Carpenter directed the whole scene actually. He added it in post. Originally we go from the house to hospital. Carpenter added the knife, her death, and Michael hearing Laurie would be at the hospital in the square when the punks walk by with a boom box, etc.

Ahh, that clears it up then. I kind of think he had a say in how Rosenthal shot the later stuff in the hospital when Myers is chasing Laurie as well.
