The year is 1971.
A new craze has just began sweeping the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), leading to the creation of a new Championship. The new craze is Tag Team Wrestling, and although it had already been around for decades, never had it been noticed as much until now. The new Championship is the WWWF World Tag Team Championship, something only Tag Teams could contend for. The first champions were the team of Luke Graham & Tarzan Tyler.

Since then, such legendary Tag Teams as the "Road Warriors", the "Blackjacks", the "British Bulldogs" and the "Hardy Boyz" have all enjoyed World Tag Team Title reigns. But what has become of Tag Teams in the present-day WWE? Why do we have five Tag Teams on one brand, but only three on the other? What should the WWE do to help bring Tag Teams back into the Spotlight?

Today, the WWE is on top of the wrestling world, perhaps even the sports-entertainment industry, with mega stars such as John Cena, Triple H & Batista on top of the company. With three brands filled with great talents, and monthly pay-per-views featuring memorable matches, just how much thought is given into Tag Teams?

When the WWE was known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), in the 80's - 90's, Tag Teams were everywhere. No matter what kind of wrestling style you liked, Tag Team Wrestling could give you that particular thrill. There were brawlers (Demolition), high-flyers (The Rockers) and technicians (Hart Foundation). But while these the fans of the 80's enjoyed this kind of wrestling in the late 80's and early 90's, the popularity of Tag Teams afterward in the WWF began to wane. That was until the WWF Champion, Diesel (Kevin Nash), and Shawn Michaels, would win the WWF World Tag Team Titles from the Headshrinkers. Tag Team wrestling was back and began to regain its popularity. But then, a Tag Team from the much smaller, and hardcore, promotion of ECW joined the WWF, and would change the world of Tag Teams forever...

They were the Dudley Boyz, D-Von & Bubba Ray, and they would feud with the likes of the high-flyers of the Hardy Boyz, and the WrestleMania undefeated Edge & Christian. These teams would swap the titles in matches involving Tables, matches involving Ladders, and matches involving Chairs. But once again, another team would win the WWF Tag Team Titles, and there was a change in Tag Team perspectives. "The Brothers of Destruction", Kane & The Undertaker, would win the Titles, and once again Tag Teams lost their popularity.

Over the course of a year and a half, we would see a change, something never before undertaken in a promotion, involving the WWE. There was a Roster Split, and we now had two new brands of wrestling, "RAW" and "SmackDown!". With now four titles on each brand, that meant two Tag Team Titles, but less value for each of those Titles.

And now, here we are, in the year 2007. We still have the two brands, but we also have a new brand, known as "ECW", a General Manager for each brand. "What about the Tag Teams?" you ask. "Isn't that what you're supposed to be talking about that?". Well I'll get to that in a minute. We have a Rapper/Marine, an A-Lister/Rockstar and a Monster for our three brand Champions, but only two Teams of Tag Team Champions.

There is the Redneck team of Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch, and the Greaser team of Deuce 'N Domino as the brands' respective Tag Team Champions. But what are they doing? While the RAW Tag Team Champions don't actually appear on the flagship program, and are barely recognized, they are still great wrestlers nonetheless, but the SD! Tag Team Champions still manage to wrestle on their brand's flagship program, although not always in Tag Team matches. While there are only eight teams in the WWE Roster at the moment, five of them are on RAW, including the technical team of the World's Greatest Tag Team and the high-flying Paul London & Brian Kendrick (Coincidentally, they all started on SD!, and won the Tag Team Titles there), but yet there are only three Tag Teams on SD! (And one of the Tag Teams have yet to make their In-Ring Debut), including the brawling team of Deuce 'N Domino and the multi-talented Major Brothers.

So what can be do to help restore the popularity of Tag Teams in the WWE, or in the entire wrestling community. What would you do to help?

I thought of it last nite whilst watching SNME. Two tag matches were on it but none of the four teams where an actual tag team. Where are murdoch and cade on heat still? Deuce and domino defend the titles hardly. I say get rid of one of the tag titles. Unite them or something just put more meaning to them.

i also notice that fans tend to lose interest in tag matches ,the crowd's a bit quiet during the tag matches.Nancy the only way IMO for wwe to revigorate its tag division is to join two ME superstars as a tag team for a period of 2-3 like they did a few years back with The rock and sock connection and that stinky mr socko. That was a truely awesome tagteam if you smell what mr socko ..........well if you smell mr socko you'll just die period:)

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I remember an 8-Man Tag Match on Heat a month ago, and even though it could have been PPV material, the fans weren't really into it. You're right about the Main Eventers, but who has the Mic Skill to pull it off? Khali?!

cena could be in a tag team with jericho[if he returns] for example. That would be pretty awesome and a sure boost for the tag division.Fans[including me] are fed up with cena as wwe champion but i'll think cena will get a major pop from the crowd if he drops the belt and joins a tag team for 2-3 months.Nancy do you remember the cena/hbk tag team they were getting a standing ovation from the crowd.

Yeah but if you put Cena in a tag team whose gonna be the top face in the ME scene? I was thinking Batista and Flair on SD! while Kane and Khali coul feud for the titles to boost SD!'s tag division and it could add to the fact Batista has had a sort of mini feud with D n' D. Raw doesn't need any more tag eams they have enough talent in their tag division as it is and ECW don't really have a tag division at all with the new breed/originals feud done either.

I wouldn't say unify the tag titles because all tag divisions have ups and downs, take TNA for example. A month or so ago their tag division was in trouble but now it's got MCMG, 3D, Steiners, LAX etc and it's gonna be the same with WWE. In a year or so they will prolly have tons of great tag teams come up from OVW and FCW.

yeah but the problem is that when a tag team becomes really popular, wwe breaks the tag team and gives the tag wrestler who's getting the most pop a run as a singles competitor,so you're always back to aquare one.recent ex.hardys.It seems now that wwe uses the tag division to give a push to a wrestler who they think is ME material ex.flair/batista tag.So the tag division is mainly a breeding ground for future ME guys. They did that with bret hart from hart foundation tag team but back then they would allow the tag team to compete for 1-3 years before breaking it up.now they'll break the tag team after a few months .

The problem is that the WWE are giving these tag teams stupid gimmicks and then letting them go when they become unpopular and they wonder why..... the tag team division should feature action-packed, high-flying tag team action much like London and Kendrick.

There are a dozen threads about this exact same topic. Please use one of them instead of creating a new one.
