As part of the process in reopening the door for his old career in pro wrestling, AEW's CM Punk officially closed the door on his other short-lived career: professional MMA fighter for the UFC.

Punk informed the world's top MMA organization that he is retiring from MMA, first reported by MMA Fighting on Tuesday.
By retiring, the 42-year-old no longer has to be offered fights in order to keep his contract alive, nor is he subject to drug testing from USADA, the organization's anti-doping program, He was tested six times last year.

Punk (Phil Brooks) signed with the UFC in 2014, famously making the announcement with Joe Rogan during a UFC pay-per-view, drawing skepticism from both the MMA and pro wrestling worlds as he had no martial arts experience.

Training in Milwaukee, WI, at Roufusport, Pun didn't debut until September 2016 at UFC 203 where he was defeated by Mickey Gall via first round submission.

Another long absence followed before he challenged Mike Jackson at UFC 225 in June 2018, a fight Punk originally lost by unanimous decision. It was later overturned after Jackson tested positive for marijuana. In subsequent interviews, Punk didn't show any inclination to return but also didn't say he was done fighting.

Punk is still planning on doing commentary with Cage Fury Fighting Championships. He returns to the ring this Sunday at AEW All Out against Darby Allin.

Yeah he give up the props for the having the balls to go into MMA that the majority of people here on this Smarks wouldn't have the Stones to do. Pretty cool to know he'll still be doing Commentary though.

They wouldn't suit up against LeBron 1 on 1 but everyone still shits on him too lol Punk sucked at MMA and it's hilarious to joke about it IMO never saw it as a personal attack on the guy, all we do on here is talk about whether people suck or not in wrestling anyway

He's back where he needs to be now and all is right in the world lol

Woulda honestly respected his MMA run more if he didn't go straight to getting his shit pushed in in the UFC. Ain't no way he really thought he was gonna walk in and start beating people at that level. Can't knock him for following the money but I also don't think you can say he did what he did out of passion or some respect for the craft. :lol

Let's be honest he was thrown into the fire way too early when it came to his MMA Career. You can't throw out a guy who has been training for Months and expect him to beat a solid, Midlevel MMA talent. It's like I'm watching the Paul Brothers and they are beating guys no where near experienced in Boxing and I'm like come on guys fight a real Boxer and see what you really got. I'm glad he said to himself I tried it and got beat now what is the next plan for me in my life. How many guys do you see don't get that bing in their heads in that same situation and they get really hurt.

That's like telling your ex girlfriend that broke up with you 6 months later than it's over. Yes CM Punk MMA already left you, bro.

The only thing of note here is bc he was technically still an active fighter he'd have random drug tests lmao guess he was still holding out some hope

I'm pretty sure had to for regulations and things of that nature. I don't think he had any lingering belief he still had an MMA career left.
