That's less a smart play and more the first basemen being unbelievably stupid. How the fuck do you not tag up the 1st base?
Maybe it's because he didn't extend his leg enough to touch the plate. And yes it's his fault. Give the Cubs credit for a play like that and put the embarrassment on the first basemen.
