I mean, back in 2004/2005, when he commented for Raw as the third wheel as a heel commentator, he was good. No Tazz or JBL, not even close, but his appreciations were good, he was at least competent, enjoyable.

He is a sports commentator, and I have read that he does very good in that spot, and more doors are opening for him as a sports commentator.

Then, what the hell went wrong with his run in SD? Nowhere close to the time in which he was on Raw, and not something that yells impressive or someone with a future commentating. Hell, when you get humilliated by Michael Cole, you know something is wrong.

So, what do you think went wrong with the Coach in his run in SD? What was different this time than when he was on Raw?

Well I think with JR and King helped hima lot on Raw. And once JR left he still had King and Joey Styles... And then to switch over to SD, you need some time to adjust... And again, on Raw there were 3 guys, which makes it much easier. But then jumping to SD, 2 people, and having Michae Cole, who is good, but not JR and King, is all an adjustment, and he just needed time. And I think before he had time, WWE was presuring him to get better and then cut him off and put in Mick.
But overall I didnt think he was that bad on SD, but hes definately better for a management role on the show although I hear hes good at calling actual sports for MSG.

well this is hard to say. probably because raw is live so he tried harder and simply put raw have better writers. with smackdown he was kinda shoved in the corner and at WM he said 5 things and commentated one match. the writers made it bad, they shut him up big style.

maybe he is not really that interested to commentate. I think he was more than happy as the acting GM of Raw i guess.

He was good as the assistant General Manager, he was never good as a color commentator and wasn't interesting at all.

On RAW, as Mike mentioned there were 3 guys and so it's easier to call a match since you don't have to do everything and the other two guys were Joey Styles and Jerry Lawler who are experienced. But on Smackdown Coach was alone with Michael cole who can't get along with many people. Both of them didn't work too well and so Coach isn't the announcer anymore. He also didn't fit in as the color commentator, he would have been better as a play-by-play announcer since he calls for actual sports. But that would replace Michael Cole so yeah... there was nothing else that could be done.

he wasn't that good back then either, the only reason the blundering moron was decent was because JR and The King were right next to him. Then he is put with Cole, who has sucked ever since tazz left, so it was obvious that he was going to be awful.

Coach does a lot of behind the scenes work... so him appearing on TV really isn't necassary. He always has a few projects outside of the WWE...sports shows and what not.

I personally think that Michael Cole and JBL went perfectly, but due to JBL's wrestling return Michael was left with Coach :( And Coach can't ever be a successful color commentator. However, he can be a good play-by-play announcer and so Smackdown had two play-by-play announcers with Coach adding in Michael and so there was literally no "life" in the matches due to the poor commentary.

Coach isn't a bad colour commentator. Judging by the reactions of the replies on this thread he has wound some people up which means he is doing his job. He is a good on air personality. He has all the narcissistic qualities that gets under peoples skin.

I think WWE has an abundance of good commentators which means someone like Coach is being left out. Todd Grisham and Josh Matthews are ready. Mike Adamale is the only one I'm unsure about but I haven't seen enough of ECW to give an opinion of any substance.

I suspect Coach is being lined up for the Raw General manager role.

Coach is more annoying than actually being a bad commentator. He was good at it but his annoying self overshadowed his commentating skills.

Maybe the SD One as well.
Because Raw has Regal, who after this little feud, will go back to full time GM, and I dont think they have a problem with him... And Coach has been Raw GM.
its possible, but I think maybe eventually he'll take over for Vicke Guerrero on SD.

I think Regals going to step up to the big time though in terms of wrestling. Hes the most under-utilised wrestler in the WWE. Hes got the talent and Charisma to be a top card heel, I'd certainly put him at least on a par with JBL. I'd be very dissapointed if Regal doesn't hold the WWE Championship before he retires.

I don't like Vicki Guerrero as a General Manager and her (kayfabe) relationship with Edge gets on my nerves. Thats why she should remain as a General Manager though. If you got rid of all the annoying people in the WWE then it would be boring.

He's not bad at commentating, it just takes time for that kind of job to develop your craft. Even JR says it takes years to be at your best.

Look he's not a great commentator, and I think that WWE have realised (finally) that what he is best at is backstage. At least that is what I hope.

He was never going to really work well with Cole, because Cole insulting someone just sounds stupid. So I'm glad they have Foley there, because Cole won't be bagging him lol.

For the 100th time Coach is not a color commentator. He's a play by play announcer. If you put him in as a color commentator he's obviously not going to succeed because that's not what he's good at. If they had put him in Cole's role he would have been great. He was just in the wrong position. It's like putting a Quarterback in at Center, it's just not going to work. When he was third commentator on Raw he wasn't bad because the other guys could carry him, but that didn't work with a 2 man crew.
