Yancy Medeiros’ UFC Fight Night 31 win overturned due to failed drug test
UFC lightweight Yancy Medeiros failed his “UFC Fight Night 31: UFC Fight for the Troops 3†post-fight drug test in November.
UFC officials confirmed with MMAjunkie that Medeiros (9-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) tested positive for marijuana metabolites and was suspended 90 days retroactive to the day of his Nov. 6 bout with Yves Edwards (42-20-1 MMA, 10-8 UFC).
“UFC lightweight Yancy Medeiros tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout against Yves Edwards at UFC Fight for the Troops 3,†the organization’s statement read. “He was informed that his positive test violated the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy and Promotional Agreement with Zuffa, LLC.
“He agreed to and served a 90-day suspension retroactive to the event, and must pass a drug test before receiving clearance to compete again.â€
As a result of the positive test, the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority has changed Medeiros’ first-round knockout win over Edwards to a no-contest.
Featuring a headlining bout between Tim Kennedy and Rafael Natal, UFC Fight Night 31 took place Nov. 6 at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. The FOX Sports 1-televised event took place in front of military personnel at the base.
Medeiros, a Hawaiian and former Strikeforce fighter, is once again looking for his first UFC victory. The former middleweight made his lightweight and promotional debut at UFC 159 and suffered a TKO loss (due to an injury) to Rustam Khabilov. He followed it up with the Edwards fight.
Medeiros’ suspension concluded earlier this month, meaning his scheduled bout against Joe Ellenberger (14-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 172 on April 26 is expected to go on as planned.
