One Man Team

Today the Captain of my Rugby League team Sean O'Loughlin announced he will retire at the end of the current season which is a few short games away.

I'm heartbroken but at the same time understanding and again at the same time proud to death of the legacy he is leaving behind. 19 years with Wigan and he could have gone absolutely anywhere. He has offers from the other side of the world and said no.

All of the above is gonna be really irrelevant to most, if not all of you.

The point is, who is the best one team man you know of?

Jordan had Scotty Pippen and Dennis Rodman; the Chicago Bulls were hardly a one-man team.

Yes... that's why it took them until 1991, Larry Bird and Bill Laimbeer's Celtics/Pistons respectively to get old before they started winning with just Jordan and Pippen.

Hardly. Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time, but flat out, the Chicago Bulls were not a one-man team. When your team is led by two Hall of Famers for the first three championships and then three in the last three, it's not a one-man team.

For further perspective, the greatest hockey player of all-time, Wayne Gretzky, and his Oilers, were not a one man team. During Gretzky's time with them, he had no less than 5 Hall of Famers playing next to him. Wayne Gretzky did not carry the team, he did not put the entire team on his back. Neither did Michael Jordan. Jordan had an excellent supporting cast.

Adrian Peterson had nobody, and still put the entire team on his back. Ken Griffey Jr. for his first few years put the Mariners on his back, I'd argue that the Seahawks today is a one-man team of Russel Wilson.


Though now I realize all this arguing is entirely pointless because it was meant to be a soccer related topic.

The OP talks about Rugby and he ended with asking what everyone's favorite one man teams are for any sport bc no one here cares about Rugby


I really can't think of any tbh, Jordan came to mind at first but I agree with you that still wasn't a one man team. Maybe Barry Sanders bc he did carry the Lions to the playoffs.
