The reasoning behind this post is because, I remember this discussion I had in my Anthropology class a little while ago an it got me really thinking about how we automatically assume everything. There was this one assignment we had to complete, it was one of those assignments where you were on a sinking boat and you could only rescue a certain amount of people, like a Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, etc... The teacher was walking around the classroom looking at everybody's answers and noticed that people assumed that the Doctor was Male and the Teacher was Female all that other stuff. So, I've been wondering this for quite a little while.

I can see why people probably assumed that the Doctor was male because, way back in the day doctors majority were male. Where women have generally been talked about and seen as housewives and care taker of children. Now, I am in no way trying to offend people on here because, I don't intend to insult or offend people, its just my opinion and this leads me to my question.

"Why do we assume that Males are always in the dominate position in society and not females?"

Good thread. I myself make many assumptions before I meet people about what they look like how they will act etc. when I should wait until I meet them to make up my mind on them.

I think that the reason why people make those gender assumptions is that for a very long time females weren't part of the workforce or if they were they weren't given the opportunities to attain those high-up jobs. It has only been in recent decades where the opportunities have been equal for both men and women with regards to job opportunities. One key factor is that it takes time for people to move up the job ranks, especially the executive positions, it takes a few decades to move up to the top of the ladder. Another factor is that the older generation are more traditional, they have the thought process that men go out and earn the money and women stay at home with the kids. The younger generation don't have this way of thinking though and are much more about equality. In ten years it will all be much more even when it comes to the dominate positions in society.
