock up again as Barbarian slams Vader but he’s back up. They fight into the corner with Vader slamming him but he’s up just as fast. Neither man go down on shoulder tackles but Vader does the double tackle and begins to beat the shit out of him with left and rights in the corner. Barbarian finally takes him down after the 3rd clothesline but Vader comeback with one of his own before tagging in Dustin for a little teamwork for two. Dustin tries to lock in a side headlock but that gets countered into a back suplex as Kensuke tags in, he and Dustin go a little back and forth with the physically on par as the Vader/Barbarian stuff :mark: Vader tags in and kills Kensuke with a flying splash off the middle rope to him, he begins to beat on him for a bit with every move being as brutal or worse than the next. Out of desperation Kensuke suplexs Vader and tags in the Barbarian as Vader tags in Dustin, Dustin gets the better of that interaction nailing him with a clothesline for two. Dustin and Kensuke have a little chopping contest in the corner as the Barbarian comes charging in but at the last second Dustin moves allowing Barbarian and Kensuke to collide. Dustin then simply rolls up Barbarian for the win. Post-Match: Vader acts like he’s happy with the win until he clotheslines the shit out of him, and Race drops a knee for good measure. Vader, Race and Barbarian leave together. Real fun stiff match here with nothing wasted. *** - ***1/4

Missy's spins the tumbler again as Larry draws the names of, Barry Windham & Great Muta and they will face Flyin’ Brian & 2 Cold Scorpio. OH SHIT!

Lethal Lottery Match: Barry Windham & The Great Muta vs. Flyin’ Brian & 2 Cold Scorpio
Interesting note here; Brian & Windham would team later for a Tag Team match tonight SWERVE! Windham and 2 Cold start for some back and forth stuff until Muta tags in :( we gets like 10 seconds on 2 Cold/Muta until Brain tags in, he and Muta do some real sweet face paced counter wrestling until Windham and Brian go at it. Both men show respect until Whindham chops him first so we get a battle of chops before Windham backs him in his corner for a muta tag. Yay, more Muta/Brian goodness with Muta hitting a sweet spin kick but he taunts him way too long leading to Brian slinging him face first into the middle buckle. 2 Cold begins to work over Muta but when he goes for a splash Muta gets the knees up before tagging in Windham who takes hit head off with a clothesline and a sweet looking punch. Muta/Windham now begin to work over 2 Cold, that last several minutes but they don’t pick a specific body part instead they go from ribs to leg so as a resold 2 Cold sells none of it. 2 Cold does hit a AWESOME! slingshot 450-splash but Windham breaks it up as all 4 men are now in the ring, Windham kills 2 Cold with a DDT and Muta finishes him off with a moonsault for the win, lol @ Brian taking 30 seconds to get from the ramp into the ring to break up the count but he took too long and couldn’t get there in time. Post-Match: Windham and Brian leave together ‘cause world title shot > this. Fun match here, I would love to see 2 Cold/Muta vs. Windham/Brian in like a longer match though. **3/4 - ***

We go back to the tumbler, with Larry pulling out Sting’s partners Dr. Death Steve Williams. JR does a quick save saying that when you win, you're automatically in the next year. Their opponents, ERIK WATTS! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! And his partner is JUSHIN “THUNDER” LIGER.

Lethal Lottery Match: Dr. Death Steve Williams & Sting vs. Jushin Liger & Erik Watts
Sting and Williams has so much potential, poor Liger tho stuck with this as whip. Sting and Liger start, we get a good sequence of moves, tons counters until Williams’s tags in and begins to rough up Liger but Liger uses his quickness to tags in Watts who looks like shit. He and Williams are wearing the same colour pants. Poor Williams, Watts sucks the life out of me and this match whenever he does anything but thankfully Williams cuts him off with cheap shots until Liger comes in but Williams kills him with a LARIET! Sting has Liger in a dominator position but rams him chest first into the buckle as the team of Sinlliams 8D begins to work over Liger. They start off working his mid-section but Williams begins to target the arm, while Sting works on the lower back. They do quite a bit of quick tags, as Williams connects with a sick sidesuplex as Sting tags in for two. Sting connects with a vertical suplex for another two, but Liger comes back with a bulldog and Watt’s tags in. He botches a dropkick twice in a fuckin’ row before applying the stf but Williams gets to the ropes. Williams’s pulls him to the apron before catching him in a crossbody and Stun gun’s Watts for the win. Fun whenever Sting/Williams and Liger were in, Watt’s sucked balls like always. **

NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Masa Chono vs. The Great Muta
The first 10 seconds of this was great as they go right into a Japanese style match hitting one another and the other one coming back strong with strikes. But then they begin, to slow it down and feel one another out even with Muta stalling, isn’t he suppose to be the face here? Since when do faces get the breathers to start? This felling out lasts like 4 minutes but it felts like 40 and didn’t accomplish anything. I’m not saying it was bad ‘cause everything was sound, but it didn’t lead to anything and just felt like a filler. Chono begins to work the knees for a bit, but that doesn’t go anywhere so he goes after the arm instead. Chono randomly breaks it and heads to the top, but Muta catches him and suplexs him off the top, he hits a back drop and applies a half boston crab as JR wonders what it would be called in Japan. Muta begins to work the knee now with a bridging Indian death lock. Chono no sells it and gets to his feet first and attacks Muta but muta comes back with a spinning kick as Chono heads out for a breather, after more stalling Muta hits the handspring elbow and signals for the end he heads up for the moonsault but when he lands on his feet he acts like he jammed his knee allowing Chono to kick away at the knee and the head. Both men attempt dropkicks and miss, but Chono comes back with a side suplex, he goes for another but Muta adjusts in mid air landing on him for two. Muta goes for a dropkick but misses allowing Chono to lock in the STF for the win. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! FUCK THIS MATCH, AND FUCK THE WORLD! *

JR & Ventura talk about the World Title match, and that because Rude can’t compete tonight the NWA has set up a tournament with the winner facing Rude @ Saturday, January 29th for the US title. JR says it Rude is unable to compete he will be stripped of the title, suddenly. Rick Rude comes out and gets on the mic. He says he's been stabbed in the back by WCW because the doctors tell him he can't compete tonight, and it's ruined what was to be the biggest night of his career. And now, WCW twists the knife even more because they're holding a #1 Contender's Tournament for the US Title and say that if Rude's not able to meet the winner of the tournament on January 23rd, he'll not only be stripped of the United States title which he's held for more than a year, but he'll be stripped of his #1 contender to the World Title status. He says it’s funny things didn’t go down that way when, Vader broke Sting's ribs when he was World Champion, and when Sting didn't compete for close to three months, nobody said a word. CONSPIRACY! NO ONE IS TAKING HIS TITLE! Ventura then mentions that today is the 28, so why not give him until 28th of next month that’s only 27 days :lmao AWESOME!

WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Dr Death Steve Williams vs. Ron Simmons
Williams and Simmons shake on respect, before breaking free and attempting a test of strength. We get another lengthy test of strength as both men do that NFL running tackle into one another spot, what a waste but Ron being the obvious smarter one leapfrogs a charging Williams and clotheslines him before locking in a arm bar, but Williams rolls to the floor. LOL @ Williams pulling on Ron’s picky head to try and gain a advantage, they lock up again but Williams get frustrated cause he can’t get the better so he forearms him in the head for a break. They lock up again and another hair pull from Williams leads to them standing nose-to-nose and finally begins to slug it out. Ron hits him with a back elbow before ramming his face into the mat; Ron goes back to the arm and works away at it. He heads up top for what looks to be like a flying shouldertackle but Williams’s side steps him and begins to work of Williams’s knee using the ring ropes and the apron. He gets back into the ring and locks in a weird half Boston crab before working over the knee again. This goes on for several minutes until he goes into the 3 point stance and takes out Ron’s knee twice, but on the third Ron clotheslines him and makes a comeback no selling the fuck at of the knee, he hits a awful looking spinebuster as JR tries to save it by saying his knee almost gave out :lmao C’MON JR. Ron goes into the 3 point stance now and he takes out the knee of Williams twice but on the third Williams ducks and Ron falls to the floor. Both men head out to the floor and brawl until the count of 10 leading to the double countout. Post-Match: They continue to fight on the floor as it looks like Williams is about to ram him into the post but Ron slips out and sends him into the post. Ron then gets back into the ring and Williams’ jumps him and begins to beat him up. Terrible, absolutely terrible. The ref reverses the decision and awards the victory to Simmons via DQ. HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU REVERSE A DOUBLE COUNTOUT TO A DQ JUST BECAUSE OF POST-MATCH VIOLENCE! FUCK YOU WATTS AND FUCK THIS MATCH. *

WCW World Tag Team Championships: Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas vs. Barry Windham & Flyin’ Pillman
Shane and Brian start and it’s good fun, tons of speedy counters with Shane using close fists. Brian gets the better with a chop but can’t maintain control as Shane nails him with a dropkick sending him to the floor. The tag champs now begins to double team Windham as Brian just lets it happen :lmao Windham finally gets back into the corner and he’s pissed so he tags in and shouts that he wants Steamboat. Steamboat/Windham ruled with Steamboat being a ninja, the champs (IDK if they even had a name, I’ll check Google now. No they don’t so I guess I’ll just cal them champs) Well the champs begin to work over Windham working over his neck, at one point Steamboat took a cheap shot on Brain before sending Windham to the floor and delivers a scoop slam on the floor. Shane then brings Windham onto the apron and he scoop slams him on the ram now. Reverse neckbreaker gets a two by Steamboat as the champs continue to work the neck and back on Windham, until out of desperation Windham connects with a chin breaker leading to Brian tagging in, Brian takes a sick bump to the floor when Shane dropkicks Brian to the floor and his chin hits the rails. Shane then heads up top but Windham distracts Shane long enough for Brian to dropkick Shane to the floor with his knee and back hitting hard. Windham/Brian heat was damn fun as they did a fabulous job of cutting the ring in half, cheating whenever they could. I loved Shane bumping during the heat, he made them look like a million bucks and suck ruthless bastards. I LOVE IT! At one point the ref is distracted with Brain as Steamboat runs around and hits Windham in the back with a chair :mark: dat heel work, wait? Brain cuts off Shane as they continue to work over him in their corner. Windham hits a series of suplexes. The heels continue to dominate until out of desperation Shane hits suplex and falls into a tag. Steamboats hot tag ruled ‘cause it’s Steamboat but he gets caught in a powerslam followed by a back suplex by Windham. Brian suckers Shane in so he throws him over for the top rope; Windham then rams his head into the post as JR yells that should be a DQ TWICE! Steamboat manages to come off the top with a chop for two, as he and Brian go back and forth but Brian hits a headscissors for two, Windham tags in with Windham beating him up but Steamboat fights back with chops and now punches but he gets cut-off with a boot. He misses a axe handle off the top and that allows Steamboat to face plant Windham to the mat. Shane gets tagged in and takes out both men as now the match has broken down, Steamboat crossbodies Windham over the top to the floor as Shane hits Brian with the belly-to-belly for the win. Awesome match that did a lot more than I expected, you know I’ve never seen that match before and I’m now kicking myself wondering why. **** - ****1/4

Finals Of The King of Cable Tournament: Sting vs. Big Van Vader (w/Harley Race)
Vader comes out wearing one of those head caps that PHX’s wear mean SHIT IS GONNA GET REAL! Vader punks, no sells and beats the shit out of him early and I love it. He pretty much toys with Sting in the early portion with power, and he makes It look easy. Sting charges at Vader full-steam and goes down like he ran into a brick wall. Vader presses Sting up and then drops him throat-first on the top rope. Not once, but twice. When Sting rolls back in he hits a series Kappou Kick followed by a German, SWEVE! He then hits the Cactus clothesline that sends both men to the floor and the impact was so high that Vader’s mask came off. Stings not done as he hits a tope suicide that takes both Race and Vader out. All that seem to do was PISS Vader off cause as soon as he gets into the ring be begins to knock the paint off Stings face, but Sting uses quickness to move away but when he comes in charging for the Stinger splash Vader kicks him in the face. But Sting comes back and hits a DDT, he follows up with a DDT off the middle rope but Vader kicks out at two. Sting locks him in the Scorpion death lock but Vader reaches the ropes and he rolls to the floor. Vader begins to walk around ringside as Sting goes out to follow him, he walks over to the guardrail and Sting tries to capitalize with the Stinger Splash, but Vader moves and Sting hits the steel. Vader begins to work over the chest and mid-section of Sting now, which is just brutal. Some of Vader’s straight right hands are AMAZING! Vader wants another short-arm clothesline, but Sting blocks and gets a backslide for a near fall. Sting attempts a sunset flip and Vader won’t go down. Vader tries to squash him, but Sting moves at the last second. Vader is PISSED! So he connects with some beautiful rights but Sting hits a desperation side suplex but Vader is up first and covers him for two before going back to the neck. Sting already covering up before Sting even comes close to him in the corner:mark: Vader hits like 12 unanswered punches and begins to punch him in circles, he places Sting on top and tries to superplex him off but Sting fights off with a thumb to the eye and shoves him down, but Vader is up again first and Vader punches him from left to right into each turnbuckle as Stings gameplan of punching Vader out seems to be working as Sting hulks up and Sting takes advantage by knocking him down. Sting connects with Samoan drop followed by a huge splash off the top for two, Race gets up on the apron and distracts Sting, allowing Vader to deck him from behind. Vader hits a chokeslam and delivers a splash from the middle rope. He’s not done he goes up a 2nd time but when he comes leaping off Sting catches him in mid-air powerslaming him on the way down for the win. Post-Match: Jesse Ventura gets into the ring and presents Sting the trophy and he celebrates. He thanks the fans and thanks Vader for a great match; he then promises he's going to win Battle Bowl. HOLY! FUCKIN’ SHIT! An outstanding match that elevated both guys, Vader was an animal in there with way-too-realistic punches and I would be shocked to hear is Sting didn’t have a concussion after that beating. Sting played a great babyface, and prob did some of his best selling ever. ****1/2

Battlebowl Royal
HOW THE FUCK IS THIS THE MAIN EVENT! :lmao The guys in this match are; Van Hammer, Dan Spivey, Big Van Vader, Dustin Rhodes, The Great Muta, Barry Windham, Dr. Death Steve Williams & Sting. Sting and Vader meet in the aisle, ‘cuase they still got unfinished business :mark: Rhodes and Windham go at it and so do the others, but no fucks are given. Vader chucks Sting back into the ring and then takes a running start and hits a NO HANDS DIVING LARIAT INTO THE RING ONTO STING! I LOVE YOU VADER! After a few minutes of punches and kicks in corners, until Dr. Death eliminates Van Hammer, as Rhodes bulldogs Windham's face right on the ramp. Sting dumps Spivey onto the ramp and thinks he can go back in, but the ref says he's eliminated. it says "both feet must touch the floor," not the ramp 8D Vader goes after Muta, but Sting hits the Stinger Splash on Vader to save Muta from being eliminated. Vader takes advantage with the body punches and hits a running lariat to Sting that sends them both of them onto the ramp for the elimination. We’re down to Dustin, Windham, Muta and Williams. Dustin & Barry continue to brawl with Dustin breaks Windham’s nose with that cast, Dustin starts to dump Windham out but Steve comes over, seemingly to save Windham, but Steve gets caught up and Windham dumps them both out :lmao That leaves Windham and Muta, the crowd finally come alive for Muta as Windham beats him up for like 2 or 3 minutes, Muta gets tossed out but skins the cat and roars back with a series of dropkicks. The final one sends Barry tumbling over the top to give Muta the win, just another battle royal for me.

Much better than the '91 Starrcade at least. That one was 100% Battlebowl, nothing else.

But maybe they book things differently in Japan, also I really don't see the big deal, its not like people are any less likely to cheer for Muta as a result.
What is the problem with the finish? Also giving it one star is insulting, it didn't live up to the talent involved, but it was still much better than that.

Yeah Jesse was a treat all show, and I still say the mix of him and JR was one of the best.

KOC I think was Sting-Vaders best ever match which is saying something.

Maybe they gave Muta the Battlebowl to make up for how he was treated during his last stint with the company. Also it did lead to the NWA so at least there was a purpose.

So, he's supposed to give a free pass because a match may have sucked in his eyes, but he can't say that because everyone involved have good resumes?

No, not saying that, one star just seems a bit extreme, that should be reserved for something truly dire and I would define anyone to say that match was that bad, but each to their own.

Keith, I've seen your match ratings and you just rate things much higher than Fab normally. It's like you scale is from 2 stars to 5 stars while his is from 0 to 5. You'd probably think the same of the match, but rate it higher just because that's how your ratings usually work.

I don't particularly understand what the ratings system on wrestling matches are used for, the moves? Is this like judging gymnastics? This is why I don't respect or give creedence to Meltzer's rating system because he never goes into the story details of what is going on in a match...he just lists moves and spots. Which just shows me, what knowledge he has in the storytelling aspect of pro wrestling.

So Keith have you seen the match, if so what did you think and enjoy about that makes it higher than a star.

I've seen quite a few times, but would have to watch it again to give you a full reason. I take Chris' point about your rating system being a bit different, but still feel one star is a little low. I would have it at two and an half or three. To me that means a decent match, but one with a number of flaws. Whereas one or two stars means either terrible or very poor.

To answer deezy's question I rate matches on the wrestler's performance, the booking (in terms of logic, storytelling etc.), and crowd reaction.

See I don't rate matches, but when I see a match rated ***, I expect it go be a good match but maybe lacking in the way of crowd reaction or anything just absolutely spectacular. I'd say anything between ** and *** is decent, and poor matches would be between * or **.

Yes, but when you see movies rated out of five, then I am pretty sure that a three would be the closest you get to a middle rating, also you rarely get something as bad to be rated zero. Anyhow who knew a Starrcade 92 thread would take on a life of its own:lmao

You put everything on such a limited scale, what exactly is the point of the 5 star rating system? Everything is atleast a 3 is piss poor and lazy.

No, there is lots of things I have rated two and one, maybe less with wrestling than with films for some reason.

Yes which is pretty much what I said.
