Anybody who has spoken to me knows that I'm not the biggest fan of modern-day wrestling, hence hell has frozen over tagline. I've also always had the urge to write a WrestleMania but never gotten to one so here's hoping that changes. Admittedly, I've some high level plans for this but need to flesh it out a little further, just wanted to get this posted before Smackdown so I can settle into my own plans and not be swayed to change my mind. I plan on continuing with WCW BTB as well so not sure whether this will get the same in full treatment, or more of a recap. We'll see. Anyway, happy new year I guess...

There are so many ways you can take this, given what we know from the first week of 2024. I'll be very interested in seeing where you take things too, and after seeing your previous week, this should be a blast. The road to WrestleMania is unquestionably in good hands with you with the pencil.

Thanks for the comments, DTP. Much appreciated. As always with these news and notes post in my BTB's, some of these may be real, whilst some of these may be rumors.

WWE News And Notes

With Smackdown New Years Revolution pending, there’s said to be mixed reviews backstage on the performance of New Year's Knockout Week so far. Raw Day One has been considered a success, however it’s said that not everybody was impressed with NXT’s New Year's Evil. Eyes are already on NXT Vengeance Day, with the idea that the third brand of WWE must bounce back.

The biggest news out of the week so far is undoubtedly the return of WWE and Hollywood Superstar, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Based on his ‘head of the table’ comments, it seems most likely he will end up completing a program with Roman Reigns. Cody Rhodes is seemingly lined up to take on Roman at WrestleMania, so there’s a big watch this space on how everything pans out.

Not to be out done with The Rock returning on Raw, there are now rumors circulating that a former WWE Champion will also be making a surprise appearance on Smackdown this week.

It’s said that from next week onwards, a majority of the focus will be on the Royal Rumble matches. According to a source backstage, Triple H wants to bring back the importance of fighting for qualifying for the Rumble, fighting for the 30th spot, and the disadvantage of being the first entrant. This will likely feature heavily in programming over the next few weeks

There are a few big name returns scheduled for the Royal Rumble but it’s likely these will be already rostered on talent. Nostalgic one night only returns will be few and far between this year, with WWE said to want to focus on the talent they already have on the roster.

Finally, outside of Premium Live Events, and weekly specials such as what we have seen this week on WWE programming, we are likely to see a change in the in ring content. It’s being said that Triple H wants to bring back the importance of wrestlers finishing moves, and doesn’t want every finisher being kicked out of in every match on every show. The quote of “bringing back the art of a TV match” is apparently one that was thrown around in a production meeting.

Vancouver, British, Colombia, Canada
Rogers Arena

Triple Threat Match
Winner is Number One Contender for WWE Universal Championship

AJ Styles vs. LA Knight vs. Randy Orton

I feel this is the only change from real life. I doubt you do the Roman charges in with the bloodline to cause a DQ. Orton wins setting up a big match for royal rumble

WWE United States Championship Number One Contender Tournament Final
Kevin Owens
vs. Santos Escobar

Owens punching Logan Paul in the jaw sounds fun

WWE Womens Championship Match
Iyo Sky ©
defends against Michin

Iyo's reign has a way to go yet with the Bayley drama and Michin would be an out of nowhere win

Tag Team Match
Pretty Deadly vs. Butch and ???

Tyler Bate debuting makes too much sense but it could also be Sheamus?

BONUS QUESTIONS

What will be the longest match on the show? Triple threat
What will be the shortest match on the show? Tag team match
Who will take the fall in the Triple Threat match? AJ Styles
Who will be Butch's tag team partner? Tyler Bate
Will there be any surprise appearances? If so, who? (this does not include Butch's partner) The Rock? Or Cody if he counts since he is on Raw
Two matches will be booked on this show as Royal Rumble Qualifying matches for next week’s edition of Smackdown. Predict what those matches are.

Thanks for those who left predictions. Honestly a little nervous on how this will be received as I'm just not overly familiar with booking anything WWE passed 2006. Anyway, just a bit of an update on the way the shows will be written in here. This ones a bit of an exception, as because it was the New Years Revolution special, it's rather lengthy. Moving forward for shows outside of premium live events and weekly specials, promos will be the focus but match recaps will be rather condensed. I'll keep the detailed match recaps and smaller promos for WCW. Anyway, hope you guys enjoy this.

Despite some concerns, still chugging along with this. Next show is in the works, hopefully I don't get on another WCW roll and will post a Raw relatively soon.

Alright, if you three prediction leavers want to PM me a Rumble entrant you'd like to see for both men's and women's, I'll see what adjustments I can make. Anyway, Raw's done, expect things to be somewhat similar to real life for a little bit, but hoping there's enough here to still be enjoyable.

WWE Friday Night SmackDown - January 5, 2024:

I'm sure with your track record of producing compelling shows, this won't be too big of a contrast for you to fall into a groove with. I always find that writing for modern television is a breeze compared to that of the Attitude Era, or even the Golden Era. We've already seen so many of the different elements and formats that television shows can be produced wherein, and thanks to that, WWE in a modern framework is very linear and simple.

I liked the cold open with Kevin Owens, and have to wonder where things are going. What he has in his car is the big question, and hilariously, I like to think he's got that dude in the Prime Energy drink costume all tied up and kidnapped, back there.

It was probably the wisest decision to make going with the Fatal 4-Way route for Royal Rumble. Why choose between Randy Orton, AJ Styles and LA Knight when you could simply go with all three of them. Still, interesting and unique take to have Nick Aldis reschedule the match for later with no outside interference. Unfortunately, barring some wild change being made, Roman Reigns is most definitely coming out on top as WWE Undisputed Universal Champion. Nick Aldis continuing to be Roman Reigns' counterpart was fine, though I must say I did enjoy how it was executed in real life more, with Paul Heyman being forced to be the burden of bad news while the Bloodline stood tall. I hope there are plans for Solo Sikoa.

I feel that as effective as Damage CTRL's run of Friday Night SmackDown has been, that there has been a fleeting focus on some of the babyfaces. That's the issue with Triple H's vision for the product, I feel, with Rhea Ripley dominating things with little opposition on Monday Night RAW, too. I'd be game for seeing Michin get a better focus, and Bianca Belair is always going to be your golden goose when it comes to babyface women.

I really hope you manage to make me care about Grayson Waller. The guy has such go-away heat for me, but the promo for what it was was decent enough. I'm glad to see Carlito step towards him, and move away from Santos Escobar and the Garzas. I wouldn't mind seeing Carlito move away from the Latino World Order as prominently, too, for that matter. All that aside, I can't see Carlito as too much more than a veteran face that can get younger talent over - both in the ring and on the mic.

Did I miss something? I'm not sure why the Street Profits needed to be here, considering they had their own thing going on with Bobby Lashley. Did Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo take him out? I did like the touch of bringing Bret Hart to SmackDown as a special guest, and the write-up for this tournament finals was well done. KO beating Escobar made logical sense with the WWE United States Championship on the line at Royal Rumble. Really, Logan Paul accompanying Escobar gave it away as such. Hopefully you can reflect how strong and effective the feud Owens and Paul have had so far.

I suppose Roman Reigns and The Rock is a destination, which really should lead one to question how we progress en route to the Road to WrestleMania. I'm not opposed to Rock and Roman being held, but I don't see why there can't be two matches at the two days at WrestleMania, both featuring the WWE Undisputed Universal Champion...

I was sad to see Cameron Grimes, Butch and Tyler Bate suffer the brunt of Karrion Kross and the Authors of Pain. I really have not been enamoured by the Final Testament thus far in their short time on SmackDown. I feel like Cameron deserves much better, particularly. Akam and Rezar did need this badly, though, as new acts. I suspect this will be a brief television match to set up the already faction-heavy scene on SmackDown.

Ashante is a strange one, especially now that Hit Row are no more. I wouldn't mind he and B-Fab going along as a duo. Austin Theory's star has fallen so fast, I barely remember him being a main event staple in WWE 2022. Thank God for that.

Iyo Sky retaining the WWE Women's Championship against Michin was expected, and I suspect this will be it for Iyo and Damage CTRL until the Royal Rumble comes and goes. I wonder how you can deviate from the expect projection of Bayley's babyface turn.
The main event being round two of the Triple Threat match is innovation, as much as it is a daring concept to have the talent and viewers endure the same match a second time in one night. Especially with the Triple Threat match's length. This write-up was great for this, and if television prior to this has been anything to go by, LA Knight and AJ Styles comes off as a rivalry in itself, while Randy Orton continues his return with a shot at the WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns. I can't see Orton winning, as noted before, but I wonder what the idea is long-term for him.

WWE Monday Night RAW - January 8, 2024:

I think there is a lot that can be done with the situation involving the General Managers, and I do like the fluidity of managerial figures covering both shows. Maybe it could have interesting repercussions, say if Nick Aldis had to cover Adam Pearce one night or visa-versa. General messing with the other's show is a tried-and-tested concept as far as the brand supremacy angle goes, but there's a lot that can be done with it to make it feel fresh and exciting. I wouldn't mind Triple H remaining a rare appearance kind of guy, that said. I did like the set-up for determining the entrants per brand. Simple and concise.

Drew McIntyre answering for his loss at Day 1 makes a lot of sense, and one thing I'm interested in is seeing how you handle his character, as it's one of the more compelling acts on the roster right now. Damian Priest, it's hard to consider a decent time to cash in Money in the Bank. He and Drew could have some killer matches, though.

Kofi Kingston and Ludwig Kaiser have had some really interesting angles of late, and I do like the new sign of viciousness out of regular henchman, Kaiser. The New Day and Imperium is a natural feud, I'm just hopeful you manage to make the New Day an exciting tandem again, after what feels like years of complacency.

Nia Jax continuing her angle with Becky Lynch makes sense, and I am eager to see how this develops after Day 1. Hopefully that match was not to be a one-and-done, as I felt Nia actually had decent chemistry with Becky.

Jey Uso getting a win over J.D. McDonagh was obvious, as Jey makes more sense as a Royal Rumble entry, as opposed to the bottom guy of the Judgment Day. I feel there is a lot more than we've been able to see with J.D. as the stooge of the faction, that said.

CM Punk's promo was well written, and basically was everything it needed to be with Cody Rhodes' interruption. Their back-and-forth was really good stuff on the live show, and I would suspect they'll be two frontrunners in the Royal Rumble match. I could have gone without Shinsuke Nakamura's involvement, and I also don't feel that Punk would have stood idly by and let the attack happen. It kind of dampered an important and crucial moment as it was.

I hope to see Jinder Mahal get an interesting arc after what we've seen in recent weeks. The stuff with The Rock and Seth Rollins as we've seen of late, is a good start.

Kayden Carter and Katana Chance needed to win the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship really, but I just hope you don't use them to switch the titles so quickly, as seen in real life. I feel like Chelsea Green and Piper Niven have chemistry there that negates the need for the belts. Hopefully Carter and Chance are your champions to help revive what is left of the women's tag team division.

I think the burning thing that's been missing from this whole #DIY revival thing is more time for Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa to exposit their relationship and where they stand right now. Admittedly this segment felt a little like a Team Rocket skit, but there is groundwork laid here.

I'm pleased to see the Judgment Day and R-Truth continue their running gag, and the subsequent match with the Awesome Truth reuniting made sense. The disqualification win made for a natural WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championship defense at some point, and there is much that can be said for how J.D. McDonagh is the scapegoat of the group, all thanks to R-Truth's meddling. I like Dominik Mysterio serving somewhat as the tweener, too.

Rhea Ripley's promo made sense, essentially a feminine version of CM Punk's promo from earlier. I wasn't expecting Natalya to be the one to intrude, but I suppose it's something. Nattie desperately needs rebuilding after the squash loss she had against the WWE Women's World Champion last year.

Ivar and Akira Tozawa have really had a lot of chances to shine of late, so I'm glad to see this remain. I wouldn't have minded seeing Akira get the upset win, but it works. Ivar has a lot of potential as a singles guy while Erik's out hurt. Alpha Academy have been deprived of a chance to shine in the bloated tag team ranks, so that would be nice to see at some point down the line.

Cody Rhodes getting a lot of time with Shinsuke Nakamura made sense as a strong main event. This is the problem I have with three-hour RAWs under the helm of Triple H, really - they are a lot better structured than the Vince McMahon regime, but result in stretched out matches between guys who have no business going that long. Particularly a Shinsuke, who, God bless, is not the worker he once was. Overall, strong ending with Cody getting the clean win.

This was a fun first week. I really hope to see you stick it out, because I've enjoyed what I've read so far. It's drastically different than WCW 2000, which you've been rolling with for a long time, but I like that.

I haven't forgotten about this BTB or BTB in general, just finding less and less time to do this BTB thing. Anyway, before I finish NXT I wanted to post the below. Credit to Looking Glass for the banners.
