Alberto Del Rio has once again been victimized by WWE creative's haphazard booking as his long planned match with John Cena at SummerSlam was nixed hours before last night's Raw telecast in Hampton, Virginia.

Del Rio was removed from the title picture when creative did a full overhaul of the match line-up for SummerSlam Monday afternoon and deemed their plans for CM Punk as "awful." Had The Straight Edge Superstar not been slotted in the title match, his much talked about storyline would extinguish.

Though Del Rio had the rug pulled out from under him once again, creative has the 34-year-old pegged for a title run this fall. WWE announced today they will present a landmark tour across Mexico this October and a number of high ranking officials feel Del Rio appearing as champion will garner a great deal of media attention.

Meanwhile, The Miz was at one point scheduled to reign supreme in the WWE Championship Tournament on Raw. Creative later changed their mind and the WWE Championship was awarded to Rey Mysterio, who got to hold the title for approximately an hour and a half.
I love how this report comes out after earlier in the day they reported that WWE has moved more towards longer term booking.

Just do us a favour aswell and have Del Rio lose his title shot

Why would WWE think the Punk storyline is awful? It's the biggest thing they've done in years.

They deemed their plans for him as awful, that's why it was overhauled.

I guess if Del Rio/Cena was supposed to happen what they ended up doing was much better.

Meltzer made mention of something like that on the F4W/WO radio show.

And as for Del Rio, well Meltzer seems to think whoever wins at Summerslam Del Rio's going to cash in then and there and win the WWE title. I really hope they hold Del Rio from cashing in for another few months.

It's not Del Rio's time, can they not fucking wait to throw the belt on some of their wrestlers?

Del Rio wins = CM Punk fans pissed = Del Rio vs Cena feud = EVERYONE pissed = shit product = shit ratings and numbers.

It's CM PUNK's time, do not take it away from him. I'm a Del Rio fan too.

- As noted yesterday, WWE overhauled the SummerSlam card on Monday after deciding that their creative plans for CM Punk at the event were "awful." This caused Alberto Del Rio to be removed from the WWE Title picture once again.

Del Rio is still scheduled to be WWE Champion at some point in the near future. Those close to the booking situation indicate that John Cena vs. Del Rio for the belt is planned for September but that could always change.

Part of the reason WWE wanted Del Rio as WWE Champion at SummerSlam is because of the Los Angeles market and the hope that they would draw from the Latin community. There was also a long-term plan of Del Rio being champion when WWE returns to Mexico in October with the idea that the would be the first Mexican to hold a WWE Title in Mexico while they were taping TV there for the first time. Del Rio going back to Mexico as WWE Champion is seen as a way to broaden the fan base in what is currently the company's strongest market.
Gonna be interesting to see how they manage to tie all this together.
