UFC on FOX 9 medical suspensions: Faber, McGee, Danzig face lengthy terms

All 22 competitors from this past Saturday’s UFC on FOX 9 card received medical suspensions. Of those, three were given potentially lengthy terms, including co-main event bantamweight Urijah Faber.

MMAjunkie recently requested and today received the list of suspensions from the California State Athletic Commission, which regulated the event.

UFC on FOX 9 took place at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. The main card aired live on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and MMAjunkie.

In the main event, flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson stopped challenger Joseph Benavidez with a first-round knockout to retain the belt. The fight was a rematch between the two from their first meeting at UFC 152, at which Johnson won the UFC’s inaugural 125-pound title by split decision.

Benavidez was suspended for a minimum of 45 days following the knockout, and he could be out as long as 60 days unless he is cleared early by a doctor. Johnson received the state minimum seven-day rest period.

Faber stopped Michael McDonald by submission, but that was brought on by a barrage of punches leading up to it. And the result of that is a potential six-month suspension for the bantamweight contender. He can be cleared early if both hands and his left wrist are signed off on by a doctor.

Additionally, Mac Danzig, who dropped a decision to Joe Lauzon to open the main card, and Court McGee, who lost to Ryan LaFlare, could be out for six months. Danzig is out a minimum of 60 days, and then must have a possibly broken nose cleared, as well as a potential injury to his left arm, before he returns. McGee also is out a minimum of 60 days and will need an ophthalmologist to release him earlier than 180 days due to a potential orbital fracture and vision problems.
