Since returning to WWE for the first time in six years, the incomparable Rob Van Dam has been driven by one simple goal: winning back championship gold. However, after suffering an excruciating defeat to World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio at WWE Battleground, the Extreme Superstar will be taking some time off.

As revealed on Raw, RVD announced his decision in an exclusive interview for the "WWE Battleground 2013" DVD. Although he can still physically go, mentally and spiritually, he needs some time off, he said.

Despite considerable ability inside the squared circle, the high-octane competitor has not only failed to acquire the prize in two separate World Title pay-per-view matches against Del Rio, but he also fell short in his bid to capture his second guaranteed WWE Title contract in the Money in the Bank All-Stars Ladder Match and lost to United States Champion Dean Ambrose.

Stay with WWE.com for future updates, as the WWE Universe eagerly awaits the return of this exciting competitor.
Must have missed this on RAW, but it''s not a surprise given the outcome of last nights match and the sheets saying he was signed for 90 days on and then 90 off. Enough time off and ready to return around the Rumble and WrestleMania season.

I guess if he does come back and win the title it will mean more this way. Van Dam nowadays works best in short spells.

Was this a surprise? Because I thought it was clear that RVD had the Jerciho deal.

I think rotating veterans every few months would benefit the WWE more than anything, keep the noboedy young guys on the road to try get themselves over and have the vets as special attractions. Rotating them to face your heel champions or face champoions is as close to territory tactics than anything they've done since the 70s.

I never expected him to wrestle as much as he did, he had two matches a week almost every week since returning. Fun run while it lasted.

Had more than that actually. He worked a every Raw, SD, full time road, and international schedule. He's even working NXT this week and doing a Performance Center session with the developmental guys. By all means I never expected a guy like him to go so full tilt.

Rob Van Dam at the Performance Centre gets a chuckle out of me, not sure what he would have to teach, other than stretching techniques. Sure wouldn't be promo work or in-ring psychology. Would be like an And1 baller holding a class at a basketball camp.

Well with the finish of his match with ADR, him havin' to take some time off makes sense. I do think there is still life in that feud and RVD could easily come back in a few months and still be a threat for the WHC easily. Honestly, at first after his absence and his horrible TNA run I wanted to just see him fight for the regular midcard belts but he as been fantastic fillin' in for the secondary title.
