WWE Planning To Host Major Event In India In January 2023

WWE is reportedly heading to India for a major event in 2023.

The WWE Universe in India is very passionate and it appears that they will soon be treated to their own major live event. As reported by Sportskeeda Wrestling, WWE is preparing for a show on "a grand scale" in the city of Hyderabad, India. It is sad that the roster will be a mixture of WWE Superstars as well as Indian competitors. As of now, the only Superstar reported to be locked for the event is Drew McIntyre. Drew was recently in India for a Bollywood project.

Per the report, but likely date of the event is January 18. It could not be confirmed whether or not this would be a follow-up to WWE Superstar Spectacle, an event that was held for the Indian audience within the WWE Thunderdome back in 2021. It is also currently unknown how, or if, this event will be broadcast.

At the time of that event, there were plans to form an NXT brand located in India, creating a brand specifically catered to that audience. Learn more about those plans here.

WWE is reportedly returning to India in January.

A new report from PWInsider notes that WWE is scheduled to run a live event on Wednesday, January 18. This is scheduled to be a SmackDown brand event, but it wasn’t clear if the show will be taped to air.

There’s also no word yet on the city and location for the show, but this would be WWE’s first event in India since December 2017. WWE will likely officially announce event in the coming weeks.

It was recently reported that WWE had a live event planned for January 18 or January 19, with the location still to be determined. It was then reported by Sportskeeda that WWE had plans to hold the event in Hyderabad, but WWE has not confirmed the location as of this writing.

It was believed that the January event will feature a roster made up of Superstars, both Indian and international, but there’s no word yet on who will be working the show besides SmackDown Superstars.​

As PWInsider.com previously broke, WWE's first live event in India since December 2017 will be Wednesday 1/18/23.

PWInsider.com can now confirm the event will be held in Hyderabad, India at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, a 5,000 seat venue that opened back in 2002.

The event will mostly feature Smackdown brand talents. WWE has not yet announced the show officially.

WWE produced a TV special designed specifically for the Indian market, The Superstar Spectacular timed for Republic Day in January 2021.​

WWE’s big return to India was reportedly postponed by Sony Six.

As we’ve noted, WWE has planned to return to India for a big live event on Wednesday, January 18 from the 5,000-seat Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, India. The event was scheduled to be a SmackDown brand show, and while most of the wrestlers in action were expected to be blue brand Superstars, the roster was likely to feature various Indian and international talents. However, it was reported this week that the event was postponed for unknown reasons. It was also reported, via Ringside News, that WWE’s return to India had “a lot to do with TV,” perhaps a reference to local TV deals.

In an update, a new report from the Wrestling Observer notes that the decision to postpone the event was made by WWE’s TV partner in India, Sony Six, not WWE.

Sony Six is merging with Zee in India, and the decision was made to postpone the WWE event until the merger is finalized. The merger is expected to go through in April, so WWE’s return to the country should happen some time after WrestleMania 39.

The event, when it happens, will be WWE’s first live event in India since December 2017. It’s believed that the event will be taped for the local market and for Peacock/WWE Network, but that has not been confirmed.​
