'Mega Man' Live Action Movie In Development

Considering all the gaming related movies as of late, it didn’t take long beforeHollywood focused its gaze upon Capcom’s much loved Mega Man series.

The movie’s production is being headed up by 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment, with Peter Chernin being involved directly as a producer as well as involving David Ready and Michael Finfer. The latter having recently been involved in the new Planet of the Apes movies in case you’re wondering.

Known as Rock Man in Japan the first game debuted back in 1987 on the NES. Ostensibly a side scrolling shooter platformer game, it was also fiendishly difficult.

Over the years it has had multiple iterations and built up a decent fanbase, howeverCapcom hasn’t managed the license all that well as they canned multiple games which caused a great deal of uproar with the fans.

That said Capcom are trying to breathe new life back into Mega Man, as they recently released the Legacy Collection across multiple platforms and already have an animated series in the works.

So this does seem like a concerted effort to bring the brand up to date and build a greater amount of mind-share regarding the series.

However Hollywood has a very long track record of ruining gaming related movies. Something both Pixels and Hitman 47 recently reminded us.

There’s definitely enough narrative content to make a Mega Man movie at least but whether this new production will stay true to the host material remains to be seen.

While I am happy to see Mega Man given more attention I am somewhat wary as to the live action movie route, especially a Hollywood one.

Only time will tell whether they will pull it off but a good place to start would be to definitely play and get good at the the classic games, as that’s where the heart of the series’ ongoing charm and popularity lies.

This will surely come off looking strange. Mega Man is a prime example of a film that is way better off being a animated, CGI-fest than it is being a live action movie. But then again, they managed to make an excellent live-action film out of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back in 1990 (and the sequels were good too, but they couldn't touch the awesomeness of the original), so I guess you never know. I fear this will definitely come off looking corny, though. Some games are better left off being just that. (Did the live-action version of the Super Mario Brothers not teach anyone anything?)
