Top 10 Pro Football Head Coaches (In No Particular Order)

CFL-NFL.jpg

Let's kick these lists off with some of the greatest head coaching names in all of football, be it CFL, NFL, the 60's AFL, or defunct leagues of the past. While many people consider Super Bowl championships the be-all end-all of contention between head coaches, this list will do something much different. Grey Cups (CFL's Super Bowl), Super Bowls, NFL Championships (1920-1969), and other Pro Football Championships will be considered equal measure for this list. In the interest of fairness, other accomplishments (Perfect Seasons, Career Wins, etc.) will be added in for consideration on this list. Without further ado, let us take a dive into ten of the best head coaches in Professional Football history.

I
Don Shula
(2/6 Super Bowls, 1x NFL Champion, 347 Career Wins, Complete Perfect Season)

20120410_kdl_am8_023.0.jpg

Kicking off our list is one of the greatest coaches the NFL has ever seen, the man, the myth, the legendary Don Shula. Shula took over head coaching duties for the flaccid Baltimore Colts in 1963, and made them a perennial contender for the NFL Championship. The highlight of Shula's career in Baltimore was winning the NFL Championship against the Cleveland Browns in an utter shut out (34-0). The Colts eventually went on to lose Super Bowl III in the legendary upset against "Broadway" Joe Namath and the New York Jets. After the 1969 season, Shula signed onto the Miami Dolphins and immediately made an impact. By 1971, the Miami Dolphins were competing in the Super Bowl regularly. The greatest achievement of Shula's career was completing the "Perfect Season" in 1972; the Dolphins had gone 14-0 in the regular season and ended up winning the Super Bowl that year, becoming 17-0 and doing what not even Bill Belichick could do. Shula's final crowning achievement was becoming the winningest head coach of all time by surpassing George Halas and ending with 347 career wins. To put this into perspective, Belichick requires four more 13 win seasons, and an extra post-season win to TIE Don Shula's career wins. There is no Head Coach more impressive and with as extensive a track record, as the great Don Shula.

II
Bill Belichick
(6/9 Super Bowls, 294 Career Wins)
https%3A%2F%2Fs.yimg.com%2Fos%2Fcreatr-images%2F2019-08%2Fecc6f5a0-c2b2-11e9-bf5f-c90ab8c45e1a

Next on our list is the man I just mentioned. Belichick has more Super Bowl victories than any other head coach in the history of the NFL, as well as more Super Bowl appearances than any other; what's even more impressive is that he's done this with the same quarterback (more or less) for 20 years, Tom Brady. Belichick took over Patriots' operations as both the Head Coach and General Manager in 2000 and has had a winning season in all but one season since, as well as a playoff berth in all but two in his coaching tenure. That is insane consistency in a league where coach turnover is high for even the slightest misstep. The man is a genius at reading defenses and he's still not done. Expect a few more Super Bowl appearances for this man as he continues to dominate the league. His 294 career wins is fourth behind the great Don Shula and George Halas. Unfortunately, Belichick's legacy comes with debatable taint. Accusations and scandals abound of cheating and less than legal measures to victory have many pundits declaim his accomplishments.

III
George Halas
(8x NFL Champion, 324 Career Wins)
0*WNYKk0DQ8heagskA.jpg

George Halas, known as "Papa Bear" is perhaps the most legendary of our illustrious list. Halas founded both the Chicago Bears as well as co-founded the NFL itself in 1920. As a Player-Coach, Halas was second to none and in his active career, he led the Bears to the second ever APFA (now known as the NFL) Championship. After retiring, he coached the Bears to seven more championships, appearing in a record 17 Championship games (both as a player-coach and regular coach), the most of any head coach in Pro Football history. His 324 career wins in an era of 11-game and 12-game seasons is perhaps the most impressive of his achievements. Halas was among the very first inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963, and his legacy is still felt today when you look at the NFL itself.

IV:
Vince Lombardi

(2/2 Super Bowls, 5x NFL Champion, 105 Career Wins)
vincelombardi.jpg

Vince Lombardi was a perfectionist. He was meticulous in everything he did and it affected his players as well. Lombardi became the Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1959 and immediately made an impact. Within three years, the Packers would win the NFL Championship and become a perennial contender for the title. Vince would go on to become the winning head coach in the first two Super Bowls, cementing his legacy. His name lives on in the NFL as the Super Bowl trophy is named the Vince Lombardi Trophy in his honor.

V:
Bud Grant
(0/4 Super Bowls, 1x NFL Champion, 4x Grey Cups, 290 Career Wins)
i

Harry "Bud" Grant is a man who strived for the very best out of his players. He currently stands as the very first head coach to lead his teams to both the Grey Cup and the Super Bowl, and is currently the only head coach to lead his teams to both Four Super Bowl and Grey Cup Appearances. While unable to take home a Lombardi Trophy during his tenure as the Minnesota Vikings' head coach, he was a perennial threat to all teams he played against. In the CFL, he took over for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1957 and took them to the Grey Cup that same year, losing to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He then led the Blue Bombers to four Championships in five years, and in his final year as the Blue Bomber coach, he lost in the Grey Cup to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. A fitting end to his CFL career as he came into the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings in 1967 and made an immediate impact as well. While unable to get a single victory in any of them, Bud Grant was the first head coach to lead his teams to four Super Bowls. His 290 Career Wins stands as the fifth most of any head coach in Pro Football history, behind Don Shula, George Halas, and Bill Belichick.

VI
Tom Landry
(2/5 Super Bowls, 20 Consecutive Winning Seasons, 270 Career Wins)
dallasites_tom_landry-677x451.jpg

Tom Landry was many things, but consistent would probably describe him best. Taking over as the very first head coach for the expansion Dallas Cowboys in 1960, Landry innovated better than anyone else. Landry single-handily invented the "4-3 Defense" as well as the "Flex Defense", "Motion Offense", and the "Shotgun Formation". It was with these devices that Landry led his team to the championships consistently and even won the Super Bowl twice in five tries. His most impressive accomplishment would be 20 consecutive winning seasons, from 1965-1985, the most of any head coach ever. To put it into perspective, Bill Belichick has 16 consecutive winning seasons, at the time of this writing. Landry's 270 career wins also place him sixth all-time.

VII
Wally Buono
(5x Grey Cups, 305 Career Wins)
wally-buono-2017-3-1600x902.jpg

Wally Buono has only ever had one thing on his mind: victory. Buono is arguably the greatest CFL Coach of all time, having led both the Calgary Stampeders and the BC Lions to a record five Grey Cup championships out of nine appearances. His teams were a perennial winner and arguably his most impressive achievement is 305 career wins, the most of any CFL Head Coach in history, and more than head coaching greats Tom Landry and Bud Grant, as well as Bill Belichick. For a man who stayed in the CFL for his entire career, that is damn impressive.

VIII
Paul Brown
(4x AAFC Champion, 3x NFL Champion)
LS-brown-101416-AP.jpg

There is one man who truly symbolizes excellence in football better than any other name. That man is Paul Brown. When Paul Brown founded the Cleveland Browns (named after him, of course) in 1944 for the All-America Football Conference (the Browns would move to the NFL in 1950), Professional Football was stuck in the days of George Halas, basic sets and running dominated the league. Brown saw to completely change the game of football as he saw fit. Brown was among the very first head coaches to study his opponents on film. Brown was the first head coach to have his players memorize a standard playbook. Paul Brown was among the first head coaches to call plays himself. Paul Brown standardized the 40 Yard Dash. Paul Brown invented the "Draw" play. Paul Brown coined the quarterback "pocket". His greatest invention is something that football can no longer live without, however: The facemask. These innovations made Brown a man not to be trifled with. Brown's legacy doesn't end there, as he founded the Cincinnati Bengals in 1967. After having been sacked from his head coaching job by Art Modell in 1963, Brown opened another franchise in Cincinatti and it is here where his legacy stands. His coaching tree is arguably one of the greatest of all time as well, with names such as Don Shula, Marty Schottenheimer, and Bill Walsh falling under his sphere of influence.

IX
Curly Lambeau
(6x NFL Champion, 229 Career Wins)
kv9b3goqy0xo5gfovfa6.jpg

Curly Lambeau's legacy lives and dies with the Green Bay Packers. As a co-founder, star running back, and first head coach for the Packers, the team joined the NFL in 1921 and served as the spark for the most intense rivalry of the 1920's to the 1960's: The Green Bay/Chicago Rivalry. Of nine appearances to the NFL Championship game, Curly Lambeau's Green Bay Packers (named after the Indian Packing Company) won six times in the big game. He ruled as the head coach for the Packers for nearly 30 years, an impressive stay made even more impressive with his 229 career wins, 8th overall in the Pro Football world. In honor of his memory, the Packers' home stadium is named Lambeau field after Curly.

X
Chuck Noll
(4/4 Super Bowls, 209 Career Wins)
steelers-coach-chuck-noll-dead-at-82.jpg

Chuck Noll has arguably one of the greatest distinctions of any head coach on our list. He is the only head coach to be undefeated in the Super Bowl after leading his team to four of them. Noll took over for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969, and helped create one of the most formidable teams of the 1970's. The Steel Curtain, Terry Bradshaw, and Franco Harris were a force to be reckoned with, and Noll coached them to perfection. With Super Bowl victories in 1975, 1976, 1978, and 1979, he was the only coach to win four. Unlike Bill Belichick, Noll's feather in his cap is being undefeated at the big game, unlike Bud Grant, Noll can say he won a Super Bowl; and unlike Lombardi, Noll can say he won two more. A distinction no other coach can truly claim as their own. A man who knew how to make victory his, Noll is truly one of the greatest of all time.

And there we have it, the top 10 coaches in pro football history. Do you agree or disagree with the list? Do you have a list of your own? Debate ahoy and let your voice be heard!

Props on the Wally Buono inclusion.
Buono actually caught me off guard with just the sheer number of wins. CFL and the NFL are such different leagues. Almost placed Bill Walsh over Buono but his 5 championships and 3rd most wins was a no brainer.
