A mother apparently used Craigslist to leave behind her one-year old son while she skipped town.
The incident started with an ad on Craigslist. A woman calling herself Jen advertised for someone to watch her 1-year old son overnights while she worked as a dancer at Rick's Cabaret on Lafayette Road. A woman named Cecilia answered the ad, and began watching the boy at her home in the Valley Brook trailer park on the southwest side of Indianapolis.
But after a couple weeks, it became clear that something wasn't right. "The baby was actually staying there more often than anything,†said the babysitter’s neighbor, Jacob Thompson. “That she was coming maybe two days out of the week to pick him back up."
Then this week Jen never came back to pick up her son. Cecilia called Jen to find out where she was and Jen said she was out of town and the baby was Cecilia’s problem now. "They had her child and were basically raising her child on a fulltime basis,†said Thompson.
Cecilia called police, who then tried to contact Jen on her cellphone. The police report says Jen told the officer "quit calling my ****ing phone!" She then disconnected the phone.
"During that conversation, the officer could hear some loud music going on, what sounded like possible partying going on. But it was unclear of where she was located,†said Officer Anthony Schneider of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Adding to the problem is ‘Jen’ may or may not be the mother's real name. Police went to Rick's Cabaret to check on the story and were told there was no Jen who worked there and they didn't know anything about the person.
The Department of Child Services took the one-year old into protective custody as the search for the boy's mom got underway.
"So at this point, the case is in the Department of Child Services Hands and they are investigating," said Schneider.
