Ok, I've been downloading movies recently in hopes of burning them to a dvd so that I have my own copy of the film without having to buy it. I've done this with wrestling shows and PPVs and all that jazz, but now I'm trying to do it with movies.

So I've downloaded Frequency, Quarantine, Righteous Kill, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Wrestler so far. What I've used in the past to burn wrestling stuff is Nero or Roxio (The best out there probably.) So when I go to add the movie file to the project using Roxio, the only movie that comes up is Quarantine. It's an AVI file where as all the others are Windows Media Players files (MKV file), so that's obviously the problem. I tried Nero too and it wouldn't accept them either. I doubt you can convert a movie/file that is like 600 mb big to AVIs, but idk. Can anyone help me out here?

I think you can only decompress (the size) movies while converting, but you can not do the vice versa (expand while converting).

So do you have a converter that will convert files that are almost 700mb in size?

depending on format. If its as DVD format you want to change it to mp4 or avi or wmv as an example, then go with "1 click dvd converter" program.

I want to convert them from MKV to AVI like I specified.

Yeah, the screenshots looked pretty high quality. That's why I downloaded them. I don't want to burn shitty quality onto a dvd.

I know, but I'm thinking it could be though that if its coded for blu-ray it may not be burnable as dvd format no matter what program you have. You would either need a blu-ray burner (which the blank discs alone are like $20-$30 each) or as someone said if there is a way to convert the file, but again if its coded for blu-ray that may not work either.

as This Guy said, Blueray is a complicated format as you can not pirate that copy (still till today) so I think you MAY convert the format (im not sure if it will allow you to convert it even).

Try split the file of the movie into several smaller files, then try convert them to whatever format you want. AVI would be the best choice here.
If the software is not helping you, then as I said try splitting the file into smaller fractions (100Mb or 300Mb Max) and try the online converters instead of the software of your PC.

Ok, so I did some searching (google does wonders obviously ), ans I got this awesome program called ImTOO MPEG Encoder that converts exactly what I need. Took about an hour to convert the file, but now when I play the AVI converted file in WMP, there's no sound. Picture is fine and all, but there's no sound. Anyone know what I might have done wrong?

MKV is usually a Blu-ray rip.

.MKV can be any rip, it's just a high quality compressed movie.

I love .mkv's, and the best program for it to convert from .MKV to .AVI imo is Allok 3GP PSP MP4 iPod Video Converter. It convers .MKV's to ANYTHING, so don't be thrown off by the name.

For the sound, try the K-Lite Community Codec pack and ffdshow. Never goes wrong for me.
