UFC on FOX 11 heads to Florida with Werdum vs. Browne, Tate vs. Carmouche
The second UFC on FOX event of 2014 is slated for April 19, and the network-televised event has its first two fights.
Those UFC on FOX 11 bouts include heavyweights Travis Browne (15-1-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) vs. Fabricio Werdum (17-5-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in a surefire title eliminator, as well as former women’s bantamweight title challengers Miesha Tate (13-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) vs. Liz Carmouche (9-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC), the UFC today announced.
However, neither bout will serve as the headliner, which will be announced soon, according to today’s announcement.
UFC on FOX 11 is slated for April 19 at the 19,000-seat Amway Center in Orlando. The event’s main card airs on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Browne and Werdum were recently named top contenders, though as MMAjunkie first reported, this latest booking required Browne to sign a new deal.
Browne was recently voted MMAjunkie’s Breakthrough Fighter of the Year after going 3-0 in the calendar year and claiming three “Knockout of the Night†bonuses in the process. The most recent came over former champ and notable Josh Barnett at UFC 168 this past month. The 31-year-old Hawaiians only career loss came to Antonio Silva in 2012, though Browne tore his hamstring and was largely immobilized early in the fight.
Werdum, meanwhile, also is on a three-fight winning streak, and he’s won six out of his past seven, which included a successful run in Strikeforce. The 36-year-old Brazilian hasn’t fought since this past June, when tapped out former champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC on FUEL TV 10.
Tate, meanwhile, is fresh of a title loss to champ Ronda Rousey, her rival coach on “The Ultimate Fighter 18,†at UFC 168. The 27-year-old former Strikeforce champ will look to halt the first two-fight skid of her career when she meets 29-year-old Carmouche, who’s knocked out Jessica Andrade and suffered a decision loss to Alexis Davis since a failed bid at Rousey’s title in February 2013.
