JULY 31 TRADE DEADLINE ANALYSIS

JULY 30: Trade with SF Giants

INDIANS GET: RP Randy Moffitt

GIANTS GET: SP Rick Waits

ANALYSIS: The Indians get much-needed relief help in right-hander Randy Moffitt. The Indians had been using three lefties in their 'pen and the preferred balance is 3-2 righties/lefties in relief. Moffitt is streaky. Can be solid. But also can get hit hard at times. Known for getting into some jams that can give a manager a few more gray hairs.

The Giants get the Indians' number four starter in the rotation in left-hander Rick Waits. Waits was pretty steady for the Tribe, but can be wild and give up his share of free passes which can get him into trouble. But, he's a strong enough starter to help bolster a Giants' rotation that already features Bob Knepper, Ed Halicki and John Montefusco. This move for the Giants was made with an eye towards '78 as they are out of contention this year.

TRADE WINNER: Toss-up

JULY 31: Trade with Toronto Blue Jays

INDIANS GET: OF Otto Velez

BLUE JAYS GET: OF/1B Bruce Bochte

ANALYSIS: This was a shocker. Bochte was a cornerstone of the Indians' everyday line-up. A solid .300 hitter and very good outfielder, no one expected Bochte to be traded, especially during a surprising Tribe pennant run. But, with long-term injuries to key starters OF Johnny Grubb and 2B Duane Kuiper, the team had to look to make some moves.

The Indians get OF Otto Velez in return. Velez is a fair hitter average-wise, but his power-hitting prowess made this a gamble that Indians' GM Phil Seghi was willing to take. The Indians needed more pop in the line-up and they got it here. In the field, Velez will never be a serious Gold Glove candidate. He'll make things an adventure out there.

GM Phil Seghi said he hated to part with Bochte. But sometimes in life you have to do things you don't want to to try and succeed. This was one of those times.

TRADE WINNER: Indians - Bochte brings a much-needed fielding upgrade and .300 average to Toronto. But Velez helps the Indians in the power-department as soon as he steps on the field and may help power (no pun intended) the Indians to a division title.

JULY 31: Trade with L.A. Dodgers

INDIANS GET: IF Ted Martinez and OF John Hale

DODGERS GET: OF/C Wayne Nordhagen and INF Luis Gomez

ANALYSIS: With 2B Duane Kuiper out until almost the end of the season and Paul Dade a liability at second and Luis Gomez not hitting (21-131) for most of the season, the Indians needed to make this move out of pure necessity. The Indians get Ted Martinez, who can play second, third and shortstop. Martinez was a back-up in L.A. who spelled Davey Lopes at second, Bill Russell at short and Ron Cey at third in the infield and also pinch-hit on occasion. A decent hitter and very good with the glove, Martinez will get the chance to play everyday with the Indians. It's also expected that when Kuiper comes back, Martinez will replace Frank Duffy at shortstop. OF John Hale is an excellent fielder and mediocre hitter who will most likely be used as a late-inning fielding replacement and pinch-hitter.

The Dodgers get C/OF Wayne Nordhagen, acquired before the season from the White Sox in the big trade for SP Dennis Eckersley, was expected to be a major offensive cog for the Indians but it did not pan out. Nordhagen struggled during his time in Celveland and, while showing flashes of what was hoped for from him, never gained traction and the Indians basically gave up on him over the course of his time with the team. He'll be a reserve outfielder and back-up to back-up catcher Johnny Oates as well as a pinch-hitter. He does have power coming off the bench. INF Luis Gomez steps into the spot that was held by Ted Martinez in L.A. He'll back-up at second, short and third and occasionally pinch-hit.

TRADE WINNER: Indians - Ted Martinez is worth gambling on. The middle infield buckled somewhat with the loss of Kuiper at second. Martinez helps shore up the situation and might well thrive against AL pitching. The Dodgers took on a project in Nordhagen and may be looking to turn him into a starting outfielder for the team in the near future. But the Dodger outfield is a much tougher nut to crack than the Indians' infield. Don't hold your breath expecting Gomez to be a Dodger or Hale to be an Indian in '78. They were largely throw-ins.
