Stewart strikes Kurt Busch as NASCAR officials look on
Details about altercation unclear, because 'what transpires in the NASCAR hauler, remains in the hauler'
By JIM UTTER - The Charlotte Observer

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A meeting in the NASCAR hauler Friday night after an on-track incident between driver Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch ended abruptly when Stewart allegedly struck Busch in the presence of NASCAR officials and left the hauler, four sources with knowledge of the incident told The Charlotte Observer and ThatsRacin.com.

The physical altercation was the reason NASCAR vice president Jim Hunter told a gathering of media outside the hauler Saturday evening that another conversation with the two drivers would be held Saturday morning, the sources said.

Stewart was seen exiting the rear side entrance of the NASCAR hauler not long after both drivers had arrived. Busch remained in the hauler and eventually left, once a golf cart was summoned for him, sources said.

When asked Saturday whether NASCAR officials Robin Pemberton, John Darby and Hunter witnessed Stewart strike Busch in their presence in the NASCAR hauler Friday evening, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston replied, "What transpires in the NASCAR hauler, remains in the hauler."

Asked if that included acts of violence, Poston replied, "It includes anything."

A check of local police records showed no charges had been filed against Stewart.

On the track Friday night, Stewart hit Busch from behind during a practice session for the Budweiser Shootout causing Busch's car to slam into the wall. Stewart's car rolled down the track and slid into his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin.

As Stewart turned onto pit road, Busch ran him down and twice slammed his car into the side of Stewart's No. 20 Toyota. When Stewart attempted to turn into the entrance of the garage area, Busch then cut him off.

After Stewart's teammates arrived, Bush then drove his car into the garage.

Both drivers were then called to the NASCAR hauler, where the physical confrontation took place.

In an interview Saturday morning with Speed TV, Busch said his focus now was on preparing his Daytona 500 car.

"Tony and I are competitors, we always have been and we're going to be just fine," Busch said. "We're going to move forward. We know we need to help each other out in the future so that doesn?t happen again."

Stewart was interviewed by Speed TV early Saturday morning prior to the start of qualifying practice and appeared contrite.

"Coming down on pit lane - I'm not blaming him. I've done worse," Stewart said of the on-track incident.

"The emotion of getting ready for the Shootout. He's a good driver and the passion is what makes us as good as we all are. What happened last night is over."

His team later released a statement, basically repeating the same thing, but added, "We've met in the NASCAR hauler twice now, and we're both past it and we're hoping that the media will respect that fact too and let us move on."

wow that is messed up...dont know what to say...Wonder what Kurt did to get Tony mad.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

The "new" was Dale Earnhardt Jr., who on Saturday night won the 30th Budweiser Shootout in his first race in a Hendrick Motorsports car -- with new sponsors AMP Energy Drink and National Guard and new car No. 88.

New, too, was the first race at Daytona International Speedway with the winged racecar NASCAR introduced into competition at selected tracks last year.

The "old" was Hendrick's continued dominance of NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series, a carryover from 2007, when the sport's most efficient team won 18 of the 36 points races. Earnhardt's teammates, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, finished third and fourth, respectively, behind runner-up Tony Stewart, as Hendrick cars claimed four of the first six positions.

The "borrowed" was Jeff Gordon's car -- and Johnson's, too, for that matter -- short-track backups called into service after their primary Shootout cars were wrecked in a practice crash Friday night.

The "blue" was Johnson's No. 48 cobalt-colored Chevrolet, which gave Earnhardt the push to take the lead on a three-lap run to the finish after the fourth caution of the 70-lap non-points event. With a car not stout enough to go for the victory, Johnson stayed behind Earnhardt and propelled him to the win.

In short, the honeymoon has already started for a Hendrick-Earnhardt marriage made in heaven.

"This is exactly what we needed coming out of the gate," said an elated Earnhardt, who left his family-founded Dale Earnhardt Inc. team to drive for Hendrick. "We've had such a long offseason, and this really made it worth it.

"We had a lot of help at the end from Jimmie. That was half the win. The other half was the car, being able to stay up front there at the end."

Earnhardt, who also won the Shootout in 2003, led 47 of the 70 laps Saturday night and earned the unqualified admiration of Stewart, who was second in laps led with nine.

"Dale Earnhardt Jr. is one of the best drivers that's ever been in a restrictor-plate car," Stewart said. "He knows where to be on the racetrack, and he knows when to switch lines.

"I'm happy for him. He drove his butt off and put himself in the right places at the right times."

Reed Sorenson was fifth, followed by Casey Mears, Dave Blaney, Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne.

Mears' No. 5 Chevrolet, however, failed the height stick test during post-race inspection. The car was deemed too low in the rear, but NASCAR vice president of communications Jim Hunter said the car might have been damaged and that NASCAR was still evaluating to determine the appropriate action.

After a break at 20 laps, the field restarted on Lap 21 with Earnhardt in the lead and Blaney second. On Lap 24, however, Jamie McMurray brought out the second caution of the race when he moved up the track across the nose of Hamlin's No. 11 Toyota and turned into the wall at the exit of Turn 4.

It didn't take long after a restart on Lap 28 for the Hendrick contingent to move to the front of the pack. By Lap 47, the Hendrick cars of Earnhardt, Gordon, Johnson and Mears occupied four of the top five positions.

A lap later, David Gilliland's blown right-front tire triggered a wreck that also took out Greg Biffle and Martin Truex Jr. After a restart on Lap 53, Earnhardt and Stewart battled for the lead until Kurt Busch's spin, along with a wreck behind him involving Ryan Newman and J.J. Yeley, brought out the fourth caution and set up the three-lap dash to the finish.

Kyle Busch won the 'Dega race today as the race was ended under caution when there was a 10 car wreck on the back streck on the final lap. Plis Juan Pablo Mantoya finished 2nd. Vickers nd Regan also get top 10 finished. I f I am not mistaken there were over 20 lead changes and that was at the start finish line. There were a whole lot more that happened at othe parts of the track. Great race with the new car and can't wait fo the fall race. Plus after racing the Dakar Rally last week Robby Goron (who didn't see the car car at all till this morning) finished 11th.

Hamlin pole @ RIR then Martin, Truex, Carpentier, Sorenson, Montoya, KyBusch, Sadler, Khane & Newman; Burton 33rd, Dale Jr 22nd, Stewart 15th, Petty 42nd

Edwards re-signs w/Roush multi-year; Truex/DEI not agreed on option for 2009 yet; Biffle say he plans to re-sign w/Roush soon

Nice Hamlin on the pole and I hope that Truex re-signs with DEI
