ALIENS: Colonial Marines

Basically, the reviews that are pouring in are not good. The game that was one of the most-anticipated releases of 2013 is shaping up to be nothing short of a run-of-the-mill FPS with very little redeeming qualities in terms of story.

Some of the biggest gripes of the game according to various websites revolve around the utterly Blue AI xenomorphs that practically just mindlessly hurl themselves at you with no strategic approach. Apparently your character also doesn't have any weigh limit on the amount of items you can carry, so basically you can walk around with 20 different assault rifles and a 100 grenades shoved up your ass if you like.

The big hype of this game also centered around it being a sequel to the movie "Aliens" set several months after the events in that movie. Apparently this game really doesn't add anything to the franchise story-wise and the nostalgic factor is minimal at best.

I had a feeling this would be the case as video games based on movies are typically terrible and this one seems to be no exception.

IGN probably isn't the best source for game reviews, particularly since they're notorious for rating sub-par games "9" (hence the nickname "9GN"), but when they rate a game this low, its probably that bad or worse. Very disappointing considering this game has been in development for nearly 5 years and I'm a big-time Aliens fan.

Links to the reviews listed below and they're pretty brutal.

They need to hand the franchise back to Monolith.

I remember AvP 2 was it? Was pretty excellent and it was made by Monolith. They make pretty good games. F.E.A.R, Condemned, etc. Particularly good at the horror/thriller genre.

Not shocked about the reviews, the previous Alien vs Predator got a lackluster reception. I was expecting this to be somewhat superior considering it's developed by the makers of Borderlands...but I guess I was wrong.

Save your money for Crysis 3 instead if you're that disappointed.

Storyline wise, there wouldn't be an LV-426 following the events of Aliens. Everything would have been dead, and it would have looked like Hiroshima in Space. Bishop initiated the self-destruct sequence via the remote terminal and blew the place sky-high. I'm not sure how there's another company of Colonial Marines going in after the events of Aliens... :shrugs:

*inner nerd coming out*

Typically I don't play FPS's, but I was probably going to make an exception for this game just because I love Aliens. I'm more of a 3rd person kind of player, I could never get comfortable with turning my head so much and having less in my view in FPS's.

The only game I'm holding out for now is GTAV tbh. All my favorite game franchises besides that one released games in 2012, so I was expecting this to be a slow year. I'm sure Assassins Creed will release another game though since they're in the habit of shelling them out every year now, but AC3 was a bit of a let down and I'm not very enthusiastic about their next game.

2013 needs a hero though. Bayonetta 2 is a sleeper and I'm sure God of War: Ascensions won't disappoint.

I was thinking about giving this Dead Space series a go acually. Heard a lot of great things about it.

I only played the first one (Dead Space) on Windows and it was quite amazing. Got busy with clearing up some exams in the middle and kind of lost touch with gaming in general, and before I know it's 2012 and Dishonored is out.

Holy shit @ Beyond Two Souls, the character based on Ellen Page looks so lifelike. Would splurge out on a PS3 this instant if I wasn't in the middle of a drought.

That's not a weak line up at all.

I'm guessing 2013's hero will be MGS: Rising. Just guessing.
