The year is 1971.
A new craze has just began sweeping the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), leading to the creation of a new Championship. The new craze is Tag Team Wrestling, and although it had already been around for decades, never had it been noticed as much until now. The new Championship is the WWWF World Tag Team Championship, something only Tag Teams could contend for. The first champions were the team of Luke Graham & Tarzan Tyler.
Since then, such legendary Tag Teams as the "Road Warriors", the "Blackjacks", the "British Bulldogs" and the "Hardy Boyz" have all enjoyed World Tag Team Title reigns. But what has become of Tag Teams in the present-day WWE? Why do we have five Tag Teams on one brand, but only three on the other? What should the WWE do to help bring Tag Teams back into the Spotlight?
Today, the WWE is on top of the wrestling world, perhaps even the sports-entertainment industry, with mega stars such as John Cena, Triple H & Batista on top of the company. With three brands filled with great talents, and monthly pay-per-views featuring memorable matches, just how much thought is given into Tag Teams?
When the WWE was known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), in the 80's - 90's, Tag Teams were everywhere. No matter what kind of wrestling style you liked, Tag Team Wrestling could give you that particular thrill. There were brawlers (Demolition), high-flyers (The Rockers) and technicians (Hart Foundation). But while these the fans of the 80's enjoyed this kind of wrestling in the late 80's and early 90's, the popularity of Tag Teams afterward in the WWF began to wane. That was until the WWF Champion, Diesel (Kevin Nash), and Shawn Michaels, would win the WWF World Tag Team Titles from the Headshrinkers. Tag Team wrestling was back and began to regain its popularity. But then, a Tag Team from the much smaller, and hardcore, promotion of ECW joined the WWF, and would change the world of Tag Teams forever...
They were the Dudley Boyz, D-Von & Bubba Ray, and they would feud with the likes of the high-flyers of the Hardy Boyz, and the WrestleMania undefeated Edge & Christian. These teams would swap the titles in matches involving Tables, matches involving Ladders, and matches involving Chairs. But once again, another team would win the WWF Tag Team Titles, and there was a change in Tag Team perspectives. "The Brothers of Destruction", Kane & The Undertaker, would win the Titles, and once again Tag Teams lost their popularity.
Over the course of a year and a half, we would see a change, something never before undertaken in a promotion, involving the WWE. There was a Roster Split, and we now had two new brands of wrestling, "RAW" and "SmackDown!". With now four titles on each brand, that meant two Tag Team Titles, but less value for each of those Titles.
And now, here we are, in the year 2007. We still have the two brands, but we also have a new brand, known as "ECW", a General Manager for each brand. "What about the Tag Teams?" you ask. "Isn't that what you're supposed to be talking about that?". Well I'll get to that in a minute. We have a Rapper/Marine, an A-Lister/Rockstar and a Monster for our three brand Champions, but only two Teams of Tag Team Champions.
There is the Redneck team of Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch, and the Greaser team of Deuce 'N Domino as the brands' respective Tag Team Champions. But what are they doing? While the RAW Tag Team Champions don't actually appear on the flagship program, and are barely recognized, they are still great wrestlers nonetheless, but the SD! Tag Team Champions still manage to wrestle on their brand's flagship program, although not always in Tag Team matches. While there are only eight teams in the WWE Roster at the moment, five of them are on RAW, including the technical team of the World's Greatest Tag Team and the high-flying Paul London & Brian Kendrick (Coincidentally, they all started on SD!, and won the Tag Team Titles there), but yet there are only three Tag Teams on SD! (And one of the Tag Teams have yet to make their In-Ring Debut), including the brawling team of Deuce 'N Domino and the multi-talented Major Brothers.
So what can be do to help restore the popularity of Tag Teams in the WWE, or in the entire wrestling community. What would you do to help?
