(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #1 Los Angeles Lakers

It was good while it lasted, but the Lakers ended the Suns undefeated playoff run. After a close first, the Lakers dominated the game and the Suns had no chance. Bernard King had 36 while Magic Johnson notched another triple-double (18-10-13). Those who thought the Suns may have all the momentum against the tired Lakers were proven wrong. Mike Woodson led Phoenix with 22.

LAKERS 111, Suns 100 (Lakers lead 1-0)

Suns Stats
Mike Woodson: 22 PTS, 3 AST, 3 STL
Clyde Drexler: 16 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST, 2 BLK

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 36 PTS, 6 REB, 2 STL
Magic Johnson: 18 PTS, 10 REB, 13 AST, 3 STL
Buck Williams: 15 PTS, 11 REB

Game 1 - #4 Boston Celtics at #3 Chicago Bulls

Larry Bird’s
all-around game didn’t mean a thing as Dominique bulldozed Boston with 44 points to take Game 1 for Chicago. While Bird was fantastic (29-7-8), he or Short had no luck stopping Dominique. Celtics will need to find a way if they want to return to the Finals.

BULLS 121, Celtics 102 (Bulls lead 1-0)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 29 PTS, 7 REB, 8 AST, 11/18 FG, 5/5 3P
Purvis Short: 20 PTS, 6 AST, 10/19 FG

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 44 PTS, 6 REB, 4 STL, 16/23 FG, 12/15 FT
Alvan Adams: 21 PTS, 2 STL, 2 BLK

***

Game 2 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

Game 2 was more of the same of Game 1 as the Lakers were completely unstoppable. Magic went for a 21-9-14, Buck Williams and Bernard King added a combined 52 points, and even the bench got into it a bit. Clyde Drexler was better here with 26, but the Suns as a whole need to find some of what they had earlier in these playoffs or a sweep is inevitable.

LAKERS 137, Suns 113 (Lakers lead 2-0)

Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 26 PTS, 4 AST, 2 STL
Mike Woodson: 24 PTS

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 29 PTS, 5 REB, 12/19 FG
Magic Johnson: 21 PTS, 9 REB, 14 AST
Buck Williams: 23 PTS, 12 REB, 11/14 FG

***

Game 2 - #4 Boston Celtics at #3 Chicago Bulls (Bulls lead 1-0)

Another game, another 44 for Dominique. This time the Celtics had some firepower to match, only Larry Bird struggled to find the basket (8/27 FG) and it cost them. The Bulls take a comfortable 2-0 lead into Boston, where the Celtics need to find something to get back into the series.

BULLS 123, Celtics 106 (Bulls lead 2-0)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 20 PTS, 7 REB, 13 AST, 5 STL
Gus Williams: 20 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST
Purvis Short: 24 PTS, 9 REB, 5 AST

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 44 PTS, 8 REB, 4 STL, 17/26 FG, 9/10 FT
Terry Cummings: 22 PTS, 13 REB
Johnny Moore: 15 PTS, 10 AST, 6/8 FG

***

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #6 Phoenix Suns (Lakers lead 2-0)

It looks like the Suns just never had a chance. While the fight was somewhat close in the first half the Lakers pulled away with ease. For whatever reason Greg Ballard took 32 shots for Phoenix, only hitting 11. With Craig Hodges going 5/17 it was the Suns just weren’t going to get away with that against LA. King had a 28-7-7 and Magic ended up with a 19-9-9. The Lakers will look to finish off the sweep and get to their third straight NBA Finals.

Lakers 110, SUNS 99 (Lakers lead 3-0)

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 28 PTS, 7 REB, 7 AST
Magic Johnson: 19 PTS, 9 REB, 9 AST
Buck Williams: 17 PTS, 9 REB, 6/6 FG

Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 26 PTS, 5 REB, 5 AST
Greg Ballard: 27 PTS, 10 REB, 3 AST, 4 STL

Game 3 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #4 Boston Celtics (Bulls lead 2-0)

Another big game for ‘Nique, but this time the Celtics had something for Chicago as a whole. The Celtics scored 70 in the first half and while Chicago tried to hang on, they couldn’t make up the difference. The Boston Big 3 came up huge, with Purvis Short scoring 34, Bird with 26 (with 8 REB, 10 AST) and Gus had 25. No one was particularly bad for Chicago, but they’ll have to do just a bit better to take complete control in Game 4.

CELTICS 126, Bulls 112 (Bulls lead 2-1)

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 36 PTS, 4 REB, 15/27 FG
Alvan Adams: 20 PTS, 6 REB, 10/15 FG
Terry Cummings: 20 PTS, 9/13 FG

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 26 PTS, 8 REB, 10 AST, 4/7 3P
Purvis Short: 34 PTS, 4 REB, 5 STL
Gus Williams: 25 PTS, 8 AST, 7 STL

***

Game 4 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #6 Phoenix Suns (Lakers lead 3-0)

The Lakers just let this one get away. After a competitive first quarter the Lakers only managed 8 second quarter points…and basically decided they’ll wait till Game 5. Clyde led Phoenix with 22.

SUNS 117, Lakers 87 (Lakers lead 3-1)

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 26 PTS, 4 REB, 13/22 FG
Buck Williams: 19 PTS, 9/12 FG

Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 22 PTS, 3 STL, 2 BLK, 8/14 FG
Kevin Willis: 11 PTS, 10 REB
Paul Pressey: 13 PTS, 5, REB, 10 AST

***

Game 4 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #4 Boston Celtics (Bulls lead 2-1)

Dominique
continued to dominate, but the Celtics came storming back in the 4th quarter to take the lead on a Purvis Short lay-up with 1:56 left. 118-117 Celtics.

Boston does everything they can to keep the ball out of ‘Nique’s hands, and it works as Chicago settles for a Vinnie Johnson jumper that misses. Johnson makes up for this though by stripping Short. Johnson ends up having to take it himself and he’s fouled, with the lay-up just rimming out. Johnson only makes one, tying the game at 118 with 45 seconds left. Bird tries to get to the basket, but has to give it up to Short who misses a three straight away! 20 seconds left and ‘Nique has the ball. The clock ticks away and he takes the shot…AND HITS IT AS TIME EXPIRES! DOMINIQUE WON THE GAME! Boston Garden is stunned.

Bulls 120, CELTICS 118 (Bulls lead 3-1)

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 43 PTS, 6 REB, 4 STL
Vinnie Johnson: 21 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST, 4 STL, 8/14 FG, 2/3 3P

Celtics Stats
Gus Williams: 32 PTS, 15/25 FG
Larry Bird: 19 PTS, 5 REB, 5 AST
Purvis Short: 16 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST
Cedric Maxwell: 16 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST

***

Game 5 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 3-1)

The Lakers finished off the Suns in Game 5. Bernard King went for 41 and again the Suns just couldn’t do anything about it. The Suns should be proud of the season they’ve had, as they’ve positioned themselves as a contender in the West. They have an outside shot at the lottery too. The Lakers will have their hands full in the Finals regardless of their opponent. They await the Bulls-Celtics winner.

LAKERS 113, Suns 98 (Lakers win 4-1)

Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 22 PTS, 5 REB
Greg Ballard: 21 PTS, 11 REB, 2 STL

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 41 PTS, 8 REB, 2 STL, 2 BLK
Magic Johnson: 19 PTS, 8 REB, 11 AST
Buck Williams: 13 PTS, 4 STL

***

Game 5 - #4 Boston Celtics at #3 Chicago Bulls (Bulls lead 3-1)

Chicago came to win and celebrate, but instead they’ll have to pack their bags and head back to Boston. Dominique Wilkins was incredible again with 45 points, but Larry Bird played like the champion and two-time MVP he is with a 37-11-12 as he saved Boston’s season in Game 5. Boston will need to win at home to send this series to a deciding Game 7.

Celtics 135, BULLS 128 (Bulls lead 3-2)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 37 PTS, 11 REB, 12 AST, 3 STL, 14/24 FG
Gus Williams: 24 PTS, 10 AST

Bulls Stats

Dominique Wilkins: 44 PTS, 8 REB, 4 STL, 17/26 FG, 9/10 FT
Terry Cummings: 22 PTS, 13 REB
Johnny Moore: 15 PTS, 10 AST, 6/8 FG

***

Game 6 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #4 Boston Celtics (Bulls lead 3-2)

This was the definition of ‘let the guy get his points and shut down everyone else”. Dominique Wilkins went off for 50, but again it wasn’t enough as only Terry Cummings hit double digits to help him. Bird and Short had 35 each (Bird with a 35-16-9) and just like that the series goes to a Game 7.

CELTICS 120, Bulls 105 (Series tied 3-3)

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 50 PTS, 10 REB, 2 BLK
Terry Cummings: 16 PTS, 7 REB
Johnny Moore: 14 AST

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 35 PTS, 16 REB, 9 AST, 2 STL, 2 BLK, 11/16 FG
Purvis Short: 35 PTS, 8 REB
Gus Williams: 16 PTS, 12 AST

***

Game 7 - #4 Boston Celtics at #3 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 3-3)

It took 7 games, but the worst possible scenario happened for the Celtics: the Bulls figured out how to win without ‘Nique having a monster game. ‘Nique took out a page from Bird’s book with a 24-14-9 and Terry Cummings led the way for Chicago as the Bulls finished off the Celtics in Game 7 to clinch a berth in the NBA Finals. Bird was great with a 34-11-7, but his defense will be questioned as ‘Nique had his way with him for the second year in a row in a seven game series. The Bulls head to their first NBA Finals as Boston falls short for the second straight season.

BULLS 120, Celtics 111 (Bulls win 4-3)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 34 PTS, 11 REB, 7 AST, 13/25 FG
Cedric Maxwell: 22 PTS
Gus Williams: 11 PTS, 8 AST, 5 STL

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 24 PTS, 14 REB, 9 AST, 9/17 FG, 6/6 FT
Terry Cummings: 25 PTS, 5 REB, 11/15 FG
Alvan Adams: 22 PTS, 9 REB

NBA FINALS Preview

Best of Seven (2-3-2)

Series Preview
The 1985 NBA Finals are full of storylines. The top two scorers in the league: Chicago’s Dominique Wilkins (36.9) and LA’s Bernard King (32.8) will go at one another. Two young, tough power forwards in Terry Cummings and Buck Williams will collide in the paint. The biggest question for Chicago will be how Johnny Moore and company handle MVP Magic Johnson. The Nulls may have to give up some playmaking and have Andre Wakefield and Craig Ehlo harass Magic all series, but even that may not matter. But if someone can help ‘Nique put up points, the Bulls definitely have a chance this series. Also interesting is the Head Coach battle, as it was Pat Riley who replaced Paul Westhead in Los Angeles. Now Westhead has Chicago in the Finals.

(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #1 Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers were able to keep the ball out of Dominique’s hands in Game 1 and it led to a Game 1 victory. Bernard King played an excellent game on both sides, putting up a 34-9-9. The Bulls were able to keep it close as Terry Cummings and Alvan Adams cleaned up the boards and scored 53 combined points, but without the monster ‘Nique game they fell just short.

LAKERS 117, Bulls 111 (Lakers lead 1-0)

Game 2 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

This time ‘Nique tried to take over, but once again Bernard King outplayed him with a massive 44 point game of his own to give the Lakers a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Wilkins struggled from the field, scoring 26 points on 33 shots. The Bulls will hope to get their footing in Chicago, but to win the title they’ll have to win the deciding game in LA now.

Dominique Wilkins: 26 PTS, 7 REB, 6 STL

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #3 Chicago Bulls (Lakers lead 2-0)

It was a different story in Chicago. Dominique looked like Dominique as the Bulls raced to 71 1st half points and held on to get on the scoreboard. ‘Nique had 40, outscoring Bernard King for the first time in the series. Buck Williams tried to power the Lakers to a Game 3 win with 32, but only he and King got anything going. The Finals so far is missing a big Magic Johnson game. He only scored 8 with 12 assists here. ‘Nique and the Bulls look to tie in Game 4.

BULLS 120, Lakers 108 (Lakers lead 2-1)

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 25 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST
Buck Williams: 32 PTS, 10 REB, 10/22 FG

Game 4 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #3 Chicago Bulls (Lakers lead 2-1)

We finally got our classic in this NBA Finals.

With six nail-biting minutes left on the clock, the scoreboard read 107-107, with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers locked in a fierce battle for victory.

‘Nique powered through the Lakers' defense like a hot knife through butter, putting the Bulls ahead with a slick layup. However, Magic Johnson wasn't about to let that go unanswered. A no-look pass to Bernard King tied the game back up, and the tension in Chicago Stadium soared.

Undeterred, 'Nique charged at the basket like a bull in a china shop, drawing a foul from Magic himself. He managed to make one-of-two free throws, giving the Bulls a precarious one-point lead. As the clock ticked down, the Bulls' aggressive defense trapped Jamaal Wilkes, forcing Magic into a desperate, off-balance shot. The crowd roared as the Bulls capitalized on the Lakers' misstep, with Alvan Adams dishing a sweet assist to Johnny Moore. Bulls 112, Lakers 109.

Magic Johnson decided it was time to remind everyone why he’s the league MVP. With a burst of speed, he sliced through the Bulls' defense and hammered down a thunderous dunk, bringing the Lakers within a single point. Johnny Moore, though, was not about to be outdone. He responded with the biggest shot of his career, a clutch jumper that put the Bulls up 114-111.

Rodney McCray, playing valuable minutes in these NBA Finals, found King for an easy basket. But the Bulls' Alvan Adams was having none of it, scoring quickly to maintain the Bulls' three-point lead. As the Lakers' Jamaal Wilkes missed his shot, 'Nique seized the opportunity, sprinting coast-to-coast and throwing down a monstrous dunk that shook the very foundation of Chicago Stadium!

With the Bulls leading 118-115, Johnny Moore nearly came away with a steal but was called for a foul. Buck Williams managed to score for the Lakers, and the back-and-forth scoring continued. Magic orchestrated the Lakers' offense patiently, eventually finding Wilkes for a jumper that brought the game within one point.

Johnny Moore charged towards the hoop, colliding with Wilkes. The referee called a foul, but a frustrated Wilkes argued that it should've been a charge, resulting in a technical. 'Nique coolly sank the technical free throw for his 50th point. Moore made one-of-two from the line, and the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar stepped up to make a free throw for the Lakers. With only 58 seconds left, it was 120-118 Bulls.

Alvan Adams hit a dagger of a jumper, giving the Bulls a four-point lead. But in a stunning turn of events, Moore committed a terrible foul on Magic, who drained both free throws. When Wilkes repeated Moore's mistake, Moore had a chance to extend the lead, but he missed both free throws! With only 21 seconds left, the Lakers had a chance to tie or take the lead.

In a play for the ages, Magic broke Moore's ankles and threw down a vicious dunk to level the game with just 15 seconds remaining. The Bulls scrambled to get the ball to 'Nique, but it was Vinnie Johnson who found Terry Cummings. With the weight of the world on his shoulders, Cummings took a jumper from the free throw line...and it was nothing but net! The crowd erupted as the final buzzer sounded, and the Bulls emerged victorious, 124-122! The series is TIED at 2!

BULLS 124, Lakers 122 (Series tied 2-2)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 28 PTS, 11 REB, 20 AST, 3 STL, 9/17 FG
Bernard King: 40 PTS, 9 REB, 18/25 FG
Jamaal Wilkes: 18 PTS, 7 REB, 7 AST

Johnny Moore: 16 PTS, 15 AST, 4 STL

Game 5 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #3 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 2-2)

Defense was secondary in Game 5. The Bulls surprisingly featured a balanced attack, with Dominique only taking 12 shots but scoring 28 points. It wasn’t good enough as the Lakers were unstoppable, deflating Chicago Stadium and putting the Bulls title hopes in peril. Magic was amazing again with an 18-8-14, and Bernard King would not be denied, dropping 43. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar produced another clutch game in his illustrious career, scoring 23. The series returns to LA, and the Lakers only need to win one.

Lakers 141, BULLS 134 (Lakers lead 3-2)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 18 PTS, 8 REB, 14 AST
Bernard King: 43 PTS, 4 AST, 18/24 FG
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: 23 PTS, 5 REB, 8/12 FG

Bulls Stats

Game 6 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 3-2)

He will not be denied! In one of the greatest clutch performances in NBA history, Dominique Wilkins scored 48 and grabbed 15 rebounds, leading Chicago to a massive Game 6 victory in the LA Forum to force a deciding Game 7. While Magic Johnson had a triple-double (21-13-11), Johnny Moore had one too (10-10-11), somewhat offsetting Magic’s impact. Bernard King played well with 32, but it was ‘Nique’s night. Anything can happen in a Game 7. Can the Bulls take two-in-a-row on the road to win the franchise’s first title…or will the Lakers go back-to-back?

Bulls 135, LAKERS 124 (Series tied 3-3)

Game 7 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Series tied 3-3)

Dominique Wilkins
did everything he could, and arguably could have been Finals MVP, but the Los Angeles Lakers got the job done to win their eighth NBA Championship. While Wilkins had 53, his third game in the series with 48+, the Lakers countered with eight players scoring in double-digits, led by Bernard King’s 36. The Bulls hung with the Lakers every step of the way, but could never get ahead. Surprisingly, Magic Johnson was awarded the Finals MVP with averages of 17.4 PPG, 8.7 RPG and 11.7 APG. Some thought King would win it averaging 36.3 PPG for the series. Nonetheless, the Lakers are champions again.

LAKERS 141, Bulls 132 (Lakers win 4-3)

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 53 PTS, 10 REB, 22/33 FG, 7/8 FT
Vinnie Johnson: 26 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 36 PTS, 7 AST, 13/17 FG
Bill Cartwright: 20 PTS, 6 REB, 5 BLK

1985 NBA Off-Season

We’re a couple seasons away from the next major change in the NBA. For now, it’s another quiet off-season structure-wise. The salary cap rises to $7,000,000, “only” a $1,000,000 increase. It’ll rise $1,000,000 a year for the next few seasons. This will be the last season for the Clippers in San Diego as they head to Anaheim the year after. We also only have two seasons to go before the NBA expands again, this time to welcome the Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Only two coaching changes this season: Dr. Jack Ramsey retires and assistant Rick Adelman takes over in Portland, and Frank Layden was fired from the Mavericks after this season’s playoff disappointment, with former Celtics’ coach Bill Fitch taking over.

ewingdraft.jpg

The NBA Draft Lottery was next. There is one major prize in this one, Georgetown center Patrick Ewing. There are several other interesting talents in the draft such forwards Detlef Schrempf and Chris Mullin, the fiery Xavier McDaniel, big men Wayman Tinsdale, Jon Koncak, Joe Kleine and Benoit Benjamin. But clearly this year, Ewing is the prize. Portland put themselves in an excellent position to land Ewing as well. But did they?

Draft Lotto
1. Trail Blazers (From Sixers)
2. Jazz
3. Trail Blazers (From Sonics)
4. Kings
5. Bullets
6. Trail Blazers
7. Heat (From Nuggets)
8. Stallions
9. Suns (From Bucks)
10. Hawks

And here is how the Lottery played out:

#10 - Hawks
#9 – Suns
#8 – Stallions
#7 – Trail Blazers (-1)

Once again the Heat get lucky in the lottery and now have an opportunity to draft a young star next to Michael Jordan. They’re in the top 3.

#6 – Bullets (-1)
#5 – Trail Blazers (From Sonics) (-2)

Speaking of lucky, the Kings have once again locked in a top 3 spot. They were last year’s lotto winners, landing Hakeem Olajuwon.

#4 – Jazz (-2)
#3 – Trail Blazers (From Sixers) (-2)

For the second year in a row…it’s either Miami or Sacramento!

#2 – Heat (From Nuggets) (+5)

The Sacramento Kings lock in back-to-back #1 selections. With Hakeem in place, will they also take Ewing?

#1 – Kings (+3)

Draft Order

#1 – Kings – Patrick Ewing

The Kings decide that their future will be defined by two potentially generational big men as they do indeed select Patrick Ewing.

#2 – Heat – Xavier McDaniel
#3 – Trail Blazers – Chris Mullin

Unsurprisingly, with a roster full of young power forwards and centers the Trail Blazers mix it up.

#4 – Jazz – Detlef Schrempf
#5 – Trail Blazers – TRADE

Portland takes an interesting chance, sending the #5 selection to Detroit for guard Darrell Walker, center Randy Breuer and the 1987 Pistons 1st Round pick. Is that enough of a return for the #5? It’s not clear, but Walker is a 24 year old guard who played big minutes for the Pistons last season.

#5 – Pistons – Benoit Benjamin
#6 – Bullets – Wayman Tinsdale
#7 – Trail Blazers – Jon Koncak
#8 – Stallions – Joe Kleine
#9 – Suns – Charles Oakley
#10 – Hawks – Karl Malone
#11 – Spirits – Joe Dumars
#12 – Spurs – A.C. Green
#13 – Kings – Terry Porter
#14 – Heat – Hot Rod Williams
#15 – Suns – Ed Pickney
#16 - Clippers- Blair Rasmussen
#17 – Sonics – Jerry Reynolds
#18 - Warriors – Tyrone Corbin
#19 - Knicks – Michael Adams
#20 - Cavs – Gerald Wilkins
#21 - Celtics – Sam Vincent
#22 - Sonics – Bill Wennington
#23 - Nets – Terry Catledge
#24 - Bulls – Keith Lee
#25 - Rockets – Bobby Lee Hurt
#26 - TRADE

A blockbuster trade here as the Lakers trade for Robert Parish of the 76ers. The Sixers get an excellent haul for Parish, getting back this #26 selection, Bill Cartwright, Rodney McCray, Manute Bol and the Lakers 1986 1st Round selection.

#26 – 76ers – Sam Mitchell

Free Agency

These contracts just keep getting bigger and bigger. There were a few that impacted contending teams that should make a huge impact to the NBA landscape for 85-86. The Celtics were big winners in free agency, prying away Larry Nance from the Clippers and bringing back Purvis Short. Two-time defending NBA Champions Lakers took two expected hits, losing Buck Williams to the Spirits and Jamaal Wilkes to the Jazz. The Cavs also had a big off-season, bringing back Rolando Blackman and finally plugging in a big hole at the power forward spot by signing Orlando Woolridge. Here is a list of notable contracts signed this off-season, with players who switched teams in italics.

Eddie Johnson to Bullets for 7 Years, $17,762,500
Rolando Blackman to Cavs for 7 Years, $17,762,500
Larry Nance to Celtics for 6 Years, $11,250,000
Purvis Short to Celtics for 5 Years, $10,336,300
Mark Aguirre to Hawks for 7 Years, $17,762,500
Gerald Henderson to Mavericks for 4 Years, $3,011,998
Buck Williams to Spirits for 6 Years, $13,781,250
Jamaal Wilkes to Jazz for 3 Years, $3,000,000

Isiah Thomas to Mavericks for 7 Years, $17,762,500
Otis Birdsong to Clippers for 5 Years, $7,169,750
Danny Schayes to Warriors for 4 Years, $3,140,529

Tom Chambers to Pistons for 7 Years, $14,210,000
Kelly Tripucka to Rockets for 6 Years, $14,447,500
Orlando Woolridge to Cavs for 5 Years, $6,250,000

1985-1986 Season Preview

1985-1986 Team Information

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

Baltimore Bullets

1985 Record: 27-55 (5th in Atlantic, Missed Playoffs)
Head Coach: Mike Fratello (3rd Year)
Key Players: Johnny Davis (16.4 PPG, 6 APG, 1.5 SPG), John Lucas (14.1 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.9 SPG), Eddie Johnson (19.7 PPG, 6.1 RPG), Sam Bowie (9.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.9 BPG), Wayman Tinsdale (#6 Overall Pick)

There’s some talent here in Baltimore, so don’t be surprised to see some improvement. The Bullets also have a decent bench with Sonny Parker and Bill Walton.

Boston Celtics
1985 Record: 52-30 (2nd in Atlantic, Lost to Bulls in ECF)
Head Coach: K.C. Jones (5th Year)
Key Players: Larry Bird (28.1 PPG, 11 RPG, 8.1 APG, 1.9 SPG, 48.3% FG, 91.8% FT), Larry Nance (17.7 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 2.5 BPG, 48.8% FG), Purvis Short (23.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 49.4% FG), Gus Williams (17.2 PPG, 5.9 APG, 2.3 SPG)

For the second straight year the Bulls took out Boston in seven and it was clear that while Larry Bird can do all the dirty work, having him do all that while running the offense isn’t necessarily the way back to the NBA Finals. The Celtics hit big though in free agency, luring Larry Nance from the Clippers. Suddenly, it looks like the East runs through Boston again.

Miami Heat
1985 Record: 45-37 (4th in Atlantic, Lost to Bulls in ECSF)
Head Coach: Chuck Daly (6th Year)
Key Players: Michael Jordan (29.6 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 5.9 APG, 2.1 SPG, 54.1% FG), Derek Harper (12.3 PPG, 5 APG, 1.1 SPG), Xavier McDaniel (#2 Overall Pick), Sam Perkins (13.3 PPG, 7.5 RPG)

It’s Michael Jordan time! While expectations for the Heat aren’t massive, the idea they could get to the Finals gains traction just because of Jordan. The Heat are a little undersized though, we’ll see if that hurts them during the season. While McDaniel should be a tough presence for Miami and a good rebounder, we’ll see if he can bang players bigger than him for an 82 game season.

New Jersey Nets
1985 Record: 55-27 (1st in Atlantic, lost to Heat in Round 1)
Head Coach: Phil Jackson (4th Year)
Key Players: Moses Malone (13.9 PPG, 12.3 RPG, 1.3 BPG), Cliff Robinson (19.1 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 1.3 BPG), Calvin Natt (17 PPG, 5.6 RPG), Sidney Moncrief (22.3 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 4.1 APG, 2.7 SPG, 51.5% FG, 82.2% FT)

When Moses Malone returned from injury late last season, the Nets suddenly looked like the team to beat. A late season run nabbed them a second straight Atlantic Division crown…but also resulted in a match against Michael Jordan. The Nets have the talent to make a title run and if they can stay healthy can still hold off Boston for the Atlantic.

New York Knicks
1985 Record: 51-31 (3rd in Atlantic, Lost to Celtics in Round 1)
Head Coach: Jerry Sloan (4th Year)
Key Players: Micheal Ray Richardson (24.9 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 12.1 APG, 3.3 SPG), David Thompson (13 G, 21 PPG), Mark Eaton (5.4 BPG)

The Knicks are a big wildcard this season. Their title chances come down to one question: is David Thompson able to return to his pre-injury form? If so, they might be the East favorite. If not, they’re an outside contender. Obviously they can’t be counted out with Micheal Ray’s all-around play the monster in the middle, Mark Eaton.

Philadelphia 76ers
1985 Record: 16-66 (6th in Atlantic, Missed Playoffs)
Head Coach: Matt Guokas (2nd Year)
Key Players: Julius Erving (16.6 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.5 SPG), Maurice Cheeks (14.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 6.7 APG, 2.0 SPG), Greg Ballard (14.9 PPG, 7.2 RPG)

The bottom fell out on the Sixers last season. This led to the start of a rebuilding phase…sort of. Dr. J and Maurice Cheeks remain, but the Sixers also will be starting the 7’7” Manute Bol and 24 year old forward Rodney McCray. McCray was a solid bench piece for the champion Lakers while Bol has sat behind Bill Cartwright (also on this team) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Philly will see what they’ve got.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Atlanta Hawks

1985 Record: 39-43 (5th in Central, Missed Playoffs)
Head Coach: Phil Johnson (3rd Year)
Key Players: Bill Laimbeer (15.9 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 1.6 BPG), Karl Malone (#10 Overall Pick), Mark Aguirre (18.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 49.8% FG)

Atlanta took a gamble last season in trading for Mark Aguirre, but it did not help their playoff hopes as Atlanta just missed. The Hawks decided to commit to Aguirre, while also drafting powerful forward Karl Malone. Should be an interesting year in Atlanta.

Chicago Bulls
1985 Record: 60-22 (2nd in Central, Lost to Lakers in NBA Finals)
Head Coach: Paul Westhead (4th Year)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (36.7 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.8 SPG, 54.1% FG, 82.3% FT), Terry Cummings (17.1 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 49.7% FG), Vinnie Johnson (13.9 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.7 SPG), Johnny Moore (11.3 PPG, 9.2 APG, 2.3 SPG)

The unstoppable Dominique Wilkins nearly powered the Bulls to the NBA Title, falling just short against Magic and the Lakers. ‘Nique averaged an insane 36.7 points per game and there’s no reason to think he won’t have a repeat performance. This time, Chicago hopes it ends with a ring.

Cleveland Cavaliers
1985 Record: 51-31 (3rd in Central, Lost to Bulls in Round 1)
Head Coach: Stan Albeck (7th Year)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (25.9 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 2.7 BPG, 56.7% FG), Rolando Blackman (23.3 PPG, 5.5 RPG), Orlando Woolridge (14.2 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1 BPG, 56.1% FG), Jim Paxson (14.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 2 SPG)

Cleveland again had a strong regular season that resulted in a tough Round 1 loss, this time to the Bulls. There’s cause for excitement for Cleveland though. Not only are Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman locked up for the next 2/3rds of the decade, but they plugged in the power forward hole with Warriors’ scorer Orlando Woolridge, a massive upgrade.

Detroit Pistons
1985 Record: 61-21 (1st in Central, Lost to Celtics in ECSF)
Head Coach: Lenny Wilkens (2nd Year)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (29 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 51.9% FG), Benoit Benjamin (#5 Overall Pick), Michael Cooper (14.4 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.4 APG, 2.4 SPG, 1.2 BPG), Dennis Johnson (19.5 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.2 APG, 2.3 SPG), Fat Lever (11.8 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 8.8 APG, 1.8 SPG)

The Pistons looked headed to title town before running into Larry Bird. Still, there was a lot of positives to hand around in Lenny Wilkens first season in Detroit. Tom Chambers became one of the best scorers in the league and the Pistons locked up a Central Division title behind a 61-win season. The East looks stacked again, but so do the Pistons. They did lose Danny Schayes to Golden State, but we’ll see what rookie Benoit Benjamin can do to plug that gap.

Indiana Pacers
1985 Record: 41-41 (4th in Central, Lost to Pistons in Round 1)
Head Coach: Don Nelson (5th Year)
Key Players: Alex English (25.8 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.1 SPG), James Edwards (13 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.4 BPG)

Things don’t look good for Indiana. Otis Birdsong signed with the Clippers, and the firepower for the Pacers just isn’t there anymore. The door is closed.

Milwaukee Bucks
1985 Record: 37-45 (6th in Central)
Head Coach: Bill Musselman (6th Year)
Key Players: Marques Johnson (21.3 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.2 SPG), Walter Davis (15.9 PPG, 5 RPG, 4.4 APG)

Once Sidney Moncrief left, the door was slammed shut for the Bucks as well.

New Orleans Jazz
1985 Record: 17-65 (7th in Central)
Head Coach: Dick Motta (3rd Year)
Key Players: Charles Barkley (14.4 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.3 SPG), Detlef Schrempf (#4 Overall Pick), Jeff Malone (15.1 PPG)

We’ll see if the Jazz can progress to being a playoff contender. It’ll require a big second year for Barkley and improvement from Jeff Malone. They added Jamaal Wilkes from the Lakers, we’ll see if he can add a scoring punch.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks

1985 Record: 55-27 (1st in Midwest, Lost to Suns in WCSF)
Head Coach: Bill Fitch (1st Year)
Key Players: Ralph Sampson (22.2 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 1.7 BPG, 51.4% FG), James Worthy (22 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.2 BPG), Gerald Henderson (17.9 PPG, 1.7 SPG), Isiah Thomas (25.5 PPG, 11.7 APG, 2.5 SPG, 49.5% FG)

Losing Isiah Thomas to injury cost Dallas any shot at the NBA Finals last year. Some changes were made. First, Dallas signed away Gerald Henderson, a playoff proven scorer who can play the point guard position if needed. They also made a coaching change to Bill Fitch, who had the Celtics on the cusp a few seasons ago. They might be the favorite.

Denver Nuggets
1985 Record: 28-54 (6th in Midwest, Missed Playoffs)
Head Coach: Jack McKinney (4th Year)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (19 PPG, 9.4 RPG), John Drew (16.7 PPG, 7 RPG, 1.4 SPG)

Sure, Denver improved, but likely not as much as they would have liked. The Nuggets’ future is unclear, but at least they have their 1st round pick this year.

Houston Rockets
1985 Record: 47-35 (2nd in Central, Lost to Suns in Round 1)
Head Coach: Jim Lynam (3rd Year)
Key Players: Jack Sikma (18.1 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.4 BPG), LaSalle Thompson (7.5 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 1.7 BPG, 49.8% FG), Kelly Tripucka (25.9 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.3 SPG, 49.7% FG), Ricky Pierce (19.6 PPG), Darrell Griffth (18.1 PPG, 1.6 SPG)

The Rockets are a tough one to figure out. They went on an absolute tear at the end of the regular season and locked up the #3 seed…just to get swept by the Phoenix Suns. The talent is there, can the Rockets get back to winning?

Salt Lake Stallions
1985 Record: 34-48 (5th in Midwest, Missed Playoffs)
Head Coach: John MacLeod (4th Year)
Key Players: Reggie Theus (19.6 PPG, 4 RPG, 5.5 APG, 51.1% FG, 83.2% FT), Adrian Dantley (28.7 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 56.1% FG)

Just how far can a scoring duo of Adrian Dantley and Reggie Theus go? Interestingly, a defensive front court of Tree Rollins and Herb Williams will accompany them in the starting lineup as opposed to scorer Dan Roundfield.

San Antonio Spurs
1985 Record: 39-43 (3rd in Midwest, Lost to Mavericks in Round 1)
Head Coach: Johnny Bach (2nd Year)
Key Players: George Gervin (19.8 PPG, 5.6 RPG), Brad Davis (18.1 PPG, 1.7 SPG)

The door is closed for the Spurs. The next few years might just be seeing if the Iceman can reach 30K points as they rebuild. He’s at 26,520.

Spirits of St. Louis
1985 Record: 36-46 (4th in Midwest, Lost to Lakers in Round 1)
Head Coach: Donnie Walsh (3rd Year)
Key Players: Buck Williams (17 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 59.1% FG), Dale Ellis (24.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG), Alvin Robertson (17 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 6.1 APG, 1.9 SPG)

A surprising playoff appearance was an exciting moment for St. Louis. They may build on it too as Buck Williams, clearly looking for a bigger role, left the Lakers and joined the Spirits. Buck, Ellis and Robertson is an intriguing trio.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Golden State Warriors

1985 Record: 47-35 (2nd in the Pacific, Lost to Lakers in WCSF)
Head Coach: George Karl (3rd Year)
Key Players: Darryl Dawkins (15.8 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 1.8 BPG, 53.4% FG), Danny Schayes (10.6 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.5 BPG), Kiki Vandeweghe (16.6 PPG, 4.3 RPG), John Stockton (11.4 PPG, 5.9 APG, 1.6 SPG), Andrew Toney (17.8 PPG, 48.2% FG)

A second straight loss to the Lakers in the Semis isn’t the worst result for the Warriors, but expectations are rising. It’s worth noting the Warriors don’t have a player over 29 years old.

Los Angeles Lakers
1985 Record: 64-18 (1st in Pacific, Won NBA Finals)
Head Coach: Pat Riley (5th Year)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (21.9 PPG, 10 RPG, 14.3 APG, 1.8 SPG, 53.7% FG, 85.8% FT), Robert Parish (16.5 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 2 BPG), Bernard King (32.8 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 59.9% FG)

The Lakers lost two major parts of the championship core with Buck Williams leaving for St. Louis and Jamaal Wilkes leaving for New Orleans. The Lakers decided to take a huge risk, giving up more of their depth to land Robert Parish. Parish and Kareem are expected to start together with King and MVP Magic, but is it enough for the three-peat?

Phoenix Suns
1985 Record: 45-37 (4th in Pacific, Lost to Lakers in WCF)
Head Coach: Larry Brown (4th Year)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (24 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.6 SPG, 49% FG), Kevin Willis (11.5 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 50.7% FG), Charles Oakley (#9 overall Pick), Craig Hodges (15.2 PPG, 40% 3P)

Clyde Drexler made the leap and the Suns made one heck of a run to the Western Conference Finals. Phoenix would sweep the first two rounds of the playoffs before running into the Lakers. Can the Suns take the next step?

Portland Trail Blazers
1985 Record: 28-54 (5th in Pacific, Missed Playoffs)
Head Coach: Rick Adelman (1st Year)
Key Players: Otis Thorpe (16.1 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 53.8% FG), Michael Cage (12.4 PPG, 9.5 RPG), Oscar Schmidt (14.5 PPG, 4.6 RPG), Chris Mullin (#3 Overall Pick), Byron Scott (19.5 PPG, 4 RPG, 4.3 APG), Jon Koncak (#7 overall Pick)

Sure, they didn’t land Ewing, but really this is the one team that maybe didn’t NEED to as their front court is already stacked as it is. Chris Mullin will be somewhat misplaced at the shooting guard position as Oscar Schmidt is at the small forward spot, but the mismatch might go both ways.

Sacramento Kings
1985 Record: 26-56 (6th in Pacific)
Head Coach: Del Harris (2nd Year)
Key Players: Hakeem Olajuwon (21.5 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 3.1 BPG), Patrick Ewing (#1 Overall Pick)

For the rest of the league’s sake, they better hope Ewing is a bust. We already know Hakeem isn’t.

San Diego Clippers
1985 Record: 45-37 (3rd in Pacific, Lost to Warriors in Round 1)
Head Coach: Don Chaney (2nd Year)
Key Players: Jawann Oldham (11 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 1.8 BPG, 50.8% FG), Otis Birdsong (20.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 4.7 APG), Doc Rivers (15.5 PPG, 7.9 APG)

In their last season in San Diego, the Clippers will be without Larry Nance…but they added Otis Birdsong. What does that mean for the season? Unclear really, but probably not good.

Seattle Supersonics
1985 Record: 20-62 (7th in Pacific, Missed Playoffs)
Head Coach: Hubie Brown (2nd Year)
Key Players: Steve Stipanovich (11.6 PPG, 8.3 RPG), Ray Williams (12.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 4.8 APG)

This will be another bad one for Seattle. They do have three 1st round picks coming up…although none of them is their own.

***

Brand new REGULAR SEASON FANTASY CONTEST! Very simple.

Pick six players. One must be a rookie. Your team may not share more than three players with any other team (so, first come, first serve, but this is so someone can’t hog say, Magic or Bird for themselves).

Example

Team A picks: Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Kevin McHale, Dominique Wilkins and Patrick Ewing

Team B picks: Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Ralph Sampson, David Thompson, Isiah Thomas, Patrick Ewing

Team C picks: Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Rolando Blackman, Benoit Benjamin

Team A shares only three players with Team B (Magic, Bird, Ewing) and Team C (Magic, Bird, Jordan). Team B shares only two with Team C (Magic, Bird). So all teams are legal. Again, it’s first come first serve.

1 Fantasy Point is Worth the Following (Each Stat is separate)

100 Points
50 Rebounds
25 Assists
10 Steals
10 Blocks

This is a full regular-season, roto style contest. Your six players will be added up and the winner will be who has the most total points (fractional points will be part of it).

10% Bonus to the winner as this will be added to your running totals.

1984-1985 Fantasy Stat Results

Past Prediction Results

@Dubble J : 1,450 Points (4x Playoff Champion: 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985)
1981 Playoffs: 302 (Champion)

Through X-Mas 1985 (85-86 Season)

1985-1986 Team Information

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

Miami Heat (2)

1985-1986 Record: 19-7
Key Players: Michael Jordan (32.7 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 7.5 APG, 2.4 SPG, 56.7% FG), Sam Perkins (16.1 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 48.1% FG), Xavier McDaniel (14.5 PPG, 7 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 49.4% FG)
Big Moves: None

It’s only his second year, but Michael Jordan already has a claim to the best all-around player in basketball. Flanked by Sam Perkins and Xavier McDaniel, MJ has the Heat rolling.

New Jersey Nets (4)
1985-1986 Record: 20-8
Key Players: Sidney Moncrief (19.2 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 5.3 APG, 2.6 SPG), Calvin Natt (19.8 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 48.3% FG), Cliff Robinson (17.6 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 1.5 BPG), Moses Malone (12 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1.2 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Nets again are winning games based off their elite defense, but there still has to be concern that Moses Malone just isn’t who he once was. With that being said the Nets have dominated in New Jersey this season with an 11-1 record. If they can get the #1 seed, they may be unbeatable in the playoffs.

Boston Celtics (5)
1985-1986 Record: 18-11
Key Players: Larry Bird (30.6 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 6.6 APG, 1.8 SPG, 49.6% FG, 93.5% FT), Larry Nance (14 G, 16.9 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.9 BPG, 48.7% FG), Purvis Short (17.7 PPG, 6.8 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Injuries have slowed down the Celtics early on. Larry Bird has carried Boston so far anyway. Gus Williams is showing signs of decline, Purvis Short’s %s have plummeted and Larry Nance only played half the stretch. Still, the Celtics will be a threat as long as Bird is healthy.

Baltimore Bullets
1985-1986 Record: 11-17
Key Players: Sam Bowie (14.2 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 2.4 BPG, 48.2% FG), Eddie Johnson (18.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG)
Big Moves: None

A really good sign for Baltimore: Sam Bowie has taken a jump and looks like a future star.

New York Knicks
1985-1986 Record: 10-18
Key Players: Micheal Ray Richardson: (21.6 PPG, 10.7 RPG, 9.7 APG, 1.3 SPG, 48.4% FG), David Thompson (19.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG), Mark Eaton (9 RPG, 3.4 BPG), Antonie Carr (16.5 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 50.3% FG)
Big Moves: None

Horrible news for the Knicks everywhere. Micheal Ray Richardson is out for the next month-and-a-half with a concussion. David Thompson looks like a shell og himself, shooting only 39% FG, and they’re missing the production Gerald Henderson gave them last year.

Philadelphia 76ers
1985-1986 Record: 3-24
Key Players: Manute Bol (4.3 BPG), Maurice Cheeks (13.8 PPG, 5.7 APG, 1.6 SPG), Julius Erving (13.1 PPG, 4.1 RPG)

Rebuilding in Philadelphia ain’t easy. Two seasons remain on Dr. J’s contract, and he’s been awful.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Detroit Pistons (1)

1985-1986 Record: 22-7
Key Players: Tom Chambers (32.9 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 48.6% FG), Michael Cooper (13.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 4.4 APG, 2.5 SPG, 1.3 BPG), Fat Lever (12 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 9.9 APG, 2.1 SPG), Dennis Johnson (15.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.9 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Tom Chambers is flirting with the MVP as Detroit paces the East. Fat Lever is one of the best playmakers in the league, and Michael Cooper and Dennis Johnson continue to provide elite wing defense. This will be a very tough team to beat.

Cleveland Cavaliers (3)
1985-1986 Record: 21-7
Key Players: Kevin McHale (23.3 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 3.4 BPG), Orlando Woolridge (21.3 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 56.3% FG), Rolando Blackman (20.5 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 3.9 APG), Jim Paxson (14.6 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Orlando Woolridge has provided a third great scoring option for the Cavs and Kevin McHale has become perhaps the best defensive player in the league. The Cavs are looking to get by Round 1 and it’s looking quite good.

Chicago Bulls (6)
1985-1986 Record: 17-12
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (34.3 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 52.9% FG), Terry Cummings (18.4 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG), Vinnie Johnson (12.6 PPG, 5 RPG, 1.9 SPG), Johnny Moore (10 PPG, 9.2 APG, 2.0 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Dominique Wilkins has followed up his transcendent 1985 with an excellent 1986, but his teammates around him have taken a bit of a step back. As a result, the Bulls, instead of dominating the East, are in the middle of the playoff pack. Obviously with ‘Nique they can’t be counted out though.

Atlanta Hawks (7)
1985-1986 Record: 15-14
Key Players: Bill Laimbeer (16.8 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 1.8 BPG), Karl Malone (15.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.3 SPG), Mark Aguirre (14 G, 14.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG)
Big Moves: None

A leg injury has hampered Mark Aguirre, but the Hawks have still played well enough to be in the playoff hunt. They likely need a #1 guy to really get to the next level though, and it’s not looking like it’s Aguirre. Maybe Malone?

Indiana Pacers (8)
1985-1986 Record: 13-16
Key Players: Alex English (21.5 PPG, 7.1 RPG), Billy Knight (13.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG), James Edwards (13.6 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 1.5 BPG), James Bailey (13.5 PPG, 9.1 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Indiana is hanging in there, but the clock seems to be ticking. Alex English has lost a step as well.

Milwaukee Bucks
1985-1986 Record: 11-19
Key Players: Marques Johnson (17.3 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.4 SPG), Walter Davis (15.7 PPG, 4 RPG), Freeman Williams (14.8 PPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bucks never recovered from losing Sidney Moncrief in free agency a few years ago. They’ll look to hit in the lottery.

New Orleans Jazz
1985-1986 Record: 9-18
Key Players: Charles Barkley (17.5 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 49.5% FG), Jeff Malone (16.1 PPG), Detlef Schrempf (15.7 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 49% FG)
Big Moves: None

Good signs for the Jazz: Charles Barkley is looking good in year 2 and Detlef Schrempf looks to be a future star. Jeff Malone is struggling to score efficiently though, and in year 3 that feels like a problem.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Salt Lake Stallions (2)

1985-1986 Record: 17-11
Key Players: Adrian Dantley (29 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 4 APG, 1.1 SPG), Reggie Theus (20.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 5.5 APG, 1.5 SPG, 51.6% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Stallions have surprised with a strong start to the season behind solid defense and Adrian Dantley’s scoring punch. It may be fool’s gold though, as they’ve played 20 home games (14-6) against 9 road games (3-5).

Dallas Mavericks (3)
1985-1986 Record: 16-11
Key Players: James Worthy (21.8 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.5 BPG, 50.1% FG), Isiah Thomas (19.9 PPG, 10.6 APG, 2.3 SPG, 48.5% FG), Ralph Sampson (19.6 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 1.9 BPG, 51.5% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Mavericks are in the opposite situation that the Stallions are in, as they’ve only played 10 home games against 17 road games. They have a winning record in both though. It shouldn’t be a surprise if they end up winning a third consecutive Midwest Division.

San Antonio Spurs (7)
1985-1986 Record: 13-13
Key Players: George Gervin (16.8 PPG, 6 RPG), Brad Davis (17.4 PPG, 7.5 APG)
Big Moves: None

Hey, the fact that this team is still playing .500 ball and may sneak into the playoffs again is impressive. Clock is definitely ticking here.

Houston Rockets
1985-1986 Record: 11-15
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (22.1 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 4 APG, 1.5 SPG, 48.6% FG), Ricky Pierce (21.6 PPG, 4.7 RPG), Darrell Griffith (17.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 2 SPG), Jack Sikma (15.2 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.1 BPG)
Big Moves: None

Who knows how to fix this team. A lowlight came early when LA’s Bernard King dropped 70 on them. The pieces are all here, they just don’t work well with one another.

Spirits of St. Louis
1985-1986 Record: 9-16
Key Players: Dale Ellis (15 G, 20.1 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 48.3% FG), Alvin Robertson (17.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 5.7 APG, 1.8 SPG), Buck Williams (16.2 PPG, 9 RPG)
Big Moves: None

What a wild season. The Spirits lost Dale Ellis early and just lost game after game…but then Ellis returned and the Spirits went 7-2, finishing through Christmas on a 6 game winning streak. Definitely a candidate to make their way into the playoffs.

Denver Nuggets
1985-1986 Record: 6-20
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (16.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG), John Drew (15.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG)
Big Moves: None

They can’t score and they can’t defend. It’s probably going to be a while to straighten things out in Denver.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Sacramento Kings (1)

1985-1986 Record: 23-5
Key Players: Hakeem Olajuwon (18.6 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 2.4 SPG, 3.2 BPG, 58% FG), Patrick Ewing (20.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 2.1 BPG, 49.7% FG), Terry Porter (14.9 PPG, 8.2 APG, 50% FG, 81.7% FT, 37.8% 3P)
Big Moves: None

The Hakeem-Ewing combo has been nothing but a success so far, but rookie Terry Porter has also been excellent. Teams have struggled to score against Hakeem and Ewing. Porter and FA signing Danny Ainge have provided a playmaking punch as well.

Golden State Warriors (4)
1985-1986 Record: 16-13
Key Players: Kiki Vandeweghe (25.8 PPG, 5 RPG, 48.5% FG, 82.1% FT), Andrew Toney (22.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.3 SPG), Darryl Dawkins (15.3 PPG, 11 RPG, 3 APG, 1.4 BPG, 52% FG), John Stockton (15.3 PPG, 9.9 APG, 2.2 SPG, 50.2% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Warriors statistically look fun offensively, but they are struggling defensively. Still, with Kiki and Toney returning to elite form…likely due to John Stockton’s playmaking, they may be able to outscore anyone.

San Diego Clippers (5)
1985-1986 Record: 14-13
Key Players: Otis Birdsong (29.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 4.5 APG, 2.3 SPG), Wayne Cooper (15 PPG, 12.5 RPG, 2.9 BPG), Doc Rivers (16.8 PPG, 8.2 APG)
Big Moves: None

The Clippers have been powered by the surprise return to prominence by Otis Birdsong. Birdsong has shown to be unstoppable so far this season. Is that enough to carry the Clippers past Round 1?

Los Angeles Lakers (6)
1985-1986 Record: 15-15
Key Players: Magic Johnson (25.3 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 10.2 APG, 1.9 SPG, 51.9% FG), Bernard King (3 G, 45.3 PPG, 7.7 RPG), Robert Parish (20.4 PPG, 7.5 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Can’t really judge the Lakers here. Bernard King went down in three games (not before dropping 70 on the Rockets though) and Robert Parish missed 10 as well. Magic carried what was left to decent basketball and has salvaged the Lakers’ season. King should be back in January, Parish as returned. We’ll see what the Lakers are made of then.

Phoenix Suns (8)
1985-1986 Record: 12-15
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (24.9 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 4.4 APG), Mike Woodson (15.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.5 SPG), Kevin Willis (8 G, 12.3 PPG, 7.9 RPG), Charles Oakley (9 PPG, 9 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Suns looked like the next big thing in the West, but they’ve stuttered out of the gate. An injury to Kevin Willis slowed them down for sure. We’ll see how they recover.

Portland Trail Blazers
1985-1986 Record: 12-15
Key Players: Chris Mullin (19.1 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.9 SPG, 47% FG, 42.7% 3P), Byron Scott (15.7 PPG, 4 RPG, 4.5 APG, 1.8 SPG), Oscar Schmidt (14.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG), Otis Thorpe (13.6 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 56.5% FG)
Big Moves: None

The youngsters are coming together and it’s working for Portland. Blazer fans may have been disappointed to not get Ewing, but Chris Mullin has been great so far and may even take Rookie of the Year.

Seattle Supersonics
1985-1986 Record: 8-21
Key Players: Ray Williams (14.1 PPG, 6 APG, 1.6 SPG), Steve Stipanovich (12.5 PPG, 8.6 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Sonics are playing better than expected, and since they don’t have their own first round pick…why not?

Through All-Star Weekend (85-86 Season)

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

New Jersey Nets (2)

1985-1986 Record: 35-15 (20-8, 15-7)
Key Players: Sidney Moncrief (19.9 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 5.3 APG, 2.9 SPG), Calvin Natt (17.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 49.2% FG), Cliff Robinson (17.8 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.3 BPG), Moses Malone (13.5 PPG, 10.8 RPG, 1.1 BPG)
Big Moves: None

It’s looking like another really strong regular season for the Nets. Real question is can they punch it in come playoff time?

Boston Celtics (5)
1985-1986 Record: 34-17 (18-11, 16-6)
Key Players: Larry Bird (31.1 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.6 SPG, 51.2% FG, 93.2% FT, 35.1% 3P), Larry Nance (16.9 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 1.7 BPG, 48.7% FG), Purvis Short (17.8 PPG, 6.3 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Larry Nance has returned and Larry Bird is hunting his third MVP. The East is tough for sure, but the Celtics are right behind the Nets for the Atlantic.

Miami Heat (6)
1985-1986 Record: 29-19 (19-7, 10-12)
Key Players: Michael Jordan (32 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 6.8 APG, 2.3 SPG, 56.2% FG), Sam Perkins (15.8 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 1.1 BPG), Xavier McDaniel (13.8 PPG, 7.3 RPG)
Big Moves: None

It’s only his second year, but Michael Jordan already has a claim to the best all-around player in basketball. Flanked by Sam Perkins and Xavier McDaniel, MJ has the Heat rolling.

Baltimore Bullets (8)
1985-1986 Record: 23-26 (11-17, 12-9)
Key Players: Alex English (21.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.1 SPG), Sam Bowie (13.8 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 2.5 BPG), Eddie Johnson (18.4 PPG, 7 RPG)
Big Moves: Traded World B. Free, John Lucas and a 1988 1st Round Draft Pick for Alex English and Terry Furlow

The Bullets made a win-now move, trading for Alex English. Will that be enough to make a run in the East?

New York Knicks
1985-1986 Record: 14-35 (10-18, 4-17)
Key Players: Micheal Ray Richardson: (23 G, 21.6 PPG, 10.7 RPG, 9.7 APG, 1.3 SPG, 48.4% FG), David Thompson (20.3 PPG, 5.6 RPG), Antonie Carr (16.3 PPG, 5 RPG, 49.5% FG)
Big Moves: Traded away Mark Eaton for Artis Gilmore and a 1988 1st Round Pick

It looks over for this Knicks’ run. Micheal Ray Richardson is due to return, so maybe they have a crazy run in them to make a run at the #8 seed, but it’s unlikely. The Knicks basically gave up when they sent Mark Eaton to St. Louis.

Philadelphia 76ers
1985-1986 Record: 13-34 (3-24, 10-10)
Key Players: Manute Bol (4.9 BPG), Maurice Cheeks (15.2 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 5.7 APG, 1.6 SPG)

A surprisingly decent run for the Sixers leading up to the All-Star Break, but that just pushes them from embarrassing to just plain bad.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Cleveland Cavaliers (1)

1985-1986 Record: 37-13 (21-7, 16-6)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (23.6 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 1.6 SPG, 3.3 BPG), Orlando Woolridge (19.6 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.3 BPG), Rolando Blackman (20.3 PPG, 6.5 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Kevin McHale has the Cavaliers rolling once again. Orlando Woolridge has proven to be the free agent signing of the season, as he was awarded an All-Star berth for his play.

Detroit Pistons (3)
1985-1986 Record: 34-15 (22-7, 12-8)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (33.8 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 48.2% FG) Michael Cooper (15.2 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 4.5 APG, 2.4 SPG, 12 BPG), Fat Lever (11.9 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 10 APG, 1.9 SPG), Dennis Johnson (32 G, 15.1 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.8 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Detroit took a little bit of a hit as Dennis Johnson recovers from a ligament injury. DJ will be back soon as the Pistons chase the Cavs and battle the Bulls for the Central Division.

Chicago Bulls (4)
1985-1986 Record: 34-15 (17-12, 17-3)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (33.1 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 54.2% FG), Terry Cummings (19.6 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.3 SPG), Vinnie Johnson (13.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.6 SPG), Johnny Moore (9.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 8.9 APG, 2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bulls were the team to beat as the calendar turned to 1986. ‘Nique is still killing it, but Terry Cummings has stepped up his game and given the Bulls multiple ways to beat teams.

Atlanta Hawks (7)
1985-1986 Record: 25-22 (15-14, 10-8)
Key Players: Bill Laimbeer (16.9 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 1.8 BPG), Karl Malone (15.5 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 52.3% FG), Mark Aguirre (22 G, 13.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Hawks continue to hang around. Good news is that Karl Malone looks like a keeper so far.

New Orleans Jazz
1985-1986 Record: 20-29 (9-18, 11-11)
Key Players: Charles Barkley (16.4 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 49.4% FG), Jeff Malone (16.3 PPG), Detlef Schrempf (15.1 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 49.1% FG)
Big Moves: None

While it’s not a winning season, this is excellent progress for the Jazz. They hit 20 wins for the first time in franchise history and it’s only the All-Star Break.

Indiana Pacers
1985-1986 Record: 16-33 (13-16, 3-17)
Key Players: James Edwards (14.3 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.3 BPG), James Bailey (14.1 PPG, 8.2 RPG)
Big Moves: Traded Alex English and Terry Furlow for World B. Free, John Lucas and a 1988 1st Round Draft Pick

With Alex English gone, the Pacers have went full rebuild.

Milwaukee Bucks
1985-1986 Record: 15-37 (11-19, 4-18)
Key Players: Marques Johnson (17.0 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.4 SPG), Walter Davis (14.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 4.2 APG)
Big Moves: None

The Bucks never recovered from losing Sidney Moncrief in free agency a few years ago. They’ll look to hit in the lottery.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks (1)

1985-1986 Record: 34-13 (16-11, 18-2)
Key Players: James Worthy (21.4 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 1.3 BPG, 53.2% FG), Isiah Thomas (19.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 12.2 APG, 2.5 SPG, 49.9% FG), Ralph Sampson (20.4 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 2 BPG, 52.2% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Mavericks simply looked awesome at the turn of the year. If they can stay healthy, it looks good that the Laker reign at the top of the West will end.

Salt Lake Stallions (6)
1985-1986 Record: 25-25 (17-11, 8-14)
Key Players: Adrian Dantley (28.1 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.1 SPG) Reggie Theus (20.0 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 5.4 APG, 1.7 SPG, 49.6% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Stallions fell off a bit, but the weakness of the Midwest has them still has the second best team there. They’ll need to finish on the positive side of .500 if they want to return to the playoffs.

Spirits of St. Louis (7)
1985-1986 Record: 23-24 (9-16, 14-8)
Key Players: Dale Ellis (22 PPG, 6 RPG, 36.8% 3P), Alvin Robertson (17.6 PPG, 7 RPG, 6.3 APG, 1.9 SPG), Buck Williams (19 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 55.3% FG), Mark Eaton (9.9 RPG, 3.6 BPG)
Big Moves: None

What a season for the Spirits. This was a team that started 1-14, mostly because of an injury to Dale Ellis. They’ve been rolling ever since. Trade for Mark Eaton was a real sign that the Spirits were looking to win.

San Antonio Spurs (8)
1985-1986 Record: 21-26 (13-13, 8-13)
Key Players: George Gervin (17.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG), Brad Davis (15.9 PPG, 7.2 APG, 1.7 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Credit to the Spurs that they’re hanging onto a playoff spot as the Iceman era gets closer and closer to an end.

Houston Rockets
1985-1986 Record: 20-28 (11-15, 9-13)
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (20.5 PPG, 5 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1.4 SPG), Ricky Pierce (23.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG), Darrell Griffith (17.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2 SPG), Jack Sikma (14 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 3.2 APG)
Big Moves: None

Houston has to many pieces that for whatever reason just don’t work well with one another. They especially struggle defensively as Jack Sikma may have lost a step, and guys like Darrell Griffith and Kelly Tripucka aren’t exactly defensive sieves.

Denver Nuggets
1985-1986 Record: 13-34 (6-20, 7-14)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (16.7 PPG, 7.9 RPG), John Drew (15.4 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The bright spot for Denver is they have two projected top 5 draft picks this season. There’s a lot to fix here.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Sacramento Kings (2)

1985-1986 Record: 33-17 (23-5, 10-12)
Key Players: Hakeem Olajuwon (18.6 PPG, 10.8 RPG, 2.0 SPG, 3.2 BPG, 54.4% FG), Patrick Ewing (20.3 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 1.7 BPG, 49.8% FG), Terry Porter (13.2 PPG, 7.2 APG)
Big Moves: None

The Kings fell back down to earth in 1986, running into a tough stretch that included a five-game losing streak to the Heat, Celtics, Lakers, Bulls and Spurs. They still lead the Pacific, but the Lakers are coming.

Los Angeles Lakers (3)
1985-1986 Record: 33-18 (15-15, 18-3)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (20.7 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 9.8 APG, 2 SPG, 51.9% FG, 86% FT), Bernard King (19 G, 33.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.3 SPG, 58.4% FG), Robert Parish (20.5 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1 SPG, 1.4 BPG))
Big Moves: None

Bernard King is back and the Lakers have looked unstoppable once again. Interestingly the offense seems to have been going completely through King as opposed to Magic, but it’s working.

Portland Trail Blazers (4)
1985-1986 Record: 25-23 (12-15, 13-8)
Key Players: Chris Mullin (17.8 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1.6 SPG, 40.7% 3P), Byron Scott (16 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.9 SPG), Oscar Schmidt (13.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG), Otis Thorpe (12.3 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 53.8% FG)
Big Moves: None

Chris Mullin is unstoppable shooting from the floor, and he has this young Portland team looking at a return to the playoffs.

Golden State Warriors (5)
1985-1986 Record: 26-25 (16-13, 10-12)
Key Players: Kiki Vandeweghe (26.2 PPG, 5.5 RPG), Andrew Toney (21.9 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.3 SPG), Darryl Dawkins (14.7 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 50.4% FG), John Stockton (15.3 PPG, 9.6 APG, 2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Warriors can score with anyone but can’t defend anyone. That’s usually not a formula for playoff success, but there’s a lot of talent here so they can’t be counted out.

San Diego Clippers
1985-1986 Record: 21-27 (14-13, 7-14)
Key Players: Otis Birdsong (27.4 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 4 APG, 2 SPG), Wayne Cooper (13.4 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 2.4 BPG), Doc Rivers (16.8 PPG, 5 RPG, 9 APG, 1.5 SPG), Jawann Oldham (10.4 PPG, 10 RPG, 1.4 BPG)
Big Moves: None

Despite Otis Birdsong injecting high level scoring, the Clippers haven’t been able to be on the winning side of most games. It would be nice for San Diego to get one more playoff run before the team moves to Anaheim.

Phoenix Suns
1985-1986 Record: 20-28 (12-15, 8-13)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (24.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1.3 SPG), Mike Woodson (16.1 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3 APG, 2.5 SPG), Kevin Willis (12.2 PPG, 8.7 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The biggest disappointment this season has to the Suns. After a Conference Final run last season, the Suns are currently on the outside looking in regarding the playoffs.

Seattle Supersonics
1985-1986 Record: 13-38 (8-21, 5-17)
Key Players: Ray Williams (14.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 5.7 APG), Steve Stipanovich (12.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Sonics will be playing out the season without much to play for either way.
