That being said, from what I understand he never actually said that. People just twisted what he said. What he was talking about was creating a cheaper version of premium to try to entice more people onto a paying version of the platform, but he never said that he was going to do away with free membership.

It's funny because the "bot armies" aren't really a thing. Bots do exist and it's usually a specific set of people that make them for a variety of reason (Russian misinformation, Bangladeshi Sex Bots, etc.)

I think the issue that Musk is finding is that an overwhelming majority of people find him distasteful and just another shitty capitalist businessman.
