Rory MacDonald-Robbie Lawler Official For UFC 167

[No More Sorrow]

A key welterweight contest between Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler has been made official for UFC 167: St-Pierre Vs. Hendricks.The card takes place November 16 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Georges St-Pierre defends the UFC welterweight title vs. Johny Hendricks in the main event.


MacDonald (15-1) is unbeaten in his last five, including a recent decision victory over Jake Ellenberger.


Lawler (21-9) is 2-0 since returning to the UFC and the 170-pound division. That includes finishes of both Josh Koscheck and Bobby Voelker.


The bout will likely serve as the co-main event and could determine the next contender to the belt.

I really like this fight, and think it's no coincidence that Rory is going to be co-maineventing to GSP's title fight. Pretty much exactly what the UFC wants.

I really don't think UFC should be building this guy as GSPs successor, he just doesn't scream star to me, he has the verbal skills of stroke victim and doesn't have a dynamic personality a very skilled fighter for sure, but doesn't have that "it" factor that draws people in imo.

Plus he's a Vancity hipster douche and will be cheering for Lawler to knock this guy out.

Yeah what Dale said, GSP has all the personality and verbal skills of a robot thats been switched off, and I think its fair to say he's not unpopular. I'm not sure what GSP does that has him being so beloved honestly, he's not exciting in the cage either.

Rory has the talent to be a top fighter and thats all that really matters. Not everyone can be as good on the stick as The Warmaster.

GSP doesn't have to cut Sonnen promos, he's a pretty boy with an accent. Doesn't make it difficult to market that guy to a mass audience. If the bitches love him, thats all that matters.

And skill doesn't pay the bills, you need to be able to market yourself. This is the fight business and business ins't a booming at the moment and you need something that makes people interested in you. Does any casual fan even know who Rory McDonald is? I see more star potential in a Jordan Mein than I see in Ares the god of war.

You do realise 99% of fighters given themselves their own nicknames, there's alot of ego in professionally fighting. GSP's still the dullest person to ever be prominently featured on camera, if prettyboy looks is all he has going for him then it shows just how easy it is to become a superstar. People are a little down on Rory Mac right now because of his last fight, as we all know in MMA you can have 20 exciting fights, but if you have one dull fight you're labeled a boring fighter for life, but he still has a big upside and talent in all area's.

How many star fighters are made a star for anything other than their fighting?

Shogun, Wandy, Liddel, Rampage, Fedor, Cain, JDS, JBJ, Anderson, Hendo, Bendo, Machida etc. all fighters who mad it big because of their skills. Sonnens really the only guy who's only a star because he yaps away 24/7 about how badass he is, then come fight time just wrestlehumps.

GSP is maintstream star getting movie roles in Marvel movies, he isn't as dumb as you proclaim. He takes care of his brand very well. And your list of stars is absolutely hilarious, outside of Chuck Liddell and Rampage none of those guys are mainstream stars.

You dont have to be a Mainstream star to be a star in MMA though. This requirement that to be a star you have to have been in a movie is ridiculous.

Being a star in MMA is subjective, it's like being a pro-wrestling star. If someone outside of that fanbase doesn't know who you are, does that make you a star? Would be like comparing a Raven to a Goldberg. You don't have to be in a movie to be a mainstream star, you just need people who don't follow the sport to know who you are.

That is how drawing power is made, and a person like GSP is the king of PPV buys in MMA, which is why he is a star and Rory McDonald won't be, because he has the charisma of melting vanilla ice cream. Skills alone don't pay the bills my friend.

Not many non MMA fans know who GSP is, you have to be moderately interested in MMA to know any MMA fighters, especially by name. Goldbergs never been a mainstream star. He's on a few crappy reality shows that all of 3 people watch and was in the worst of the Universal Soldier movies. Hardly a star. Featuring in dud movies and shows doesn't make a star just because you were in a movie. A guy like Rory Mac can still be an MMA star which is all that matters in MMA. If he did become a mainstream star Dana would just turn on him and bitch him out anyway. To be a star in your chosen sport you don't have to have worked with Michael Bay, hell the biggest names in Rugby Union don't star in movies doesn't mean they aren't gods in the Rugby world. Biggest names in Soccer are big household names because of how well they play.
