With regards to Ohtani it's "10 years $700 Million." But a shit ton of it is deffered. So it's not 10 years $700M really. While the numbers aren't out I'd bet at least half of it is deffered.

And I guess the argument for a cap of a max is to "balance" things in regards to market size. Since large markets have a major advantage in spending capital, so while yes, players can earn what they want, it also becomes discouraging as a fan if a team can pay a handful of big free agent players double a team's entire payroll if they want.
