UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida underwent hand surgery in late October and has returned to training, but won't be back up to full speed until January, the Brazilian fighter announced on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

“We are practicing but only with fisical treining (sic),â€￾ wrote Machida. “No impact trainings until January.â€￾

Machida injured his left hand during his five-round title bout with Mauricio “Shogunâ€￾ Rua at UFC 104 on Oct. 21 in Los Angeles. The undefeated 31-year-old fighter reportedly required surgery following his contested unanimous decision over Rua, delaying a rematch both fighters had agreed to just minutes after their heated first encounter had concluded.

UFC President Dana White said last week that the Machida-Rua rematch is set for May 1 in Montreal. Machida has apparently already put some thought into re-engaging with the challenger many thought had out-pointed him at UFC 104.

“We are going to make some changes on the strategy for the next fight, but I won't be able to tell the details of it to you guys,â€￾ wrote Machida.

This item was updated at 7:44 p.m. E.T. to include information on Machida's hand surgery.
