the term emo described a subgenre of hardcore punk which stemmed from the Washington, D.C. music scene. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore"
Carrabba's music featured lyrics founded in deep diary-like outpourings of emotion. While certainly emotional, the new "emo" had a far greater appeal amongst adolescents than its earlier incarnations.

I don't recognize that attribution. I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most Blue term ever. I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that—what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What—they were robots or something? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Yeah, that's where the origin came from, but now emo is more specific to sound because, as the guy you quoted said, every band has emotional lyrics.
thanks, thats what i was trying to say. the origin is right. sure, every song has some sort of emotion in em but not that type of emotion.

oh and i go by the original definition.

So NOTHING exclusive to the so-called genre then?

Seriously... What bullshit.

(I don't blame the musicians one bit - They're just doing their thing for the best part - but between the journalist who probably coined the phrase and the fans that embraced it, someone needs a good slap for being such a pretentious wanker.)

I completely agree with that. I've had people yell at me about calling it emo when I'm just calling it what it is known as. I know every genre has emotion (except techno, lol) and I know the name doesn't make since, but that doesn't change the fact that is what the genre is referred to. It's kind of like dinosaur. That means "terrible lizard." But the dinosaurs technically weren't lizards and I guess you can say they weren't exactly terrible either, but we still call them dinosaurs.

No offense, but my assumption is that you made that comment in ignorance - American's generally don't even realise that Techno came from black America (Detroit to be precise) and has strong spiritual links to MoTown.

Another discussion/thread maybe and another time, but do you even know what Techno really is?

Well, it was pretty much a joke, but all in all a spiritual link to a past genre doesn't mean the current incarnation of it expresses the same soul. Look at rap. When it first started it meant something. it was about people's lives and struggles, etc. Now (at least the more popular stuff) is about sex and money. Techno now is pretty much made for people to dance to.
