Coming Soon said:
Coming Soon reports that Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2 has been moved from July 3, 2015 to July 1, 2016.

It's still unknown if Will Smith will return to play Captain Steven Hiller, but Emmerich said that scripts have been written (by himself and Dean Devlin) with and without Hiller in them. Emmerich has also said that several original characters are in the scripts. The 1996 film starred Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Randy Quaid, Mary McDonnell, Brent Spiner, James Duval and Vivica A. Fox.
Sounds like they're probably holding out hope that Smith will sign on.

Yeah, he was the crazy scientist at Area 51 that said "as you can imagine, they don't let us out much around here." Later he gets taken over by the captured alien.

That is right. Ok now I remember. Still think this film will be an utter failure unless they get a whole new cast in a different time and different attackers but with them remembering who saved them and how the first time. I could be wrong though

I doubt it'll make anywhere close to the money that the original did, even if they manage to get Smith back. I'd say your idea is probably the best since it would at least freshen things up, but the more likely scenario is them desperately trying to copy the original and failing hard.

I liked the first one wished they would have done a sequel sooner or completely forget about it.

I thought that they DID completely forget about it. I don't really remember hearing much about a sequel until last year and now all of a sudden it's a go. They definitely should have milked it back in the 90's when it was hotter though, since I think its time has passed.

I think someone has been pushing for the sequel for awhile now but never got the backing it needed. The only way to do it with some interest is on the 20 year anniversary of the original.

Which is probably another reason it got moved back. Still don't think it'll be anything special though, just another shitty sequel.

Not really looking forward to it, but curious as to how they handle the story without completely copying the first one.
