A report in Monday’s Boston Herald states that World Wrestling Entertainment is looking to shift its business strategy to attract lucrative, year-round sponsorships for its television shows, live events and web site.
“With an eye toward big brands, WWE is pushing to create exclusive partnerships with advertisers that would include branding rights, product placement and ads on its Web site and magazine,†the website attributes to Ethan Green of WWE.
Although WWE has worked with top-level advertisers in the past, most such deals have been one-time purchases. WWE now hopes to attract “official†sponsors, similar to how the MLB, NFL and even UFC operate.
According to the article, WWE wants to line up six official sponsors for 2008 with seven-figure price tags. WWE no longer sells the commercials that air in between its television shows, so the sponsorships would be directly linked to the WWE product.
WWE was expected to publicly announce the new marketing strategy early this week.
