Looks like UFC president Dana White is close to making the talk of the show in Afghanistan a reality. Even facing huge logistical hurdles, he is confident he will be able to make it happen, stating "We actually want to go right into Afghanistan and put on an event in the middle of all the [expletive]," White said. "It's going to happen.... Anything can happen if you want it to happen bad enough."
He was recently quoted as saying "Possibly within "two to three months." when talking about whether he thought plans for the huge undertaking would continue.
We have heard rumors of this for months now, but it looks like like it actually might be pulled off. White said the Afghanistan event will happen regardless of whether a live U.S. broadcast is possible.
This is one of the main reasons that at the end of the day, when you weigh the pros and cons of having a guy as controversial and outspoken as Dana White as the President of the UFC, I find myself in favor of what he brings to the sport and the organization.
He went on to say:
"We're working on it right now, and it's so crazy," White said. "It's going to be so freaky that they can't tell us exactly when and where it's going to be. The military is going to let us know when we can do it."
"It's going to be crazy, man. We're going to go right into the middle of this thing and put on an event."
If you're not a fan of Dana White, you still have to respect the support he has shown the troops and the military in general. And these days, MMA has become a big part of the armed forces. In December of 2006, there was the Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Riggs show from the USMC base in Miramar. After that in 2008, it was the "Fight for the Troops" event in Fayetteville, NC in front of 15,000 Ft. Bragg soldiers, raising money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, an organization that the UFC has supported in the past.
